Hello.

We have an old SBS2000 server that nobody uses anymore. Can i upgrade it to
Windows Server 2003 Web Edition ?

I know, I know. Why don't i just wipe out the hard drive and install fresh ?

Answer: Were afraid to wipe it out just yet. We might still want some files
from it.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

No, you cannot "just" upgrade any version of SBS to a non SBS edition
You would have to use another box

FYI Web Edition will not join a domain and doesn't do AD

Hi Chris.

Now, i'm not an expert at this, but does this conflict with waht you said.

"Although computers running Windows Server 2003 Web Edition, can be members
of a Microsoft Active Directory service domain, Windows Server 2003 Web
Edition, cannot be a domain controller. Consequently, organizations cannot
use Windows Server 2003 Web Edition, alone to apply certain management
features, including Group Policy, Software Restriction Policies, Remote
Installation Services, Microsoft Metadirectory Services, Internet
Authentication Service (IAS), and others"

I found it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/evaluation/overview/web.mspx

Thanks,
Tony

Well that would be my mistake only in the regard that it cannot join a =
domain
But as it clearly states, Web Edition cannot be a Domain Controller, and =
SBS is a Domain Controller
YOu cannot DCPromo an SBS server down
AND the only way to 'upgrade' an SBS server is using the Transistion =
pack, which is no longer available for SBS 2000
You can add a server with Web Edition, but not upgrade the current OS =
"IN PLACE"
