Due to a hardware failure in sbs 2000 and the time
consumed in its repair of both mail and all other
services, we decided to put a new sbs 2000 server in place.

this was installed and pathched and all users setup, using
the same server name and domain name

all seemed fine untill we introduced it to the network,

the first thing we noticed was that some units would not
log in, so we decided to remove the unit from the domain
and reregit back to the domain. On rereg it stated the
domain could not be contacted yet its ip was provided by
the server and it had been placed in the servers dns. If
you log into the network as administrator services can be
seen but we dont have a master browser service.

Looking at the server we find Wins service has stated but
MSwins service in the mmc state it cannot connect due
to "path not found" we seen to have lost some connectivity
within out network and although we have reinstalled all
the tcp services and network services we cannot get wins
to correctly connect. Technet has provided only one
solution to this type of problem relating to file/print
sharing and remote reg service but they seem fine.

Can anybody suggest why wins is not working corectly this
stops all net browse services on the domain and is a major
problem!!!!!!!

Hi Alan,

Can you post the ipconfig/all from the server please?
Do you have options 044 and 046 (0x8) in DHCP-server, Scope Options?

The scope options in the dhcp are set 05, 06 44 and 46
they resolve as they are entered aswell shoping
connectivity to dns

the ipconfig all shows two nics

external nic ipaddress ang gateway with 2 external dns
servers config ( also used internal dns config still no
effect on wins) ip address of server with dns shown
internal on the second adapter no gateway

Hi Alan,

Wondering about that option 05. You also should have option 003 (router)
pointing to your internal nic-IP. Option 015 should point to your local
ad-name.
DNS on your servernics should *only* point to your server-IP.

Please post the ipconfig/all from the server.

Hi Alan,

DNS on your external nic should *only* point to your server-IP.
On your internal nic make sure that 'register in DNS' and 'add primary
suffix' are checked (DNS tab of advanced TCP/IP). On the external nic they
should be unchecked.
Check bindingorder in Network Connections, Advanced, Advanced, and make sure
the internal nic is on top.
Rerun ICW.

Are you also running RRAS? Make sure you have applied the regedits in

rras is running by default but 292822 states "Complete the
steps in this section only if the Routing and Remote
Access server is running the WINS service. Additionally,
if the server is running Small Business Server 2000 SP1,
Small Business Server 2000 SP1a, or Windows Small Business
Server 2003, you do not have to complete the steps in this
section. By default, these versions of the Windows server
are configured to prevent the server from registering the
PPP adapter's IP address in the WINS database." this
server is running sp1 do we need to complete these edits??

Yes, Alan, you will still need to apply those regedits.

Can you confirm that on your internal nic, TCP/IP, advanced, tab WINS the
Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled?
