I have a small network (single domain). We are trying to
upgrade by replacing our current W2k server with a new box
and SBS2000. I have installed W2k server on the new box
and have joined the domain. Now, when I try to run the SBS
setup wizard, I get the above message. The suggested
solution is to remove the server from the domain, put it
in a workgroup, and continue. Will I have any problems
later when I try to place the SBS server in the domain and
replace the old server? Is there a document or site that
will help me step through this process?

Thanks

You can't join an SBS server to an existing domain (by itself).

Since you already have the soon-to-be-SBS Win2k server in the existing
domain... just transfer the FMSO roles to the new box. At that point you can
install SBS on top of the new server.

Just in case...

You will need to DCPROMO it first.

Thanks, Javier. I knew there was a problem joining to an
existing domain. Please excuse my "newbee-ness", but I'm
not sure what FMSO means. I think you are telling me that
I need to transfer the Primary Domain Controller status as
well as DHCP server, etc., to the new server, then install
SBS. Correct?

Thanks again,
Rocky

Right! That's one of the few things I do know! ;-)

there's an easier way.

You have an existing W2K DC. Install W2Ks on the new box (NOT using SBS
media) and DCPromo it into the domain. Leave it for half an hour to ensure
AD is fully replicated (or force replication).DCPromo the original box out
of domain control, this moves the FSMO roles to the eventual SBS box.
Disable DHCP & DNS on the old server. Install SBS.

You can even, if you wish, then DCPromo the old box back into a DC position.
There's not much benefit in having multiple DC's in an SBS domain but you
may have something running on the old box which requires it be a DC,
hopefully the DCPromo out/in will not break such.
