Thank you to all
Just a quick note to everyone who gave me advice on
getting our servers up and running, first ever SBS
installation. It is a great feeling getting them up and
running and being used even though they are not working
100 % yet but are getting the job done at the moment.

Printing in Terminal Services & Group Policy
Win 2k TS and SBS 2k. 2 printers are directly on network.
4 other shared printers attached to various local
workstations. Everyone uses RDC to connect to TS but I am
having problems understanding printing from within a
Terminal Services session. None of the printers are
attached to the TS or SBS.
Do I need to install all the printers on the TS for users
to be able to use them ? or just the printer drivers ?
Do I need to use the Add Printer wizard, when each of the
users logs into a TS session in order for them to use a
particular printer ? or is there any way of making all of
the printers available to all users without having to go
thru the wizard for each users TS session ?
With regards using Group Policy on the SBS to lock down a
TS session, I know I must create an OU but would I
include all computers and users in this OU or just the TS
or just the users ? Possibly a misunderstanding of Group
Policy on my part.
Thanks in advance.

FTP through ISA
When attempting to download (via FTP) a file from a website using IE (on a
client that does not have the firewall client installed) the following
things happen:
1) Doesn't work: Click the link (such as
ftp://ftp.mysite.com/myfolder/mysubfolder/myfile.zip) from a web page
results in a page that says:
ISA Server: extended error message :
200 Type set to I.
200 PORT Command successful.
550 Permission denied.
2) Doesn't work: Right-click>Save Target As... results in a message box that
says:
Internet Explorer cannot download myfile.zip from ftp.mysite.com.
Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested
site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.
3) Works: Typing ftp://ftp.mysite.com/myfolder/mysubfolder into the address
bar will display myfile.zip which can then be double-clicked or
right-click>Copy To Folder...
Any ideas?

Distribution List and Outlook 2003
I have a customer with SBS2000. I created some new distribution lists in the
GAL. Everyone can see the new distribution listx except for the boss. And
the only difference that I can see is that his computer (laptop) is running
Office 2003, while everyone else is running Outlook 2000/2002/XP.
Any ideas? I will be going to Slipstick in a moment.

Some emails not reaching new user; other user cannot open one email
Hello,
Two odd things that are troubling me, that I don't know how to troubleshoot:
Small Business Server 2000, Exchange Service Pack 3
1) I set up a new user, User1. More than one person says that they sent
User1 an email but the user did not get it. Most mail does through. I
tracked a message that did not get through by its message ID, in the daily
log in the company.log directory. The log recorded that it got delivered,
but it never appeared in User1's mailbox.
I then set up another new account, User2, and I specify in Delivery Options
of User1 to forward all mail to User2.
A few days later, User2 is not receiving some emails. However, emails that
were sent to User1 but never received, finally get delivered to User2 (and
possibly User1 as well), a week later.
2) I noticed that I cannot open a specific email in my mailbox. It's over a
year old. I click on it and nothing happens. I try to open it via OWA,
and I get an HTTP 403 (Forbidden) You are not authorized to view this page.
I do have administrator rights.
There's nothing too unusual in the log files. Lots of Symantec Mail
Security stopping Novarg/MyDoom. Occasionally we get Warnings (not Errors)
that two objects in the directory have the same proxy.
This is scaring me, does anyone know what's up?
Many thanks,

Reboot and First Logon takes over 30 minutes
My SBS 2000 Server has developed an issue where by if I
reboot the server it takes about 20 minutes to get to the
point of displaying a log on screen and then takes about
15 minutes to actually work through to the desktop of the
logging on user. The user is using roaming profiles, but
the profile size is only about 1MB and is stored on the
server. This is far longer than it used to take a week or
so ago.
If I look through the event log the System log shows a
gap (lack of entries) for the 15 minutes or so whilst the
logon is being processed. The Application log however,
shows several Userenv errors with Event ID 1000 stating
that:
Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your
computer network. Return value (2102).
I have also had a problem were my machine was unable to
access the Internet (via our ADSL router) although it
could ping other machines on this side of the router and
the router IP address itself, it could not ping any
hostname or IP address on the far side of the router.
Once the server has finished logging on the user it
performs fairly normally. This was resolved by restarting
the server. Everything else I tried made no difference.
There have also been problems of Terminal Service clients
unable to connect today even though all seems well. Also
the Performance Logs and Alerts service and the SNMP
Service both fail to start. The Performance Logs and
Alerts service starts if you try to start it but then
when you refresh the service list it shows it as not
started again. No error message is seen. The SNMP Service
returns an error:
Could not start the SNMP Service service on Local
Computer. The service did not return an error. This could
be an internal Windows error an internal service error.
If the problem persists, contact your system
administrator.
Sorry if this is a lot of information to take in and
consider but it has all started happening in the last two
days and so would suggest that to some degree it may all
be related.
Thank you in advance for any help, comments or
suggestions you may be able to make.

