Today I tried to upgrade an existing install of SBS 4.5 (SP6a) to SBS 2000
using the CD's from MS labeled as upgrade.
The stupid thing says that it cannot upgrade the current version and that I
should perform a new install. Well a clean install would be better except
that I need to be sure that the existing Exchange Email does not get wiped
out in the process - which a new install would do and is not acceptable to
them.
Anyone see this before?
I cleared the warnings applying to Exchange and Proxy and LDAP and tried
again - still says it does not qualify. It baffles me - 4.5 to 2000 should
work fine. The data is on a D: drive the OS on C:. The only thing that
even occurs to me is that the C: drive is 3.99GB with 1.5GB free space. Has
anyone had problems upgrading if there is less the 4GB? The RAM is 512 and
the processor is 550Mhz so these should be OK.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated as otherwise I will spend my evening
making sure I know how to restore email and it seems like a painful process
from what I have read so far.
Or if anyone has restored email from 5.5 to 2000 and can pass along any
links or tips, including the pit falls that would also be appreciated just
in case I have to take that route.
Looks like I will be stuck in a computer room all weekend - but if I can
upgrade at least I may see some daylight.
Thanks,
Linda

Not really an error message - more like an error paragraph. I scribbled it
down.
Goes something like this;
Small Business Server cannot upgrade your current operating system. You
must first install Windows 2000 from the Small Business Server disk 1.
Click cancel to exit setup, backup any data or directories and run Windows
2000 Server setup. When Windows 2000 server setup concludes Small Business
Server 2000 setup starts automatically. Refer to Small Business Server
Planning and Installation Guide chapter 16 "Installing Small Business Server
2000."
Chapter 16 says to to proceed the way I have been - and then the licensing
agreement is to appear - I wish - no mention of this stop error that I can
find - I am still looking.
The SBS 4.5 OS is the standard full retail version as is the 2000 upgrade.
Have RAM, Disk space, the hardware is 2000 compliant - so what does it think
it is whining about?
A bit more detail in the above would be helpful instead of such a generic
error message.
Thanks,
Linda

Try this:

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=Small+Business+Server+cannot+upgrade+your+current+operating+system&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=eOYyJq0EBHA.1460%40tkmsftngp02&rnum=1

Marco tracked down the solution for me:

2. Create Key: HKLM\software\Microsoft\BackOffice Create REG SZ:
HKLM\software\Microsoft\BackOffice\SuiteVersion. Set the value to 4.5

Thanks again Marco and hope it works for you Richard.

I forgot to mention that I uninstalled the virus scan software also. The
computer does have only one NIC card (has a modem for access to the
Internet) and it is connected to a hub by itself - so that none of the users
could decide to try to connect just to see if the server was working during
the (for me at least) anticipated upgrade. I isolated it.

That should do the trick
[I love Google]

Re: upgrade wants new install instead - there goes the weekend. by Linda

Checked the registry and the entry under BackOffice for SuiteVersion 4.5 was
already there.
So no luck at all on the upgrade.
The best I can determine (they have had more then one person work on this
over the last few years) is that they probably started with NT4.0 server
(found the CD for this one) and then they have the SBS4.5 upgrade (full
retail version) disk. Is this path allowed for upgrading - one would think
so - but then many of us have been caught in that "seems like it should"
catch-22.
Will have to go the format and install route and restore the Exchange 5.5
email to Win 2000.
Any other ideas as to the failure of the upgrade appreciated.
Thanks,
Linda
