Internet Sharing on SBS 2003
I have a Server running SBS 2003, 3 Clients running XP Pro and an unmanaged
Switch. I had a BT DSL modem whcih I have connected to the USB port on the
Server. From the Server I can see the web but I cannot configure the Server
to allow internet access from the Clients. I have followed in-built and web
"Help" screens but there is no Enable Internet Sharing screen or tab anywhere.
Is ICS possible with a USB DSL Modem or must I use a router connected to one
of the RJ45 ports? If the former, how??
THanks

SBS/Exchange 2000: Event 8331: MSExchangeAL: Address List
This SBS 2K installation has been running like a train for 2yrs, no probs.
Recently two 8331 problems (16th June and today) have caused Exchange
issues.
Users are unable to send mail, it remains in the Outlook outbox.
I've tried re-starting the Exchange services, but the Exchange Information
store will not re-start. It just hangs.
The first time a re-boot fixed it, but it hasn't lasted long !!!
Google gives plenty of info on this for Exchange 2003, but little for
Exchange 2000. There are some previous posts, but no definitive solutionThe
entry is:-
"MSExchangeAL"
"Address List"
"The service threw an unexpected exception which was caught at
g:\dsa\src\lra\abv_dg\lservagent.cpp(4664)"
The Application log is full of them, as the entry repeats every 60secs from
the initial one.
This is worrying, as a re-boot is not always convenient. Also there is no
logical g: drive on this machine!!!
Are there any regular maintenance tasks I should be performing on Exchange,
apart from patching, which I do every two months or so?
Any other pointers to the problem / solution?
Re-install exchange?
Thanks for any assistance.

Spliting applications from a SBS 2000 server
One of my customers is using SBS 2000 with circa 40 clients. They are using
Exchange and SQL production application pretty heavily, so performance is a
bit iffy.
They need to move either the Exchnage or the SQL app to another box. This
will be a basic Proliant with Server 2003 installed.
Question is, what is the easier one to move? Exhange or SQL. I know that
they'll have to purchase one or the other, so it's about the most cost
effective and the easier re-config.
The client would prefer to move Exchange because they've had a lot of
bespoke work done on the SQL app and are terrified that they'll have to go
back to the standard application and try and run all their mods again.
Any comments would be appreciated.

Exchange 2003 Standard on SBS 2000
Hello, I am wondering if I can install Exchange Server 2003 standard on a
server running SBS 2000. It seems to upgrade the actual Exchange 2000
(component of SBS) to Exchange 2003 is the best way to get an Exchange 2003
organization, to keep the public folders, and to do a simple move of
mailboxes rather than have to run Exmerge.
The ultimate goal would be to move it all to a new Exchange 2003 server
running on Windows 2003 server.
Any ideas? Thanks! Tag: www.webmoney24center.de.vu Tag: 173904

SMTP Read Errors
I have a client with SBS 2000 using Exchange to host Internet email.
Internally, everything works fine. Sending mail to the Internet works fine.
For some domains, emailing to accounts on this server does not work, or works
sporadically. Often, the emailing domain receives this message: #4.4.7 SMTP;
451 4.4.1 reply: read error.
This only seems to be happening for a few domains, but it also seems to be
increasingly affecting incoming email. Any suggestions? Tag: www.webmoney24center.de.vu Tag: 173897

Silly question about logon/logoff hours
Hi Guys:
Have a simple question here. A user keeps leaving his computer on every
night with some applications, files, email open. If i go to the user profile

before forcing the logoff close every open files and applications that he
might have open? Just want to make sure no applications will be affected and
all the files are closed properly.

Forward mail from internal Domain
I have a customer who has set up a number of external POP3 mailboxes with his
ISP in order to use PDA's remotely. He then setup out of office rules to
forward mail to these mailboxes, but the mail never goes. I soon realised
that he had set up mailboxes using the same domain name as his Exchange
Server is responsible for (Exchange 2000 running on SBS2000), and therefore
when sending internally of course Exchange issues NDR's for the 'unknown'
mailboxes. Is there any way to forward this mail using OOF or will it have to
be set up under a different domain name? Tag: www.webmoney24center.de.vu Tag: 173881

Documenting SBS Server Settings?
Hello,
I was wondering what (if any) written documentation should be kept in terms
of "Server Configuration Settings"?
What sort of things do you all "write down" when it comes to documenting
your systems?
At the moment, my directors have a record of Administrator Passwords and
some information covering the Backup / Restore procedure.
This information would be useful for a "third party" in case work had to be
carried out on the system and I was un-available for some reason.

