Hi

i would like to install sbs 2000 but i am having trouble
deciding how to split up my partitions.

i have got a 30gb hard disk.

i would like to have a c:\drive (5gb) and a d:\drive for
data which will take up the rest of the drive space.

Is this a good idea?

Do i need to install exchange to c:\drive? Can it be
installed on d:\drive? If so, what are the consequences?

thanks

Just my opinion: I like at least 8g for c:. Depending on the amount of ram
in the server, you probably have a pretty large page file on there, plus the
SBS software - my guess is you'll be cramped with 5g unless you are willing
to do quite a bit of management. I would install exchange and all the other
SBS components in their default locations for simplicity reasons, then move
the exchange databases into your other partition. The program files are
only a couple hundred mb's - it's the data you need the space for.

Take a look at http://www.12c4pc.com/sbs2000-1.htm &
http://www.12c4pc.com/sbs2000-2.htm where I discuss the reasons you may want
to have more than just 2 partitions. I like to keep the C drive down to
7.68Gb for compability with some older utilites.

I would venture to say, though, that 8gb is now "minimum" size for the C:
drive. My last few servers, I've set the C: partition to around 15gb. Some
of my earlier 8gb SBS2000 installs currently are using up nearly 6gb of the
8gb. Although that's OK for running day to day, it will be a different story
when I get ready to upgrade them to SBS2003.

Also, which "older" utilities won't work with root partition > 8gb? Again,
I'm running several with 10-156gb with no problems, on Raid-5 disks.

Here is what I did:

Server is setup for RAID 1+0 w/6 drives and one logical disk around 50gb

C: 8 gig - System stuff
D: cdrom
E: 2 gig - Swap file (2 gig is the recommend max, server has 2gig of
ram)
F: 512mb - ISA Cache
G: 9 gb - SQL databases
H: 10 gb - exchange (exchange is limited to a total of 15gb in SBS)
I: rest of drive - all shares and service packs.
