CRN : Daily Archives : Microsoft Extends Paid Support On Windows 98

I'm sorry but I don't think this is a good decision at all.

On the one hand they do the right thing and take out TS in application
mode on our domain controllers, and then on the other hand they continue
to support Win98.

Makes it a little hard for me to stand up here and say "Microsoft gets
security" when they will continue to support a platform that has none
until Longhorn comes out.

I for one am disappointed that they caved in to customer response.

I think that they didn't realize the number of folks who still use
Win98..who don't want to move to XPs bloat ware..

I still have a copy of Windows 1 in my draw. I wonder if I can get
support on that??

I prefer 2000. Friends hate me, I sit down at their XP machine and the first
thing I do is turn off all the eye candy. Of course, a few days later they
comment 'my PC's heaps faster than before you looked at it'. Business
clients I have to ask nicely.

Have to disagree with you here. XP Pro runs great and has many features that
make it well worth purchasing! !

I will be glad when I have gotten rid of the last 98 mancine in my office!
It's a heck of a lot easier to manage XP Pro machines remotely then to have
to go to every workstation with 98 still onboard!

Now on the other hand, for my kids at home on a couple of older machines -
no problem. Does everything they need.

I don't remember Windows 1.

A company I worked for had (I think) Windows 2 betas, but it may have been
Windows /286.

Windows /286 (which I may be able to find if I look hard)
Windows /386 (which I know is here somewhere)

I never had Windows 3, only Windows for Workgroups (3.11) and I can reach
the installations floppies from where I am now sitting, but there's a lot of
dust on the box.

I still carry CD's with Win95 and Win95b on them in my standard kit, but I
definitely haven't used them this year and think the 95b had an error on it
(scratch/fade) the one time I attempted to use it last year. NOTE: If the CD
from the OS you are using has faded to the point where it errors it's
probably time to upgrade. My mate Jan had to use 95 the other day, I'm still
giggling.

HECK, I only upgraded mum to '98se last year. Suits her purposes fine. Mum's
not real happy about all the new fangled thingamebobs in Office 97 though.

As we upgrade offices to SBS2K3 we are going to PUSH REAL HARD for those NT4
boxes to be retired, but it's not going to work everywhere. I installed
NT4ws onto 4 new boxes for a client not many weeks ago. He has a Standard
Operating Environment and will shortly upgrade that SOE to _possibly_ remove
the NT Servers and allow us to put his 2K Advanced Server into native mode
and XP across the board as clients. We don't actually have many NT4's out
there but where they are there is a good reason, mostly.

Although NT4 boxes may be hard to maintain (can't use GPOs and so on), I'd
be perfectly happy if people ran XP/W2k/NT4-only networks. It's the aging
and unreliable Win9x boxes that drive me up the wall... :-)

I always liked NT4. After about SP3 it was as solid as a rock, and if you
install it on a modern box it usually feels *extremely* quick compared to
W2k/XP/WS2003 on the same machine...

Well, 'Me' is the biggest disaster to ever come from Microsoft in my
opinion. It even surpases "Bob" in depth of bad software. That said, the one
upside to 98 and Me is that nobody even bothers to write viruses or worms to
attach these machines anymore. All the latest badies have specifically
targeted 2000 and XP machines.

Just as long as they aren't in my Domain.....=P

A bit of history about why I still have .t.

Back in 1987 the telco that I worked for set up a remote maint center
and the hub of this was a Wang PC. A supper fast (at the time ) 286.
THis came with Windows 1 and Office 1. After it was retired it was
put in a back room and was bought out when the engineering grads came
out of university with Windows 98 this and Windows NT that . The
oldest that they had seen was screen shots of Windows 3.1. We were
able to show them that there was life before Windows 3.1 and it still
works..
