I recently upgraded a W2K/SQL7 server to SBS2000. During

AOL Bouncing through SBS
Has anyone had a problem with AOL mail bouncing back to
the SBS servers? We have 4 clients that have various ISP

Hi,
I read somewhere that you can't defrag the exchange

Internal Web Server
I have recently changed from a linux router to a cisco
SOHO router. I knew nothing about Linux so that is why I
changed. Since I have switched to the cisco I have been
unable to get to the web server internally using the
domain name. I can get there with the ip address. I
unplugged the router and still was unable to get to the
web page using the domain name. I put a www host record in
my dns and put the web servers IP address in it. I am
still unable to get to it using the domain name. This is
the first dns record i have put in so I am not sure if I
have it correct.

Problems with .exe files!
Hi,
My name's Pedro, I have an SBS2000 server and last week it got infected with
two viruses: PE_Parite.A and PE_Parite.B. We cleaned the computer, but now
we can't find some .exe files. The backup application can't run because it's
missing its .exe file. Other applications that are not working in the
Administrative Tools are ODBC, Telnet, and Terminal Services Manager. In the
Small Business Server Administrator Console, the IIS can't find its .exe
file. I just wanted to know if there was a way to restore our Server without
having to format it, again. Can I install those services without having to
format the server? Or can any one tell me where to find the .exe files in
the CDs so that I could do a 'copy and paste'?
Thanks in advance!

Email reply address setup question
We are using Exchange Server 2000 with SBS2000 server and Outlook

POP3 Connector with Dialup
I setup my first client with a modem for Internet access. All my other
clients had broadband access but this one is out in the middle of nowhere,
so I had no choice. I ran through the ICW and choose the correct settings as
far as I know. The users were able to send email but couldn't receive. From
the server, I couldn't connect to the ISP's POP3 server. Figured that was
the reason so made a Packet Filter in ISA to allow outbound TCP 110. Once I
was able to telnet to the POP3 server on port 110 from the server, then it
was able to pull down email. Did I miss something in the ICW or is this how
it is supposed to be done?

Outlook Profiles
Why does the Outlook profiles get created automatically and then other times
it doesn't? I just setup a new network with 5 computer that are exactly the
same. We purchased Office XP Standard through Open License and I installed
that identical to every computer. But 3 out of 5 of them doesn't create a
Outlook profile when a user logs on. You have to go through the Outlook
profile wizard every time. But on the other computers, it gets configured
automatically. Where is this setting stored at, so I can take a look and see
if I can fix it?

the WINS service might not be installed.
The error was: The network path was not found
I have checked file and print sharing is enabled and

It finally hit me. Slow network drive browsing from an XP Pro client
Oh no. I thought I avoided this one. Browsing one my SBS servers is very
slow. User opens up My Computer, clicks on the mapped drive, and the
contents show about 15 seconds later. About 300 folders in this directory.
My XP Pro clients are SP1. Server is SP1 with ISASP1. This is a new server
so I have not patched it with any critical updates yet so I am hoping that
is my problem, that this is a common issue that will be fixed by downloading
patches via Windows Update. Please tell me I am right. Or am I assuming and
you know what happens.

Memory Question, do I have enough free?
SBS2000, SP1. Looking at my free memory, and it is 57% or 883 MB total is
1.5 gig. Is this low? Is the rest overhead? Two 73 scsi drives, 1 internal
tape drive. What is using all my memory. My Pagefile is 1.5 times my
physical ram and the page file is located on a seperate partition on the
drive. What do you think? This is with NO users connected to it, just my
terminal services session active. Thanks

Antivirus Question, do I need exchange agent in this situation?
One of my clients did not want her POP3 settings changed. All email is
coming down from the ISP. Her choice. But we are going to use SMTP in
Exchange for mail going out. When I ran ICW, I am using SMTP for Exchange,
don't change POP3. Have Symantec Corporate Edition loaded 8.1, just real
time scanning on the server, excluding the Exchange files as recommended by
MS and Symantec
Do I need the Exchange agent, which she paid for, in this situation since my
client wants the virus duties done at the client? She knows that the server
is not blocking executible that might have viruses but here users are pretty
computer savy, I am understanding.
She just want the Server to manage the clients.
I understand the real time scanning scans anything coming through ISA anyway
so Exchange might be too much. That the Server side of things scan
everything written to the server HD, no matter what it is.
What do you think?