TS CAL on thin client device
We have a number of systems out running thin client devices such as the Wyse
Winterm product or similar. Although I was able to find an MS technical
article about how to transfer the TS device CAL from one thin client PC to
another (in the event of hardware failure) as this entails editing the
registry on the client PC to remove the license, it obviously won't work on
a thin client, as it only has Windows CE and no 'regedit' command.
So in the event of a Winterm failing and being replaced by the hardware
maintenance company, how would we get over the fact that Windows TS
Licensing would now consider this to be an extra user? So if the customer
had 10 TS device CALs, and ten thin clients, how do we swap one thin client
and not need to ugprade with extra TS CALs?

Problem with roaming profiles..
I am configuring 5 of our XP users to use roaming profiles - as they will be
sharing desks/computers on different days of the week. They will be
switching between 5 differnt Xp Pro machines. So far, I have only configured
the first user and ran into the following issue...
It seemed to go fairly smooth except that none of the users' mapped drives
came across. I had to manually re-map the drives on one of the other
machines he logged into - and I suspect I'll wind up having to do the same
on the other machines he will be logging into.
Is there some issue with mapped drives and roaming profiles? It seems that
once I mapped the drives, they are being retained - but likely only because
that is beiong stored in teh local profile for that user on that particluar
machine? It would be nice if I did not have to go to 5 different machines
for 5 different users (25 profiles)and map drives!!!
Any thoughts?

Email with DSL config.
Group
I am running in to the following issue.
I have SBS2003 (Is there another group for 2003 I should be posting
to?). I have a DSL router (Actiontec) that gets a static public IP from
my ISP 71.35.xx.xx, then the router provides an IP for my SBS server at
192.168.0.2 - first NIC, then the SBS2003 server provides ip's to my
internal network of 192.168.16.xx over the second nic
I have configured inside the Actiontec router to have my server IP
192.168.0.2 in the DMZ zone. I also pointed the MX record at my ISP's
to the router ip of 71.35.xx.xx
I can now send email to the outside world, but can not receive any.
What am I missing in this configuration?

ISA2k, Pop connection timing out. Help
Inherited a small 10pc network. SBS2K. 2NIC setup. Fully patched. Pop3 mail
is very
slow, times-out to the
ISP's server. Internet/WEB speed is fine. The ISP assures me that I am the
only
one having this issue. To look at the network. Something to note, the
profile has two things going on. Using ISA2000.
I've inherited a Dell Powerconnect switch, one of the managed ones. I did
some digging around. I noticed that:
1) 10 pcs (xp pro sp2) have their NICS at 100 Full Duplex
2) The Dell's powerconnecct switch's port settings were at AUTO.
Thinking this was inconsistent, I set the Dell ports speed to 100 FULL and
all the
PCS connections to the server slowed down and files could not be saved to
the server. Hmmmm....
I set the Dell's ports back to AUTO and the speed was back to the way it
was.
I tested the PC's NICS and also changed them to AUTO but this changed
nothing.
The speed tests: Copying 1 gig of data (2000 files) from the workstation to
the
server and vice versa. Opening Outlook. Opening up a SQL sever database.
Saving a large photoshop file to a network drive.
Some questions:
1. Is there a setting in ISA2K that be changed to improve bandwidth for
pop3? Way to play around with bandwidth tuning?
2. Looking at the Dell switch, noticed a setting "spanning tree" is
disabled. (only one switch)
3. Also, at the Dell switch, there is a "multimedia support" and the "high
priority optimization" is disabled. IGMP is disabled. Should this be on?
Thanks

Interesting article from Techworld. Firewalls. Your thoughts.
Question, what services can be turned off safely on SBS2000 Boxes? Minimum
services?
RE:
Singer is adamant that intrusion will not be stopped by a firewall and

