 - Couple XP Client questions 1) After going through the SBS>Add User wizard & then manually setting up the XP machine, the user is not displayed in Control Panel>Users on the client machine. I can click add & type the username to add the user without problems. Can someone confirm that this is expected behavior? 2) When using the Add User wizard in SBS, you can assign a user to a computer. How do you reassign a user to a different computer?  - Help with unauthorised relay problem? I have a server that is collapsing under the weight of unauthorised email being relayed. I've followed the KB324958 guide, my server was not an open relay but I have removed all the external authenticated access relay settings, changed passwords etc but still the queues are filling up. At the moment I'm still on the bit where I've configured the SMTP connector to forward all mail to a smart connector so that I can flush the queues but they are constantly filling up! I'm wondering if I have a compromised account but have changed all the passwords and having closed external access I don't know what else to do, any advice gratefully received.  - DNS disabling its self I am running a SBS w/ win 2000. It acts as my DC, DNS, Exchange server and has AD. Everytime I reboot this machine the dns does not start. Either I can turn dns to manual and of course I would need to start it manually. If I set the machine to automatic it will show up as disabled after the reboot. I currently only have one dns server running (my bad), but this really makes me stressed to get the dns back up after a reboot. Any suggestions as to why the dns keeps on disabling itself? This may be unrelated, but I'll give it a go. The group policy in the Active Directory displays an access denied message everytime I try to open it, and I cannot create any policies.  - opening ports?? I have a paging program that I am trying to get to work on my SBS2000 network. The software company states that I need ports 80 and 444 open so the pages can connect to the servers using WCTP and SNpp protocols. How would I do this and how vulnerable would it make my network?  - Advice I currently hav Windows XP Pro. I'm running my own little web server for a small business I have. I have received interest from others that they would like me to host their sites as well. The problem with XP Pro is that I can only maintain one server in IIS and can not creat multiple virtual servers for each client, at least that is what I'm told. Anyway, I am considering getting another computer and loading one of the Microsoft server OS's. I don't think I need Win Server 2003 Enterprise and after doing some homework, I'm under the impression the Small Buisiness Server 2003 is Win Server 2003 Standard with some business additions.  - POP3 Connector am running SBS2000 and using the POP3 connector for Exchange. Not all of my email accounts set up at the ISP go to the Exchange server in the end, some individuals never connect to the server and use Outlook Express only. However when someone connected to the Exchange server send an email to someone within the company that is not connected to the Exchange Server they receive an delivery failure notice from the Exchange server that that email account doesn't exist.  - What is the best way to move SBS2K to a new server? I am trying to replace the current server with a new one. What is the best way of doing this without reloading all the programs,SBS 2K and users accounts. I am thinking about doing a tape restore or using Norton Ghost.  - New Installation problem I have been given the job of creating a new installation of SBS 2000. New to this as all our previous server are Novell based. The server is new, and the installation has been done as default throughout. Everything works except web access from either the server or the client. We have a ADSL router plugged directly in the 2nd NIC (external) card. The ISA has been installed as default, and the settings for the 2 network cards are: Internal: IP Address 192.168.16.2 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Default gateway blank External: IP Address: 192.168.0.254 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 192.168.16.2 The 192.168.0.254 is the IP address of the ADSL router. The configuration of the client network card is IP 192.168.16.10 Subnet 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 192.168.16.2. I know there is a stupid mistake somewhere, but I am out of my depth. I can ping the internal netword card on the server, but it timesout on the external one. If I try to connect to the web on the client PC it gets a DNS lookup failure message.  - Internal network falls when VPN setup Hi, We have SBS2K two NICs 1 router. The system has been running since May 2003without to many problems. I have recently been trying to allow VPN access into the server for some users to get emails etc. I followed the guide on SBS2000.info and caused big problems, clients couldn't log on internally and WINS stopped running on the server. Email was coming in but not going out. I put everything back how it was (I think) and then tried again but caused the same problems again.  - Access contacts from public folders offline I have a public folder created to store all my Client Contact records. I connect to my server remotely with a dial up AOL account and then establish a VPN connection. Once connected, I then start Outlook to check my e-mail which I have setup as an IMAP mail account. I see the public folder where my client contacts reside and I have selected it for synchronization. However, I cannot figure out how to actually access these contacts via my address book. Even if winfax can use the shared modem, every fax that I send I receive an error from winfax on the xp box "unable to send data to modem. Try shut down"; the fax is anyway sent correctly.  - OT: Offline folder synchronization & molasses... Hello Again: If you read the other post, you know I had a laptop tank with multiple injuries. I was in a pinch so I purchased a new one. It's a beautiful machine with one glaring issue that I haven't been able to rectify. Offline folder synchronization is SLOW. (and I mean SLOOOOOOOOOOW). If I manually copy files to and from the unit the transfer rate is 'normal'. But if I try to use synchronization that same transfer will take 10 to 20 times longer. I've used offline synchronization with other units with no problems at all. A couple of points of interest - the transfer is slow even if I engage file synchronization from another machine - it will work fine between any two machines as long as the machine IS NOT the new laptop. Also, the machine is equipped with built in wireless and 100/bt. No matter which system is currently in use the transfer rate is abysmal.  - OT: Replacing laptop OS sans floppy, sans CD-rom... Hola All: A series of events rendered a laptop useless. The OS (xp pro) would not boot in any mode (not even command prompt). There's no floppy on the unit and the internal CD/ROM is also dead. I was able to remove the HD safely and am transferring all of the data (using one of those external USB2.0 HD housings). I have no images of the HD but I do have the manufacturers original CD's. What's the most expedient method of getting a usable OS back on to the HD?  - SBS 2000 migration to separate Windows 2000 & Exchange 2000 Hi All, I have a machine running Small Business Server 2000 and I am now running it with almost 70 users, needless to say I am getting licensing error messages and I need to migrate to running a separate Windows 2000 Server operating system with Exchange 2000 (+ other bits if I want them). Now I have purchased my SBS 2000 migration kit that gives me the license for the base product and 5 CALs. I have also purchased 9 lots of the CAL migration packs so that I am now licensed for 50 users. I have also purchased 15 extra Windows 2000 server and Exchange 2000 CALs so that I am licensed for up to 65 users. So I am ready to do the migration. Now I have a brand new server and I have already installed Windows 2000 server onto it but I have not yet added it into the current Active Directory structure. I have not yet installed Exchange 2000 as this has to go after the server has become a domain controller. Here is what I understand about what is required to migrate users from the SBS 2000 server to the new domain controller. - Add the new Windows 2000 server into the Active Directory. - Install Microsoft Exchange 2000 and configure as an additional Exchange server under the same domain. - Run the Migration Wizard on the SBS 2000 server and choose to move all mailboxes and public folders to the new Exchange 2000 server. - Once complete move all users under Active Directory to the new server. Now is this correct? and if so are there any issues I should be aware of? What needs to be done to the SBS 2000 server to demote it and remove the Exchange server from Active Directory?  - Too Much Traffic I noticed today that by 11am our ISP said we had downloaded 230mb data. I found this because it was a slow adsl connection... I'm in no doubt that there has been heavy traffic somewhere. They say we've been doing it off and on for a week. Goodbye $150.00 All our ports are shut to the outside if you scan with say sygate or grc. Up todate NAV corporate finds nothing anywhere. I did an online av and trojan scan from Symantec, also clean. All systems are patched up todate and have had the baseline security and the lockdown wizard applied. In the ISA logs I can't find the traffic. I get may be 20 or 30 megs a day total in and out, which is what I would expect. I am looking in the right places, I can see the NAV corporate sigs coming in. Our Dlink 504 router had the remote access turned off. Can anyone suggest where else I should look for the trouble? We've had this router about a week... could I have done something idiotic that would be letting someone direct something through the router? I should add that exchange is not an open relay; set up as per msexchange.org, and will not relay in a telnet session.  - Terminal Services over ADSL Hi, I am looking at a company where there are 4 different locations/sites (soon to be 5). There are currently 74 users, 35 on the main, 20 on the secondary, 10 on another, 12 on another and the new site will have 8 to begin with. They have a lot of applications where they need to make sure that the info is the same no matter which site they go to!! Is it feasible to put in Terminal services on the main site and have all the other users connect this way?? Will it work efficiently over and ADSL line or will I need to look at putting in various leased lines?? Is there a more efficient way to do this to make sure that downtime is minimised and the clients see the same data regardless of which site they have to work from??  - Exchange Crash Hi all Our SBS2000 server has gone mad and the exchange services will not start and I am unable to get them to start. I have tried service packs and hotfixes but no response and it now all looks doomed! Is there any way of retriving the mailboxes from the server?? is it a particular file that stores all the mail data??  - Another VPN Problem!! Hi all We use SBS2000 and are trying to connect a remote office in London. They have a DSL connection in there Network. I have configured RRAS and have tested the VPN using my own dial-up ISP and it works fine but the guys in London keep getting errors 619 & 721. The only difference between them and me is that they are on a network with a static IP address and gateway. Is there some more configuring that I have to do??  - SBS 2000 desktop faxing service with V92 modem Hello All I have a Windows 2000 server SP1 (Actualy SBS 2000). I have always used v90 modems up until recently. I have never had an issue with the SBS 2000 desktop faxing service (Networked). Now I am using V.92 modems and I can not get the fax modem to send faxes. I am always getting fatal error and never get past the handshake. I beleive the issue is accross all v92 modems and the implimentation of quick connect which shortens the handshake time. I put a 33.6 modem or V90 on the same server, all works fine. These days all I have is V92 and I can not get any of the modems to work. I am trying init strings and even tried turning data compression and error correction off. I tried 33.6 and standard 56 k driver and init at&fx3+msv90dt but nothing seems to work Any ideas ?  - RAID Configuration Hi all, I have a dell SBS 2000 server that has a raid configuration the primary partition is 12gb, they have run oout of space and i'd like to upgrade the disks. Can i use a third party disk image utility such as ghost to clone the drive? i think they are ide drives so ghosting should not be a problem. I have no experience with raid and am not sure of the effects of doing this. I have read that you can possible extend the partition but the other 2 are getting pretty full as well. Following suggestions made to me through this NG, I created a batch file with a NET SEND commend, and used Scheduler to send it at the desired time. Worked fine - except this particular client's LAN runs a separate application Terminal Server. Users complained that it takes 15-20 clicks to clear their screens of the broadcast message!  - Problem with Password Changes For some reason, some users on my SBS 2K network have been having problems changing their passwords. I have one user, running Windows 98, who changed her password and now can't get validated by the Exchange Server. This same user has no problems connecting to the Exchange Server from a Windows XP machine, so I think it's OS-related. I tried deleting the *.pwl files on the Win98 machine, to no effect. Both machines are running Outlook XP, so it's not an Outlook difference. In addition, I have another user (on a 2000 machine) who has to reset his password 3 or 4 times (resetting to the same password each time) before the change takes effect, i.e. before he can log into the machine with the new password. I had thought that this was related to the fact that the memory on the server is low (1-2%), but apparently that's a normal effect for a server running Exchange. So now I'm puzzled.  - SUS and Group Policy Things seem to be working right but I think I might have broken a few rules to get there... Here's what I did. After installing SUS on our SBS2K I made a new OU directly below the "company.local" domain in Active Directory called "Workstations". I then moved all the client PC's that I wanted to be updated (ie all but the server and a remote client) out of the "Computers" default container in Active directory and into the Workstations OU. (This is where I think I may have it wrong). I then made a new GPO for the Workstations OU and set windows update to automatically download and install updates. I made a seperate GPO in the Domain Controllers OU for the server that just auto downloads and notifies when ready to install. Although all the workstations have taken on the policy (Windows Update settings are reflecting the policy settings and are greyed out) I'm thinking that I shouldn't have moved the client PCs from the Computers default container in active directory. Should I have made a group within the Workstations OU and added the client computers to this group? If so, should it be a security group or a distribution group (whats the difference)?  - SBS2k vs 2003-Comparisons? I am considering SBS2003 upgrade but I am not sure there is any substantial gain here. I have a website we host right now with one more in the future (~ 1yr), 1 remote office, and 12 workstations. I can not find anything that shows me any big advantage SBS2003 has over SBS2k. I have heard one individual say that Advanced Server 2003 was quite a piece of work; Unfortunately, I do not know if it is part of SBS2003 premium ed.  - Backup to remove transaction logs Hi there, I have search for the best way to remove logs (E000xxxx) and been pointed to the smallbizsever site and It suggests to run full/normal backp on "Information store and system state".  - exchange issue A couple of weeks ago a user's machine bluescreened and we tried to fix driver that was at issue but finally ended up doing a repair install. The user was able to log in to the domain and use the files from the server but when she tried to use exchange it said "address book not available" or can't find Exchange server. We reintalled outlook, deleted the outlook profile, and rejoined the domain. still unable to get on the exchange server from this machine. We tried to login with other users and get the same message.  - System Monitor Hello - I am benchmarking a SBS 2000 box using System Monitor. Its a PIII 866 with 1.3 GB RAM. The Processor Queue Length counter is covering consistently around 10. The % Processor Time is near 10% (90% free) as well. I would expect the % Processor Time counter to be higher, with the relatively high Queue Length counter. This is over a week. Microsoft suggests a bottleneck when the Queue Length counter is greater than 2. Without checking each thread, has anyone seen this behavior before?
