Hi Everyone,

I'm having some serious trouble here. :( I have the HP JetDirect
500x Print Server (connected to a Laserjet 2300D Printer)...and I'm
trying to set it up on the SBS2K Lan with a static IP with no success.
Here's what I've done...

Make a DHCP reservation within the scope at 192.168.16.240. I then
use that same IP address for the static IP address for the Print
Server. So my print server setup is as follows...

IP ADDRESS: 192.168.16.240
SUBNET MASK: 255.255.255.0
DEFAULT GATEWAY: 192.168.16.2

The internal IP address of the server is 192.168.16.2. So ok, then I
try to make the connection to the printer...and nothing seems to work.
What am I doing wrong???

Kindly help. I've been losing sleep trying to get the darn sucker to
work!!!

I'm not sure I understand the question, but I'm assuming when you use IE to
access the print server at 192.168.16.240, the tcp/ip settings show as you
wish. If that's the case, you go to the server and click
settings/printers/file/server properties. Click Ports, Add, and add a
tcp/ip port at that IP address. Once you have the port set up, run the add
printer wizard to add a printer at that port (choose local port, not
network). You'll need the win2k drivers for the printer.

How do I setup a Print Server w/Static IP on SBS2K LAN??? by Eugene

hi Cassie,

I think you might have confused DHCP reservation and range
of unassigned IP addr.

If you want to use a static IP addr, you need to prevent
DHCP from assigning or using that IP addr. (I usually use
low numbers like x.x.x.4 - x.x.x.10, could be high range).
Setting unassigned means DHCP won't touch that range of
numbers - and you'll usually want to do that if a device
won't work with DHCP.

If you use IP addr reservation, then what you're doing is
telling DHCP to assign that IP to the device whenever it
asks for one (the JDps). Set the JD550ps to use either
DHCP or BOOTP. In the DHCP reservation, you need to enter
the MAC addr of the JDps. If you use BOOTP, you can even
map/rename the device.

An easy way to get the MAC addr (via copy and paste) is to
set the device to DHCP, turn it off and then on, and find
the name under DHCP. Open its Properties, copy the MAC
and then paste this MAC into the reservation entry for
x.x.x.240. Save, and then power-cycle the JDps.

Hope this helps,
Eugene Tan
