    - SBS2003 and DSL Modems. First off, Thanks for reading this post. Iâ??m a bit new to what Iâ??m trying to do in this post, so if this sounds a bit simple to some, please pass anything you can along to me. I am trying to get SBS2003 to play well with a DSL Modem/Router. The Server has an inside and outside NIC card. We attempted to get a connection to the Internet two ways. #1, Connect the DSL Modem to the outside NIC, turn off the router functions, and let SBS2003 handle all of the connection information. User Name, Password and so on. The Modem dials out, but the IP address coming back from the modem is not the static number that we have. Tried several modems from the DSL provider, but the problem is between SBS2003 and the DSL Modem. Unfortunately the DSL provided will not allow â??Otherâ?? brands of modems so we are stuck. This modem will simply not pass on the Static IP address that is ours, and provides a phantom address, which renders this useless in this configuration. So seeing that this will not work, no matter what we try, we moved to connection #2. #2, Connect the DSL Modem to the network switch, turn ON the router functions, and let the Modem/Router handle all connection information, Username, Password and so on. Making sure the Server now knows the Internet Gateway is the router that is on the switch. This works fine, but we can not provide for most of the needed functions of SBS2003 from the outside world. The most we get is Internet to all of the machines. Remote Access, Remote Mail, Remote Desktop among other things simply will not work with this configuration. We know this. And connecting this configuration to the outside NIC also does not work since the Server and the Router functions fight with each other and the Static IP again is not passed to the server. But the odd thing, the STATIC IP address is showing in this configuration but will not pass off to the server no matter what we try with Configuration #1 or #2. This sent us in many directions, and our final thought was to try what we are trying now. I will give a bunch of fake IP numbers just to show what directions we are moving in right now. We have connected the DSL Modem to a Linksys Router BEFSR41. In the router, DHCP is turned off, and it is given an IP of 192.168.30.1 We have also programmed in the static IP address given by the Modem. The Linksys router is then connected to the server through its outside NIC with an IP address of 192.168.30.2 All pertinent Gateway, Subnet and DNS information is programmed into the Linksys Router as well. The outside NIC on the server is then given the IP of 192.168.30.2, Subnet of 255.255.255.0, Gateway of 192.168.30.1 (the Linksys Router) and the DNS of the router 192.168.30.1 And finally, the DMZ of the Linksys Router is turned on for the IP address of the Outside NIC of the server. (192.168.30.2) In theory, what we think should have happened was to basically get by the DSL Modem Problem by making the DSL Modem and the LinkSys Router one big Cable Modem that just hands over to the server a Static IP address (192.168.30.1) from the router, and make it think itâ??s the outside one and let the router deal with the DSL Modem problem on not handing off our Real static IP address. This works, for about 90% of what we need. We are able to connect to our serverâ??s remote sites, (http://remote.whatever.com/remote) and we are able to check mail, and most of the other functions of the remote area, but we are unable to connect to a remote desktop at all. When we choose this selection, it sends us the certificate to allow us to get into the remote area. Then it displays the lists of machines on the network. When we click on one of the machine to remotely work on that machine, it does nothing until it ultimately times out. I know this is a long shot, but has anyone else ever had problems with DSL like we have and connecting DSL with SBS2003, or have ever tried what we are trying. It seems for the most part we are on the right path since we have more and more things that we are able to do, but there is something missing that we canâ??t quite figure out that might be on the Server end or the Modem/Linksys end, and we are now stumped. We canâ??t figure out why SBS2003 will not work with DSL Cable Modems, and we have also found that there are many people who have the same problems when trying to let SBS2003 do the dialing, login and password functions of the DSL Modem. So we have tried other routes as I have said, with great results but can not get there 100%. Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on our problem. I know this is not something that everyone would or should try, but we are trying to keep things as secure as possibly and still have our remote access with this stubborn DSL Modem and Company.     - Quick Explanation? I'm considering Small Business Server 200X for our office. Back in the day, when NT 4.0 was the thing to run, there were two types of licensing - per server and per seat. How does microsoft currently license their server technology? I have an office with 7 people, potentially 11 more VPN'ing in to join the network.     - Stopping Exchange and SQL before backup I need to delete and re-create an array on my SBS 2k server which contains the system volume, as well as SQL and part of Exchange (not MDBDATA). I intend to do a core OS install, followed by full restore from tape (Backup Exec 8.5 for SBS). If I stop Exchange and SQl services before I run a backup, could I restore Exchange and SQl from full file copies of their directories when I'm doing the primary OS restore from tape? Exchange and SQL would not even exist yet on any drives as part of the core OS install. It doesn't seem as though log files would be an issue that way (they are not even on the array being re-created). Perhaps I'd have to change the Exchange or SQL startup types. I'm not in disaster recovery mode and have some leeway. I could use the Backup Exec agents for Exchange and SQL (and do have backups), but I would like to minimize the efforts required.     - Failed Drive Running SBS 2000 on a Compaq Proliant. We had the boot drive fail, it was being mirrored. The boot drive is not bootable and returns an error message of imminent failure.     - Ghost SBS2k system partition ? One of the SBS2k disaster recovery whitepapers mentions ghosting the SBS2k system partition as a means of backup. Is this a supported option? If so, what's a suitable application and version to do that? I need to change the raid array that contains the system volume from raid 0 to raid 1, and will have to recreate the array to do so.     - messages get stuck in the Hi, I am using Windows SBS 2000 and intermittently, messages get stuck in the Exchange SmallBusiness SMTP connector queue. Though recipients to whom messages are sent seem to be random, the problem occurs most often when sending to aol recipients and seem to occur whenever sent to one specific aol recipient. The messages show a status of retry, with no other information listed in the status field. Any assistance or direction with this matter is greatly appreciated.     - upgrade question I'm close to migrating from a SBS2000 domain to a full Windows 2003. I have had Exchange 2003 and SQL 2000 running on different boxes for awhile now. I use a Cisco PIX as my firewall. I don't want to go to SBS2003. After moving some final data/components off of the SBS2000 machine/domain controller - and a few other tasks - I need to retire the SBS2000 machine. My plan is the following and I have a few questions that I'd appreciate any help with: 1) Remove an existing Windows 2000 DC from the network - as a "DC in the closet" fallback option 2) Install a Windows 2003 machine and promote it to a DC in the SBS 2000 domain. Also setup DNS on this machine and make it a GC. 3) Shutdown the SBS2000 machine and use ntdsutil to seize all FSMO roles to the Windows 2003 DC. Q: Would this be the recommended method for getting rid of the SBS2000 machine? Q: Should I dcpromo it then shut it down (if it even can be dcpromo'd) or just shut it down and remove it from the network? 4) Use ntdsutil to clean up metadata that refers to the former SBS2000 machine. Remove references to the old server from DNS. Q: What would be the best method for doing the DNS cleanup? * After the above steps I hope to have the same domain but with the SBS2000 box removed and the domain now running as a full Windows 2003 domain.     - cannot log into computer, exchange down, dns issues Hi, We are experiencing some major problems with our sbs2k server: After typing in the domain admin user/pass at the login prompt, the prompt disappears leaving a light blue screen. The computer stays at this screen and will remain unresponsive until the power is switched off manually. Before turning it off, we are able to access the shared folders on it (although slow), terminal server sessions open, but remain black (dead) and backup jobs will run, although they will not fully complete. Exchange is down. After the server is turned back on, it runs normally again, until the issue recurs, which is usually the following morning. While the computer is running, I have been examining the event logs and I have discovered the following: at seemingly random times, we get three instances of DNS error event id 4004, and 5 minutes later, followed by recurring instances of DNS error event id 4000, every 5 minutes. The three instances of event 4004 relate to "enumeration of zone ..", "enumeration of zone 0.168.192.in-addr.arpa", "enumeration of zone <ourdomain>.local". We have verified and re-verified our DNS settings, and tried every solution we could find. We even performed an authoritative restore on AD on the sbs2k server and a non-authoritative restore on the file server.     - Exchange Update - KB894689, fails Hi, SBS 2000, up to date bar the Subj KB (Exchange 2000 SP whatever (3 I think)). I installed via Microsoft Update initially. The Exchange update failed w' the following message: store.exe EntryPoint Not Found The procedure entry point FSetCallTracingCallbacks could not be located in the dynamic link library EXOSAL.DLL I used stopped IIS Admin and then removed the KB via Add/Remove Programs. Rebooted. Downloaded the update manually. Stopped IIS Admin and Exchange System Attendant. Re-applied the update. No error message this time until I rebooted, whereupon I got the same error. I have removed the update now - and all is well - bar I don't have the Exchange critical update installed - which is of some concern. This is all on my testbed machine.     - Internet Mail Lost Hi, Sorry I first sent this message to the Exchange User Group with no response. Please help. I had to restore Active Directory on my client's SBS 2000 server. Now all Internet mail being sent or received is being lost. There are no errors messages in the event log or in users e-mail boxes. I have reviewed all the connectors and they appear to be okay.     - SBS/Exchange 2000 managing multiple domains Using the SBS 2000 pop3 collector with Exchange 2000. Have a default policy which states: (mailnickname=*) SMTP @domain3.co.uk (responsible for all) SMTP @domain3.local (responsible for all) SMTP @domain2.co.uk (responsible for all) SMTP @domain2.local (responsible for all) SMTP @domain1.co.uk (type=checked, primary, (responsible for all)) SMTP @domain1.local (type=checked, (responsible for all)) X400 c=GB;a= ;p=DOMAIN1;o=Exchange; The pop3 collector collects mail for all the .co.uk addresses no problem. Certain users have domain1.co.uk some have domain2.co.uk others domain3.co.uk and a few have multiples. It seems like pg.co.uk and pl.co.uk are simply being lost. The pop3 collector collects but the mail does not appear in the mailbox. i.e. i get mail to my domain1.co.uk but not domain2.co.uk or domain3.co.uk It did all use to work when the SBS server's IP was allowed to relay. However this caused Exchange to resend (well try to resend) incoming mail to other external recipients like the pop3 catch all bug. I'm certainly going to be glad when I can ditch this pop3 collector but its a couple of months away :S I've tried re-adding the domains above, and even checked the type box which I believe is unessecary. Also if sending a mail from internal to a valid address at domain2.co.uk or domain3.co.uk the exchange server delivers it. If sent to an invalid address at those domains the exchange server pushes it out to our host's smtp server which then bounces back an ndr (as there is no such pop3 box). Solutions?     - SBS 2000 Trashed For some reason, my SBS 2000 server is in bad shape. I cannot do an upgrade to SP4 I cant do an Windows update from the web. I am going to put SBS2003 on a new box, but my question is: what would happen if I installed Windows 2000 Server over the SBS 2000, just so I could do a migration. I have a legit copy of Windows 2000 server so that would not be an issue. What happens to the other elements in SBS like Exchang, IIS and SQL. Any assitance would be appreciated.     - POP3 mailbox not accepting updated passwords I have a user whose computer crashed and they've now been updated from W2K Pro to XP Pro. (That in itself was a nightmare but we'll leave that for another day). The user name has also been changed from firstnamesurname to firstname for this particular user. The user is able to logon to the network on the XP machine with firstname/password without problem. When the user tries to poll his mailbox, it is rejected as bad user/password. I've telnetted to the pop3 server and tried to logon using his name and password and receive the same result. I'm stuck as to what to do. The user has mails arriving as we speak and cannot access them. I was under the understanding that changing the password (reset password on user in Acive Directory) also changed the pop3 logon passwords. If it does (or is supposed to) it isn't happening. I don't know where to install the Terminal Server Licensing component - should it be on the sbs server or on the win2k3 server?     - POP3 not recognising new password Power user managed to crash and burn the W2k machine he was using. installed XP Pro sp2 onto the machine as a new install and reloaded all the progs so he could keep his data. I've changed the logon name for this user from firstnamesurname to firstname. I've reset the password and he can logon to the domain with no problem from his machine and remotely via VPN. However.... He cannot access his mailbox. POP3 produces the "unknown user/bad password" routine. Even telnetting to the server and explicitly entering his new logon and password fails to gain access. I have two questions: 1) why isn't pop3 recognising the new password? (I've restarted all exchange services) 2) If I have to create a new box for him, how do I get the messages already in his box transferred to the new box?     - Single Exchange 2000 Mailbox Recovery We fired an employee yesterday. She wasn't happy. This morning we figured out that between her firing and being walked out the door, management had to rework the termination letter. During that few minutes she went to her desk to clean it out. Unbeknowst to us, she also deleted 200MB of her emails -- some of which were important (I know: we should have locked her out before the termination). I have full information store backups (veritas 9.1) from 7:05 am and from 12:45 pm yesterday (she was terminated at 4:30PM), so I have the data. Unfortunately, all our Exchange backups are FULL store backups, not mailbox level. For reasons too complex to go into, we immediately delete 'deleted' emails, so overnight Exchange maintenance wiped the emails and online-defrag cleaned up pretty good :) Does anyone know an easy way to recover this ex-employee's emails to her email account (or a .pst?) without having to recover the entire info store? I am not sure what this is since I dont have SQL standalone databases (ie we run QB Enterprise which uses its own variation of SQL which is QBDBMNGR.exe) In any event I found some articles online that say this memory consumption by sqlsrvr continue to grow until it uses all memory on the server up, at it also says you can place limits, my question is, HOW do you place the limits.     - Exchange reply address I have a client with two offices, both running SBS 2K. Each have been running separate domains for mail. The client would now like to utilize a single domain for email. To that end, I have set up the larger of the two offices with the new preferred domain for mail. At that same office, I have setup users which correspond to users at the smaller office. These users forward to contacts with email addresses that match those of the users at the smaller office, using its original mail domain. All seems to work fairly well, but the client would like the "reply" or "from" on emails sent from clients in the smaller office to match that of the new preferred domain name, rather than the original mail domain for that office. I tried adding the new preferred domain name to recipient policy in the smaller office and making it primary, but not authoritative. That seemed to work for outside email, but the users in the smaller office could not reply to users at the larger office. The emails were rejected because the users could not be found, I assume because the smaller office was looking within itself for those larger office addresses. It has occurred to me to try setting the default email addresses at the individual user level, rather than through recipient policy, but I am not very confident this will do much good.     - Pop3 Collector losing mail? Help! I've got several pop3 accounts being collected by the pop3 collector on SBS2000. Been set up for ages and mail works ok, except if the mail is big it seems. Been sent some 6mb mails, checked the pop3 box through a web interface to see if they are there. Waited for the pop3 collector to collect. Checked the logs which I set to maximum. It said it downloaded the mail and gave it a Message ID. However Trend Scanmail (Client Server Messenging Suite SMB) doesn't show it in its scan logs. And Exchange's Message Tracking Centre doesn't show it no matter how I search. Looked in Badmail and nothing new there, looked in the server.log directory and no mention of the message in the log there. Tried another scenario where there was a small mail and a big mail in the pop3 box at the same time. The big mail did as above, the small mail ended up in my mailbox no problems. Ideas anyone?     - Windows Update KB905915 issues Over the last 2 weeks my SBS 2000 server has been experiencing very erratic behavior. I believe I have narrowed the culprit down to windows update KB905915. I am unsure what triggers the problems to start, but the only way to get things working again is to reboot the server. Once the problems begin, following are the symptoms I notice: 1) Unable to establish new VPN connections. Pre-established VPN connections remain connected and operational. I am able to create a new RDP connection from a workstation to the server. However, when I try to logoff from this remote connection I experience issue #5 detailed below. 2) Unable to use Internet Explorer on server. Screen just hangs with a blank white page. Client workstations can still browse internet OK. 3) Server will not answer any new incoming faxes. On two occasions I noticed the inbox had a fax "in progress". I tried to cancel the fax but then the status just hung at â??deletingâ??. I tried stopping and restarting the Microsoft shared fax service. The service stopped, but then gave the following message when trying to restart: â??Could not start the Microsoft shared fax service on local computer. The service did not return an error. This could be an internal windows error, or an internal system error.â?? Possibly this is the trigger that causes the server problems to begin. The fax service has a dependency on the RPC service. 4) I use the POP3 mail connector in Exchange to retrieve my e-mail. When the problems occur, no new POP3 mail is retrieved. However no error messages are written to the event logs. 5) When I attempt to logoff or reboot the server to correct the issue, it just hangs at the "saving your settings" window. I have let it sit here for over Â½ hour. The only way to reboot is to push the power button. 6) There are no relevant entries written to any event log indicating what the cause could be. I have now uninstalled this windows update about 4 days ago. Since then the problem has yet to occur again. The fax activity has been very low over the holiday weekend though, so time will tell if the problem is fixed for good. I would like to find out if anybody else has experienced similar issues with this update. Is there any fix available yet to get the update installed without causing a problem?     - Trend SMB 3.0 Issues I have contacted Trend support but do not have an answer yet - wondered if anyone else had similar issues-resolutions. SBS2003-ISA2000. Installed a new copy of SMB3.0. Problem Description : Having lots of issues after installing 3.0 Among issues: (1)Clients are not getting updates from the main server - though it is getting updates. (2)Clients are added through the dashboard - but after installing successfully - they no longer appear under any group. (I think this is why they do not get updates) (3)Cannot reach the ScanMail center at all - Exact Error Message : "Console Session has expired" after putting in a user name and password to reach the scan mail center. Therefore I cannot configure scan mail for attachment blocking and so forth. (4) When I go to the SBS server and try to reach San Mail via start - programs to go to Real Scan Monitor - I get a 127.0.0.1:16372 HTTP 400 error Step Taken So Far : Reinstalled program twice - per Les' guide - I have uninstalled the clients manually, then added them through the dashboard. they then will have the most recent settings - but will not receive them after that. They do NOT have a firewall on the desktops turned on. Any ideas? Also (5)- I have checked all the settings in IIS - but I am having issues from XP desktops getting to the complete dashboard. Windows 2000 clients have no issues. I think there is an issue with latest Sun Java and 3.0 - but have not found reference to this. Having installed sp4, I then needed to run SBS setup for another component.

The setup failed when checking its components stating that SBS needed SQL
sp3. It clearly isn't recognising sp4. Is there a fix for this? Setup
aborted at this point and wouldn't let me continue.

Does this mean I need to roll back the sp4 to sp3 in order to make changes
to SBS setup?

There was a post in the SBS 2003 newsgroup recently about a somewhat similar
situtation. Upgrading to SBS 2003 SP1 seemed to be the answer. It appears
that SBS 2003 (pre-SP1) has a problem

I think it may have to do with SQL 2000 SP4 upgrading your MDSE instance to