ISA Problems
Hi
On one of our other remote servers we have just installed adsl,
unfortunately we could not get the SBS administrator console snapin to
initialise so we could not run the internet connection wizard. I went into
the ISA configuration and removed the tick box for use dialup and have
updated the LAT with the IP addresses for the router. I then rebooted the
server and everything seemed fine i.e. everyone had fast broadband internet
access.
Patting my self on the back for a job well done (i should not have been so
smug!) I left site. 4 hours later I received a call telling me that no one
could no longer access the internet. I got them to reboot the router but to
no avail. In desperation I asked them to reboot the server which sorted the
problem. Well that wwas for a dew hours anyway. I contacted BT (the ISP) as
we could no longer ping the router theny told me that there was a lot of
traffic passing through the router and this was causing the problem.
I got them to disconnect the machines on the network one by one until the
traffic stopped. This occured when the server was disconnected. I suspected
that they may have a virus such as code red so i got them to check that the
AV was fully updated and asked them to do a virus scan. This turned up no
viruses. I have installed tcp view to see if anything is causing this
problem but nothing seems to be amiss.
I can only think that it is something that was done in the ISA
configuration.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance. Tag: windows 98 synchro Tag: 117317

SBS Down - and I'm not too happy either.
I have come across an install of SBS 2K that seems to have become
somewhat of a pigs breakfast after who know woho did what.
First issue is that it takes 10+ minutes to boot up.
Second is that a bunch of services like the Shared Fax service, ICW
and others show as shutting down immediatly after the bootup, and stay
that way till the next reboot.
( there are no errors in the error log )
Services themselves cannot be stopped or their mode (Auto / Manual
/ Disableed) changed.
Components like the Fax service won't uninstall with an error message that
the Install server failed to respond ( Install Server ??? ) so I can try a
reinstall.
Computers on the Lan all loose their connection for a moment when certain
computers are turned off. ( Browser service is disabled on all workstations
which are Win 2K ) - this is deadly to their Database based applications.
Could all of this be related ???
Any ideas as to where to begin on a diagnostic/repair stratergy ?
( .... bearing in mind that the system no longer recognises the Travan
Backup
device either. )
TIA for any and all constructive comments,
.....or humerous ones that may lift my spirits.

Oooops...cant connect to XP remotely
Having problems on a site that all access to network shares asks for a
username and password (all pcs), as if its not authenticated on domain, put
in details even administrator and share not availble, however internet OK

Using VNC from server, thought I would take out domain and rejoin..rebooted
and I can just see (metaphorically) that VNC window asking for a password
you know when you first install (in a different profile now so VNC thinks
its a new install) now cant connect. You guessed it remote desktop not
switched so cant even go that way...
Any ideas on original problem ? (apologies for repost as original post going

Future Set-up (hardware and software already acquired)
-SBS 2000 Software + Dual processor with 1GB Ram and 2 x SCSI drives =
(budget constraints will only allow use of Software Raid) which will run =
Terminal services in Remote Administration Mode
-Windows 2000 Server software running as non-DC; Dual processor w/ 512 =

Where I'm Confused - what I am trying to achieve
Wish to continue having 5 x PC Clients located in our office but in =
addition to these I want to allow remote log-on for:
(a) 4 x PC's, each located in different retail stores (Short and medium =
logon periods predicted)
(b) Remote logon from a PC located in another country (Long logon =
periods predicted)
(c) Remote logon from a mobile Portable PC - local and international =
(Short logon periods predicted)
The 5 office based Client PC's will most probably make extensive use as =
Terminal Services Application clients of the Windows Server 2000.
(1) What OS should I install on these office PC's - can I continue with =
WinNT, install Win 2000 or XP Pro, the latter especially because of the =
Terminal Services license issue?
(2) Can I mix different client OS's or is it recommendable that I =
standardize the OS's on all client equipment- remote and local?
(3) Should I even consider a VPN? Overseas connection (direct logon or =
through the internet) only costs the price of a local call, but retail =
stores permanently logged on to an Office Server Intranet Site would =
be ideal. VPN local costs seem nonetheless out of our budget and rather =
expensive.
I wish to make a fresh SBS install, with Exchange Server fully =
functional plus a new ADSL (ISDN capable) Internet connection.
Thus I cannot put down our existing SBS 4.5 set-up until the SBS Server =
+ Win 2000 Server is configured and running.=20
Then I will gradually put down old PC client machines and finally the =
old SBS 4.5 server. (And then I'll throw a huge party - you are all =
invited! Drinks on me)
Wishlist
Can someone recommend a ISDN capable ADSL modem/router/wireless capable =
(in the least 802.11b) which I could set-up in the above reality with =
the following future-proof (ha, ha!) characteristics, namely:
(4) ADSL modem which can connect to another ISDN point so as not to =
disconnect our existing ISDN dial up connection (we presently have 2 x =
ISDN NT boxes; that is 4 channels are available simultaneously)=20
(5) That has Ethernet connection so as to connect to our existing HUB =
but also has at least 4 x Wireless access point capable for future =
wireless PC client connection ( In the future this would solve our =
present Ethernet wiring which is very untidily set-up)=20
(6) Perhaps also have Print-server capability? (Pushing my luck a little =
here, not essential - but let's have a go anyway)
(7) What do I do with regard to DHCP or DNS server capabilities that are =
present in many of these routers? Will this not conflict with the DHCP =
of the SBS 2000 configuration?
(8) Same as above for Firewall - do I use the hardware Firewall =
simultaneously as the ISA software or do I opt for one only? I do not =
want to get into the software vs. hardware firewall debate, but . I'm =
really confused.
Finally:
=20
(9) After all of the above - How many NIC cards should I consider? SBS =
server motherboard already has one onboard 100Mb capable. Can I connect =
another PCI slot with additional NIC card or should I install at least 2 =
identical NIC cards and disregard the onboard NIC?
The consultation fee check for any answers posted are already in the =
post.