Firewalls a dangerous distraction says expert
False sense of security.
By Rodney Gedda, Computerworld Australia
A preoccupation with firewalls is diverting attention and resources away
from the more important issue of locking systems down, according to an
expert.
Computer security researcher at the San Diego Supercomputing Center (SDSC),
Abe Singer said companies can spend 90 percent of their security efforts on
firewalls and not much of anything else. "I'm not saying firewalls are
completely irrelevant, but how much effort do you spend on security?" Singer
asked. "Do security at the host, not just the perimeter. You should be
worried about what users are doing, because if an attacker is going through
the perimeter [without secure hosts] then it's game over."
Speaking at the Australian Unix and open systems user group (AUUG), Singer
prides himself on the claim that the SDSC has gone four years without a
root-level intrusion to its systems - without using a firewall. "At the SDSC
we don't use a firewall, it's not feasible," he said. "Since we have to
secure hosts individually if we had a firewall it would be so open it would
be useless."
Singer said there is a perception that a firewall is a must-have. He cited
Visa's server requirements for online merchants which stated they must have
a firewall, but did not specify any configuration details. "Too much of the
security budget is being spent on firewalls which also get too much
attention [and] it's also 'cool' to have a new firewall to play with," he
said, adding that other appliances like intrusion detection and prevention
systems are an extension of the same idea.
"People are attracted to the idea that security can be bought [and] it's
hard to differentiate between marketing hype and reality," he said. "We have
a known 'good' config and when we find something is bad it's consistently
fixed."
Singer is adamant that intrusion will not be stopped by a firewall and
attackers have used Trojan SSH clients to steal user names and passwords.
Other practices Singer recommends include not running services you don't
need, for example, services that are only required internally don't need to
be external.
"You really need to think through your processes [and] relying on a firewall
means you're probably doing security wrong," he said. "Surveys have shown
that 60 percent of security breaches are internal but 70 percent of people
are worried about hackers on the outside. Internal breaches are worse,
because someone has a level of access and knows where the assets are. If an
attacker was really looking at compromising a company's assets he or she
would get a job in the mail room." Tag: www.webmoney24center.de.vu Tag: 173834

Press release
The Magical M&M's from SmallBizServer.Net, Mariette Knap and Marina Roos,
are delighted to announce that they've teamed with two established SBSers
and trainers to launch an exciting new forum supporting Microsoft's new
Small Business Specialist Community.
The Small Business Specialist Community is Microsoft's new partnership
opportunity for small business technology consultants, resellers and system
builders. The Small Business Specialist Community has many Microsoft
Partner-level characteristics (like the Gold, Certified and Registered
levels) and competency-like characteristics (such as network infrastructure,
security and information worker). "Because this exciting new program was
just announced by Microsoft, there are very few support resources for it."
Said Mariette Knap from SmallBizServer.Net. "Our forum is one of those
support resources."
Hosted by Beatrice Mulzer and Harry Brelsford, co-authors of the new "Small
Business Specialist Primer and 70-282 Exam Preparation Guide" book (SMB
Nation Press), this forum will answer business and technical questions
related to the Small Business Specialist Community. "Really there are two
forums. The first forum answers program-related questions such as becoming a
Small Business Specialist." Said well-known SBSer and international author
Harry Brelsford. "And the second forum supports the 70-282 certification
exam that is a certification component to qualify as a Small Business
Specialist. But equally important, Beatrice and I are here to support and
supplement Microsoft's community building efforts in the small business
segment."
Specifically, the new forum will:
- Provide insights into becoming a Small Business Specialist beyond the
Microsoft Partner Web site. For example, the Small Business Specialist
implementation in the United Kingdom has a few unique twists (a dated logo
badge that must be renewed annually)
Have an international flavor. Between Beatrice's native German language
fluency and Harry's extensive global travels, this forum will reflect the
true international flavor of the small business technology consulting
community.

