Hello,

We have an SBS2000server with one NIC and a DSL modem and a Zywall firewall.
All the 12 work stations assign IP address automatically.

Weve been experiencing some slowness with the network recently, and an
engineer suggested that we assign a fixed IP address to each ws and remove
DHCP from the server.

Is removing DHCP as simple as deactivating the one scope that they have ?
Or should we completely remove it ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

I would suggest you leave everything as it is and check what is causing the
slowness. I don't know what benefit you will gain from switching to static
IPs from DHCP in that sense. What you need is to make sure that all the
workstations and the server are pointing to the server internal nic for DNS.

What's the OS on the workstations? Maybe you got some of those XP slowness
issues... I think theres an article on smallbizserver.net on the subject.

BTW-> To answer your question... just stop the service.

Hello Javier.
The workstations are: 2 win98, 2 win2000 and 8 winxp pro.

How do i make sure all ws and server are pointing to the server internal NIC
for DNS ?

Thanks,
Tony

Run IPCONFIG /ALL on the machines (including the server) and make sure where
it says DNS it has the internal IP address of the SBS box.

(I think the command in Win9x was winipcfg... but I'm not sure).

What Javier said...

And if you haven't done this, it makes things easier when you set the DHCP
server to pass the DNS/WINS settings to the clients when they obtain an IP.
Under (DHCP console) Server Options, set these options:

006 DNS Servers (to IP of SBS internal NIC)
044 WINS/NBNS Name Servers (to IP of SBS internal NIC)
046 WINS/NBT Node Type (to 0x8)

Also, under Scope Options > Properties
Check "Automatically Update DHCP Client in DNS", "Always update DNS", and
the "Enable updates for clients that do not support dynamic updates". I
think the last item is important for the 9x machines, but I'm a bit foggy
about that one.

You might also want to make sure that the 9x boxes have the Browser setting
turned off in their Network Properties pages. Don't remember exactly where
that one is...

2000 tells downline clients DHCP to register in DNS.....that is why you
really need to keep it there, for your 98 clients.

That isn't going to fix any network slowness problems and seems like a
needless step, which will be more of a headache to administer anyway.

Try troubleshooting elsewhere....

1) Make sure your DNS is set up properly (all servers and workstations
should specify *only* the internal AD-integrated DNS server's IP address in
their network settings. The AD-integrated DNS server should be set up with
forwarders to your ISP's DNS servers for external resolution. )
2) Make sure nobody (client or server) is using autosene on the NICs - set
everything to a specific, matching speed/duplex setting. If you have a
managed switch, lock down the switch ports, too.
3) Any downlevel (9x/ME) clients? Use WINS, and set up DNS to lookup to WINS
as well to keep NetBIOS broadcast at a minimum