I am trying to move my 5.5 data over to Exchange 2000. I
have an exchange 2000 book and it says to upgrade your nt
4.0 server to Win 2000 and move the users with the ADC.
Then, migrate the exchange users with the migration
wizard and then run the AD clean up wizard to merge the
two together. I have migrated the exchange data over
with the migration tool but I cannot upgrade my NT 4.0
server to Win 2000 because my Exchange server is on my NT
4.0 DC server. I have tried creating new users close to
the same name as my Exchange 5.5 users and running the AD
clean up wizard on them to combine them and it seemed to
work but I cannot log on to the domain with a user I have
done this to. I am able to log on to the domain with the
administrator account so I know its got to be an issue
with the users I have gotten from Exchange 5.5. Does
anyone have any ideas!!!??? Tag: windows 98 synchro Tag: 117119
smallbizserver.net
Hi, I was looking for the tips and tricks section on smallbizserver.net but
the site has been redesigned and I can no longer find it, nor could I find a
search box. (looks good though!)
I inhereted an SBS2K shop that has a multitude of problems, many DNS related
such as domain named .com instead of .lan or .local and I think the servers
ip address has changed causing lots of dns errors in the event log.
Thanks,

OWA SSL
Having a slight problem with the secure OWA setup.
I have followed the guide on how to setup it up on the
smallbusinessserver.net website but ran into a wall.
After u get to the part where u must restart the IISadmin and the ISA
control servcies I am getting a error when trying to start up all the
firwall services. RCP server not available. exchange starts but all
firewall, web proxy...etc are down.
However it shows the RPC service is started but all the options to restart,
stop..etc are grayed out.
Everything was working fine before I tried to setup the SSL

SBS Configuration
Hi,
Wonder if anyone can settle an arguement I'm having. I've got a
client running SBS 2000 on a clone server, spec:
P4 2.4 Ghz (single)
1Gb Memory
2x 36Gb Ultra-160 SCSI II mirrored (software, not RAID).
running about 12 users, possibly expanding to 25 in the next few
years.
Currently only Exchange and Win2k are installed.
Does anyone see any issues installing SQL Server on here for an approx
100Mb database? Currently memory usage is high, Pervasive SQL is
installed to run another application although CPU usage is quite low
(less that 5% typically).
Is there anything I can use other than task mgr or perfmon to show
just how little the server is being used and that this upgrade
shouldn't be a problem?
(as an aside there is also another server 'specified' to run a
seperate Pervasive SQL DB which is running dual Xeon's, 2Gb of memory,
a RAID-5 array and is spending more time virus scanning the SQL
directory than it is actually doing any database work - opinions on
this also appreciated...)
Any help appreciated,
Russell.

Forced to change Internal IP Address?
Hello,
I have a multi-homed sbs2000 installation.
These days, the only item on the external nic is a legacy unix system
(address = 192.9.200.3, 255,255,255,0).
I would like to get everyting on the same subnet, so i can set up my
internet router on the external card (via the isa server)
If i could change the internal nic on the sbs to (say) 192.9.200.2, i
could
have the unix server and the sbs on the same subnet.
I have read the article How do I change the internal IP address on
SBS2000? - Wayne Small on www.sbsfaq.com
and this seems ok.
Could someone confirm that my proposed address is a valid "private"
one?
Any other comments would be most welcome...
thanks

Terminal Services, Shared Fax and Group Contacts
Hi,
I have a client running TS on their SBS2k box. All is good.....until
the try to fax from it. I have setup shared fax and outlook/exchange
profiles for the users which works just fine. However. When they try
to fax and pull a fax number from the public folders, it doesn't
happen....They can't see any of the public folders from within TS
shared fax (and YES they are set to view as an outlook address book).
If trying to access the public folders via outlook on the TS,
everything is fine.
Please note that shared fax/TS/Group contacts works just fine if they
are using their local PC, but on the TS it does not.
Any ideas???? I would be most grateful to anyone who can help solve
it. Tag: windows 98 synchro Tag: 117067

Will this be possible.