VPN configuration
Hi again,
I've just read & worked through the excellent
post from Jeff. If anyone else has, i'd appreciate some
help! The RRAS has been set up properly with a static
pool on a different Subnet from the LAN DHCP clients. It
doesn't matter that the Remote Client can browse the
Internet - just Network shares are ok! Now when the
remote client VPN's they get authenticated & connected
but can't see anything at all. Using the Route Print
shows that the VPN client routes to the Static Pool I
configured through the RRAS. The Server and any clients
on the LAN do respond to a ping. No need to enter WINS
address (Win XP Pro clien) & Servers IP address is
entered as DNS Server. Any suggestions?
Cheers & Thanks

remote mail recipients
We have a sbs2000 server, and our mail is hosted by our ISP outside our
office. I am running exchange server for users to share outlook etc, and
ISA for internet connections.
Our local domain is wskfarch.local and our internet domain is wskfarch.com.
When the client computers check e-mail they check the pop server my ISP
hosts. They also check an exchange account here locally for local mail.
When they send e-mail to xxxx@wskfarch.com , the exchange server
automatically routes it the the exchange mailbox instead of our ISP's
mailbox. This is good for all but the 2 people that travel. Also when
someone sends an 'everyone' email to the WSKFARCH group in 'global contacts'
the traveling computers can't get it, because it resides locally.
Is there a way to re-direct the global address to actually send mail out
instead of keeping it local on the exchange server? Or, is there a way to
autoforward in exchange?
I have looked in the help and read on other forums, but haven't found the
answer yet.
Thanks.

VPN Client Browsing
Hi everyone,
Have a client in a remote office - O/S Win XP

after reading Kb 320697 & making Regedits in Kb 292822.
Remote client VPN connection IPconfig /all shows it to
resolve DNS & Wins to the SBS box. Can also ping &
receive reply. The problem now is that they can't share
network resources. The machine is a clean install &
hasn't been joined to the SBS network apart from the VPN
connection. It's connected to the Internet via a USB ADSL
modem. I've tried the UNC, Web Browser & also tried to
register it as a WINS client (as suggested in the ISA VPN
deployment guide) registering it as a WINS client failed,
but is this required if all machines are XP Pro?

Problems with isa
I was wondering if anyone could help?
At a clients site, they are having a strange problem with isa.
Set up is win xp clients, w2ksbs server running isa, all clients as firewall
client.
2-3 of the users have a problem whereby when they first open internet
explorer, they get a page saying page not found, if they hit refresh all is
fine. This can happen at any time during the day, even if other people can
browse the net with no problems, and it seems to be just these 2-3 users. if
they close ie and re open it the same things happen.
The settings for all users are identical, using isa as a proxy etc.
anyone got any ideas?

Exchange calendar/contacts alongside a pop3 account
Hello,
hopefully someone will be able to help or suggest something to help me out.
We have been recently bought out by a larger company who have taken over our
domain and email. Previously the email fed directly to exchange, but now it
is pop3 based.
Exchange has been removed (but still have sbs2000 running - therefore
exchange licening still ok). I was wondering about reloading exchange to
manage/share clandars, contacts, etc. We seem to have los a lot of
functionality with the change (we don't even have a 'staff' email list
anymore.
My question is..... Can exchange be accessed from outlook, along with mail
gathered from pop3 accounts (without a 'global' email address). I just want
staff to have the tools they had before.

Firewall
Sorry for such a stupid question but here goes anyway.
I thought the point of having the firewall client
installed on pc's connected to the SBS with ISA was as
follows.
1 - So that any rules etc configured in ISA would be
adhered to when a user accesed the outside world.
2 -I also thought that if they disabled the firewall
client then their usage would not show in ISA logs (But
now know this not to be the case, why is this can anyone
explain for me).

Remote Desktop Web Connection
Is this by default using VPN?
Working on a Windows 2003 Server and don't know what I am doing *yet*.
Trying to figure out whether VPN is configured and being used.
RAS is installed, but the IP is set to DHCP, and there is *not* a DHCP
server on the network. I also used RDWC to access the server and did
not see an active connection in the RAS settings. So I must conclude
that when the enduser uses RDWC via the web browser this is not a VPN
connection and I assume this is not secure?

Helpful links give errors on SBS Console
Hi,
I have found a similar post to this from back in January but the
outcome was not posted. I have an SBS 2000 Server (recently installed)
and I'm having problems with the HMTL component of the SBS Console,
specifically in the Backoffice Manager section where the Helpful Links
are listed down the right hand side of the counter page. None of the
links work (they give errors about files not being found) and the
image at the bottom is missing.
I've followed technet articles to reinstall the console and to
manually replace the console but they have made no difference. I've
tried the server with or without SP1a for SBS, still not luck.
Does anyone have the solution to this?
Thanks in advance.

