Dear Ladies, Gentlemen,

Could you please help me out of this, I'm desparate: I'm
facing a SBS2000 at a customer's site from which the
customer accidentally has deleted a logical drive via Disk
Manager. Since then the system has been put on "don't
touch" which means nothing has been done in the meantime:
no repartitioning, nos saves, no formatting, no nothing.
The data that have been lost with the deletion are vital.
I have been trying to solve the problem since yesterday
but couldn't find my way out. I would be very grateful if
someone could give me some advice!!!

Many thanks in advance,
Best regards,
Dave Allen

They don't have a backup tape?

I was trying to look on the bright side. I think that once the partition is
gone, it's gone. Will the ERD restore the partitions? And even if it does,
will the data still be there?

I wish I had a better answer, but I would think that if anything ever
justified a call to MS, this is it.

Hi Dave,

Thank you for using Microsoft Technical Support Newsgroups.

There are several 3rd party "undelete" utilities available which should
recover the data. A web search on "undelete and partition and utility"
should give you the results you need to compare products and make an
informed decision on which utility would best suit your needs.

Once again, thank you for using the newsgroups.

Hi Gary,

Thanx for replying. Yes they do have a backup tape, but
guess what: they just went through a small merger and
pumped in the data from the merged company om last
Thursday. The last backup they presented me dated from
Saturday a week ago, so a couple of days before the
merger. So, yes... they complied to the rules we gave
them, only the timing is quite right... you know customers.

Best regards,
Dave Allen

Dear Gary,

Yes I think you did...:-) ERD won't restore and I saw
Susan mentioning Partition Magic from PowerQuest...
Well... these are the traditional 'methods' which we tried
before starting the yelling of course. The system involved
is a server running HW Raid 5, and neither Partition Magic
nor Volume Manager seem to recognize HW Raid 5 partitions.
So, these ones went down the drain pretty early already...
But I remember from one of the Microsoft courses that
there was a way out. The only problem is that this was
mentioned on one of these Windows 2000 Server courses
somewhere in the middle-ages... ;-) That means that I (or
better our customer) am still looking for a magic trick
before going into repartioning and loosing all potential
solution.

Best regards,
Dave Allen

RE: I'm trying to undelete a logical drive by Dave

Dave

Hi David,

Thanx for replying!! Well... we have been trying a variety
of undelete utilities, but none was successful. The
problem is not that simple either. The deleted partition
we are speaking about was created on a dynamic RAID 5
disk. On that drive three partitions were created and the
third one was deleted accidentally. As you can guess from
the configuration, the deleted logical drive was not a
system drive but just data one. Now most of these undelete
tools would tackle MBR but none would LDM, the one that
goes with NTFS and dynamic disk. I have heard that
Microsoft Support has got a tool that does just what we
need; the problem is finding it. We have been looking on
the entire TechNet site and MSDN as well, but till the
present moment we didn't find any good. So, if you could
give us a hint, we would be more than grateful!!!

Best regards,

Dave Allen

PS: I have been trying to send you this reply by regular
Outlook mail but the system throws me back that this
address (dabutler@online.microsoft.com) is not know...???
Is that possible David ?

Hi Susan,

Thanx for replying. I asked someone here to investigate on
these software packages. But... couple of months ago I
heard from an instructor at one of these Microsoft MCSD
courses that Microsoft has got an easy-peasy-for-free tool
that does just what we need here (someone here mentioned
it too). Do you know perhaps where we can get this tool??
I have been phoning almost everyone at Microsoft, except
Bill Gates and Steve Balmer...:-), but at present no one
could give me a clue.

We will check on this for you and if there is we will post back.

What you have to realize is a lot of stuff that is said/done at a lot of MS
events is just not so. Even though they are M$, one of what 40k? they are
human like the rest of us and can not know everything about everything.

We focus on SBS and see tons of misinformation :)

Hi Mike,

Thanx for your hint. We are running a test with that
product and I must say that it looks good, but we didn't
finish the job yet. First of all, when running the
recovery, pretty soon we discovered that you need a lot of
memory to prevent the program from hanging at one stage
(we're at 4Gb for the moment). Then, we had to increase
the pagefile.sys to 25Gb (we're recovering a volume of
480Gb). Still, under these circumstances, the program will
become unworkably slow as from +/- 2700000 found items.
Hence, recovery should be done in chunks of approx.
50000000 sectors per job. We still are in the recovering
phase as it takes mountains of time to get through each
job, but... it seems to work. The only thing we'll have to
verify is whether we didn't loose files by splitting the
recovery into approx. 20 separate jobs. I'll keep you up-
to-date.

Best regards,
Dave

Hello Mike,

As promised, we would come back with the result of our
tests with Files Scavenger from Quetek. We almost
completely recovered all the folders and files that were
lost in the delete adventure from EDP Mister X at one of
our customers, that is 480Gb!! It took 7 days 24/24 to get
the job done. The guy jumped a hole in the sky as his job
was on the brink!!

The product looks quite good, but asks for a tremendous
amount of memory (we installed 24Gb to proceed reasonably)
and the pagefile should be 'consistent'... 25Gb in our
case. To prevent the process to become inhumanly slow, the
recovery job had to be split into 46 different sub-jobs
and even then a recovery would have even Ghandi get
nervous... Approximately 5% of the recovered files looked
like OK, but were not readable anymore, so 5% actually
failed. So thanx again Mike, speaking about a hint: this
was one, definitely!!!

Best regards,
Dave Allen
