as this ng suggested me some weeks ago, I removed raspppoe from my sbs
server, I bought a router that supports pppoe protocol, and I connected it
to the second nic of the machine, run ICW and everything worked fine.....
All the configuration of the router (ip, username, password) has been made
using the software provided with the router, but if I want to set port
forwarding (ie to connect remotely to my server) I have to open a telnet
session to the router.....but when I digit from the prompt "telnet
192.168.1.254" (the router's ip), after about a minute I receive an error
"unable to open a connection to host....". I tried to start manually the
telnet service on the sbs2000 box, but nothing changed......
I'm sure the router works correctly, since if I connect it temporarily to a
win xp notebook (with the only nic configured as the server's secondary),
I'm able to open the telnet session.....but I'd like to work with the router
connected to SBS.....
can you help me???
thnx
bye

Create a packet filter for Telnet.

Hi,

In the SBS server you will have to create the proper ISA packet filter to
allow the Outbound communication on port TCP/23 (the default port used by
Telnet). You do not need the Telnet service running.

1. In the ISA Server management tool, expand the management nodes that
are beneath your server name.

2. Expand the Access Policy branch to view the list of access policies.

3. Right-click IP Packet Filters, point to New, and then click Filter
to start the New IP Packet Filter Wizard.

4. Type a descriptive name for the filter (such as "Telnet Out"
(without the quotation marks)), and then click Next.

5. Click Allow packet transmission as the Filter Mode, and then click
Next.

6. Click Custom as the filter type, and then click Next.

7. On the Filter Settings page, click TCP for the IP protocol, click
"Outbound" for the direction, "All ports" as the local port, click
"Fixed port" as the remote port, use port 23 as the remote port
number, and then click Next.

8. Keep the default settings by clicking Next through the next two
wizard pages, and then click Finish at the Completing The New IP Packet
Filter Wizard page.

Regards,

Damian

Hi Davide,

Surely the router has a web interface you can access via IE (at it's lan
side IP). Telnet - ugh!.

Anyway, if you are happy with the telnet interface, try this:

telnet 192.168.1.254 23

Note the space 23 at the end. You must specifically go over that port.

Have a look in the router documentation and see if it's got a web
configuration page running on some port, then you can use a browser and go
http://192.168.1.254:xxxx where xxxx is the port.

Davide,

If the ultimate goal is to access your server remotely,
then why are you not creating a VPN connection to the
server and running Terminal services client on your remote
desktop?