Removing Router from Network?
I'm writing about an SBS 2000 server which is having slow VPN connection
speeds and am considering a hardware change. I have written about my
problems earlier (VPN Sloooow). Although I received good feedback I haven't
seen any improvement in speeds. I'd like any suggestions on whether the
hardware change will improve the speed and how to implement the change.
The current network is using a 192K SDSL connection. (When we originally
set up the network we had ADSL on a Verizon line with no static IP. That's
why we installed the router.)
DSL WAN: 155.x.x.x
DSL LAN: 216.x.x.111
Linksys WAN: 216.x.x.112
Linksys LAN: 192.168.16.99
SBS WAN: 192.168.16.1
SBS LAN: 192.168.1.2
I am considering removing the Linksys router, putting the SBS server on the
'net'. The Linksys is the BEFSX41. Given the slow speeds of the VPN we are
currently having, I'm wondering if the router is causing the problems. The
ISP tech said that this could be causing the problem.
Questions:
- Can anyone confirm or reject my suspicions about the router? Is it likely
that removing it will speed up the VPN traffic?
- Would the SBS server be safe with a public address? I'm feeling a bit
cautious here. We have ISA. Is that enough?
- If we go ahead with the change, how should I reconfigure the server with
the new address?

ISA removal from SBS2000
Hi there.
Is it possible to later remove ISA server 2000 from a productive

for security reasons and i'd like to get rid of the ISA overhead on SBS.
Also the "external" network card should be removed and the SBS2000 should

What is the best-practive and are there experiences?

Footprints on the disk
Computer-derived evidence has become a feature
of court proceedings. Ed Halliwell spoke to an expert
whose job it is to interpret the findings for a jury.
Provisions for computer-derived evidence have been
part of English law since 1968, but it was not until
last year that the potential impact of information
technology on court proceedings became widely apparent.

Great Taste, Less Privacy
A patron walks into a bar and orders a drink.
The bartender asks to see some ID. Without asking
permission, the barkeep swipes the driver's license
through a card reader and the device flashes a green
light approving the order. The bartender is just
verifying the card isn't a fake, right? Yes, and
perhaps more.

We couldn't let this go by without a bit of a tech note on the Superbowl:
On Monday, TiVo said the exposure of Jackson's breast during her
halftime performance was the most-watched moment to date on its device,
which, when combined with the TiVo subscription service, lets viewers
pause and "rewind" live television broadcasts, among other features.
From the CNN Next program:
SIEBERG: Okay. Everybody else has been talking about it, now it's our
turn. That's right. It's the boob tube incident during the Super Bowl
half-time show. What's the technology angle to this? Well, TiVo, the
company that makes those popular digital video recorders said viewership
striked up to 180 percent at the moment that Janet Jackson's wardrobe
malfunction. Viewers used TiVo's ability to rewind live TV to view the
infamous moment over and over and over again.
TiVo watchers uneasy after post-Super Bowl reports
Janet Jackson's Super Bowl flash dance was shocking
in more ways than one: Some TiVo users say the event
brought home the realization that their beloved
digital video recorders are watching them, too.

Receiving mail
Hi
We have an SBS2000 connected by dial up to an ISP. All mail that is received
is directed to my mail box. Until last week this was working fine. In
preparation for getting a broadband connection I installed a second network
card last week. Since then no mail has been coming through to my inbox.
Exchange seems to be receiving it from the ISP and deleting the messages
from the ISP server. There are no entries in the transaction message
tracking centre. There are also no NDR's.
Is there any way I can see if these messages have been received over the
last few days and can I read them?

Exchange2000 stealing all available memory
Hi,
Is there a fix to stop Ex2000 stealing all available memory yet? I
have read about problem on NG's but appears as tho MS havent found
cause and fix yet.
My current fix is to stop and start Information Store - not desireable
tho.
As more and more memory gets used clients get kicked off domain, not
good.

SBS 2000 WAN and DNS
Hi,
I have the following SBS2000 setup;
2 sites connected by 2mb link, 15 hosts using 2k pro & XP Pro.
site A has SBS server and DHCP superscope configured to serve site B
clients and all works fine apart from site B hosts not dynamically
registering with DNS. Site A no problem, i have imagined that if site
A was updating DNS ok then site B should also.
ROuters have DHCP forwading enabled (or DHCP) wouldnt work for site B,
is there something i have missed?
I have DNS set for SBS server first then forward to ISP.
Regards

Two Public IPs on one NIC
Hi,
Is it possible to configure two static public IP addresses for use on one
NIC? If so, is there a document on how to do this correctly? I have two
websites with different public IP addresses and only one NIC available. They
both use SSL with different certificates so I need to keep them on their own
IPs.
Thanks in advance,
Paddy. Tag: test Tag: 151054
SQL Installation DESPERATE
I have a fully licenced SBS2k server.
As with the last posting from John i have been a little
Lax about where i have left CD sleeves after use.
I now want to install SQL2k from CD2 but when i try to do
so i am asked for a product key.
Couple of quick questions if i may.
Is this the Win2k SBS product key i am being asked for and
if so how do i find it i tried looking in the registry
under HKLM/Software/Mirc/Windows/CurrentVersion/
This is where the product key is for a normal PC install,
however i cant seem to find the SBS prod key there it
merely shows an OEM install code.
How do i find the SQL product key? Tag: test Tag: 151050