The second segment will be on a gigabit link to another machine.
My question is how do I go about doing this.
I need to transfer data from the sbs to the other machine on a different nic

Faxing multiple documents
Is it possible to send a single fax with multiple
documents attached with shared fax? I don't think so,
but my client is wondering if he can do this instead of
buying some expensive LAN faxing solution. He basically
wants to be able to take a cover letter, a certificate or
form, and another document, and send them out as one
fax. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Outgoing mail specific domain
Hi all,
We've setup a SBS2000 with exchange. Everything works fine
however we have a small problem. Our customer does not
have a own domain, so we use a free mailprovider zonnet.nl.
In the SMTP setting for the user we therefore use smtp:
@zonnet.nl. We can send and receive mail fine with these
settings however we cannot mail to other zonnet users. So
if we mail to user@zonnet.nl it doens't work, e.g.
user@planet.nl works fine. Can anyone help us out here,
for we do not understand why this is happening.
Thnx,

Error message opening Excel file from SBS server 4.5
I get error messages where an Excel or Powerpoint file
can't be opened directly from the server. If I drag the
file & then open the Excel file, it will open. It gives
me an error the server cannot be found. I have a Small
Business Server 4.5 running Windows NT SP6. The clients
are Windows 2000 clients. Even after running the security
updates on both ends I still get the error messages.
Any clues? Tag: windows 98 synchro Tag: 117046

ADSL Router or Gateway?
Have just passed the threshold on our exchange for ADSL (Hooray!!!) now
planning for installation. Can go one of two ways and need to understand
which is best/preferred.
1. Additional Ethernet card in server and modem/router to connect to ADSL
using ISA to protect connection or,
2. Separate ADSL Gateway/Router with built-in firewall connected directly to
network and ADSL Modem.
Any thoughts/comments appreciated.

Mail problems.
I have recently had a problem with my SMTP mail. I had a look in the SMTP
queue going from my server it looked as if someone had managed to send a
load of messages from an address which is not associated with system. I
have followed the Article "HOW TO: Block Open SMTP Relaying and Clean Up
Exchange Server SMTP Queues on SBS 2000". I could not connect using telnet
to SMTP which I presume rules that out as a possible vulnerability. Has
anyone got any ideas as to how this attack occured and how I could go about
preventing future attacks.

4.5 to 2003
My last SBS 4.5 client has finally commited to upgrading. They've purchased
the SBS 2000 upgrade, and taken out Software Assurance for SBS 2003.
I know (hope) that SBS 2003 won't be too long now, and only a priveleged few
are likely to have sufficient information to take a guess at the answer,
but: is it necessary to first upgrade to 2000 as an intermediate step to
2003, or will it be possible to go directly from 4.5 to the 2003
installation? It just saves some work and unnecessary downtime if we can do
1 upgrade instead of 2.

SBS2K programmes/licencing
Are you able to use the shared fax programme on another machine from disc 2
on the sbs discs, I am unable to use the Shared Fax on the SBS machine as it
has a COM's compatibility error with the raid controller. If not where are
you able to obtain the programme from as I cannot find it anywhere.
Thanks in advance.

intermittent problems connecting client machines to SBS2k's Exchange mailboxes
Hi,
I've encounter intermittent problems when I want to connect to the exchange
server via client machines running on win98se. Sometimes it connects and I
can see the mailbox, sometimes it doesn't. And on Apple macintosh running
OS9, I can only connect if I set it to use Appletalk as the protocol and not
TCP/IP. OWA works perfectly fine. Has anyone encounter this problem before?
Also, I didn't enable the DNS server on the sbs2k server because I have
another machine which runs the DNS. Thanks

Automatic updates on SBS box still failing - can someone walk me through what is required please
Ok.
SBS box was switched from single nic to dual nic + adsl router setup a few
weeks back. Client auto updates were failing until I added https throughput
in ISA protocol rules. SBS server auto updates continue to fail. I have
added similar https throughput in ISA packet filters to see if this clears
things?
What else should I be looking for.
cheers,

Backup Exchange problems
Newbie question!
I'm trying to make a Total backup of my Exchange server
but the backup program is not able to open the Data files.
First when I disable all Exchange server services it's
able to backup these files. I mean the files like
"priv1.stm, pub1.stm, priv1.stm, pub1.stm"
and som DB000????.DAT-files from the Exchsrvr\MTADATA
folder. What am I doing wrong? Isn't a Backup program
supposed to able to backup a total Computer without
closing down all services? Sounds strange to me. I am
using normal copy mode with MS Windows Backup, Veritas
Version 5 (which is included in SBS2000).
Thanks

That's not possible with W98 I'm afraid. You'll have to upgrade to at least
W2K.