Trend Micro ScanMail and missing network adapters
I have just reinstalled SBS 2000 after a crash and unrecoverable AD from
multiple backup sources. Most everything on the server is working but I have
a persistent problem while trying to install Trend Micro Scan Mail (after
successfully installing Office Scan) . After the Scan mail installs and I try
to reboot the server, the server hangs. After I manually turn off the server
and restart, my network connection are unavailable. They still appear in the
device manager, but do not appear in the task bar or in the properties on "My
Network Places".
Any suggestions:
Here is the out put of my event log just before and right after a restart:

SBS 2000 - New AD (users manually re-created) - Can I restore Exch
Hey guys,
Got kind of an urgent problem. I wanted to reinstall one of our SBS 2000
servers. I backed up the system state and exchange using NT Backup. I
reinstalled W2k, updated to SP4, and reinstalled SBS 2000. When I tried to
restore the System State I keep getting errors. The first time I got a BSOD
on boot up after the restor. I cound't get into anything (Safe mode, safe
mode w/ command, directory services restore mode), and nothing seemed to fix
the problem. I tried repairing and still had the same problem. I gave up and
reformatted, did the whole thing over and next time it would boot up to the
login screen, but this time I didn't have a mouse pointer, and the keyboard
wouldn't work. (It worked outside of windows - during boot) I almost am ready
to just create a new AD with all of the same info and recreate the users.
Would it still be a possibility to restore the Exchange server information if
I did that or not? Thanks in advance!

Cannot delete exchange mailbox
Seem to have an old mailbox stuck in exchange (SBS 2000)
If I list all mailboxes in the first storage group then one of them (user
long since departed and deleted off the system) has an red X against it
if I try to 'Purge' Exchange says:
"The operation cannot be performed because this mailbox is already connected
to an existing user"
The original user has gone but if I try to "Reconnect"
Exchangesays:
The operation cannot be performed because this mailbox is already connected
to an existing user
if I select OK Exchange says:
"The object has not been replicated to the destination server yet wait for
replication to complete and try again"
Well been waiting for six months now and no change.
I did try to add the original user back in under the same name but just
ended up with a new mailbox alonside the old one
Any ideas
Thanks, David, UK Tag: www.webmoney24center.de.vu Tag: 173798

SBS2K Exchange Web Mail
Hi there,
We are currently using SBS2K. We want to be able to access our exchange
server over the internet. We have a ADSL broadband connection with a fixed
IP. However the ISA filter wizard will not allow the Exchange server to post
on the internet since it treats the ADSL connection as a DIAL UP connection.
Is there anyway around this?
Cheers

Limiting user access via policies
Hi,
Apart from setting the user up as a member of the users group on the
workstation, what other lockdown mechanism can i use.
I have a user who's husband is in our line of work but he keeps on telling
her how to do this and that.
What other methods are effective and not disruptive to the general
operation.
I've used the default policy in the domain but they affect the admins too.
Such as :-
Disabling task manager
Disabling windows update
Disabling regedit
Disabling run
Disabling the taskbar & start menu
I've had to place the user as a member of the user group(workstation) due to
their bad nature.
I read about Organisation Units but I'm a bit stuck.
I would love some feedback on how to go about this.
Thank you

VPN Drive mapping
My situation
SBS2000
VPN & OWA in use
Drive mapping with DOS script
situation works fine with most vpn clients
however, when the client also activates offline folder settings, the
clients cannot find the drive mappings. the only thing they see are the
folders & files they made to available off line.
Running the DOS script helps sometimes but mostly you can not find the
mappings.
(it seems the computer thinks its not connected to the server)
I tried this with my own XPpro client. and indeed when I activate the
'available offline' my drive mappings are not working. As soon as i disable
the make 'available offline' it works fine again.
btw.
OWA works fine and also pinging to the fileservers are ok. I am almost sure
that the 'make available offline' is the cause. caused be the slow (cable or
adsl) connection?
If so , is there a patch or so, or is there an other reason

kind regards

How to forward the port from the router to the external NIC of the
Hi, all,
I did noticed some Tech. persons say somthings like forward the port (eg.
25) to the external NIC of the sbs server several times, but I still don't
know how to actually do this. Can anybody show me how to do this? Thanks very
much. Although I have been in this NB for a while (10 months), i still think

Exchange System Manager Installation
How do I install the Exchange System manager on another computer using the
SBS installation discs? I could do it if I had the Exchange 2000 install
discs, but I so not have access to a set. I only have access to the SBS
installation media. I am under the impression that Exchange is part of the
installation of SBS.
Thanks for helping a clueless office manager? Tag: www.webmoney24center.de.vu Tag: 173786
Event 5501
I continuously get the following error in the event log. Where the ip
address displayed is related to a previous ISP that was once used. I can't
locate any relation to that IP Address in any settings. I don't believe it's
causing any problems except for the 10 extra log entries per day.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
