After running SBS2000 from around 10 users (around 3 years ago) to it's
maximum today (at 50!) we are now in the position to get of SBS and go for
something that caters for more than 50 users.

We are planing to purchase two boxes -

1. to have on it Server 2003 Std with around 60 CALS that will be our PDC
running AD running ISA 2004 Server (with 60 CALs too) - do we need 60 CALS on
Win03 Server if we plan to have around 60 people (clients) on the network?

2. to have Exchange 2003 with 60 CALs(?) - is this correct?

We want to use the SBS applications - i.e Exchange and ISA as we also run
GFI's MSEC and DSEC and MESS to pick up our mail from POP3.

Has anyone done any work on stepping forward from SBS2000 in a 50+ user
environment and advise on CALs and the setup above. The reason why we choose
2 boxes is that we want to separate the PDC/Internet (Server03 running
ISA2004) machine from the Mailserver (running Exchange) in case of future
problems.

Are ISA2004 and Exchange2003 the latest proxy and mail software from
Microsoft or are there any changes that will appear soon?

I need advise please.

FYI - SBS 2003 allows 75 users.

Hi
SBS2003 can take 75 users, but this may be a strain for one box.
I think if you CAL by device, you will only need the same number of licenses
as the number of users you ahve. (Each client can connect to as many servers
as it wants to). You will need W2K3 CALs and Exchange CAL's, ISA is licensed
per box it is on (I think)
Ideally you want your ISA server on a seperate machine on the perimeter of
your network (but behind your firewall). If you stick 3 nics in it you can
have DMZ and put your mail server there (may not be neccesary for POP but if
you move to SMTP is a good idea). Then you can have your DC behind the
friewwall and ISA server.
Hope this feeds some ideas

I can't speak to the CAL issues - you really want to call MS or a licensed
reseller for CAL info. But I'd recommend a) put ISA on a separate server
entirely - doesn't have to be great hardware b) have your file/print/server
be a DC c) have Exchange on a member server, not a DC and d) have another
cheap & cheerful box as another DC for failover/redundancy. This might break
your budget, but it would be the best setup.

ISA can be great but you might also look into a hardware firewall appliance
like a decent Sonicwall or PIX.

Not soon, no.
