Wondering how to send a windows message to all clients informing them of a
temporary interruption in services. Email is not effective as some don't
always have it on. But I would like to some-how send a message that "pops"
up on all clients that are in use informing them of a change. Is this
possible. Thanks,

Hi JM,

From a worstation dos box :

Send a message to a user.

MSG {username | sessionname | sessionid | @filename | *}
[/SERVER:servername] [/TIME:seconds] [/V] [/W] [message]

username Identifies the specified username.
sessionname The name of the session.
sessionid The ID of the session.
@filename Identifies a file containing a list of usernames,
sessionnames, and sessionids to send the message to.
* Send message to all sessions on specified server.
/SERVER:servername server to contact (default is current).
/TIME:seconds Time delay to wait for receiver to acknowledge msg.
/V Display information about actions being performed.
/W Wait for response from user, useful with /V.
message Message to send. If none specified, prompts for it
or reads from stdin.

From the SBS Admin Console

Computer Management (Local) | System Tools | Shared Folders > r-click ...
All Tasks > Send Console Message.

the previous two solutions are okay for clients running messenger service
(windows nt, 2000 and xp) and windows 9x workstations running winpopup. the
inconvenience for winpopup is that is filling space on taskbar and in most
cases users close it. i have found a very good replacement for winpopup:
realpopup. it's free (no licensing problems), it sits on systray and doesn't
have a close button (you must right-click on it's systray icon then choose
exit - so in most cases users won't close it)
http://www.realpopup.it/download.html
you cand distribute it via logon scripts (i have successfully installed it
on a 9x test machine then manually grabbed the files from program files and
exported it's registry settings)
main disadvantage: didn't figure out yet what change to make to registry to
disable auto-away mode (it's annoying: a user on 'away' mode does not
receive an instant pop-up, it just changes systray icon appearance)

Can't seem to get this to work.
Think my syntax is wrong.
Can you give me an example of a net send command using "Domain" as domain
name and send to "all users". The message is "Server shutdown at 1300
hours".

I cannot test it right now... but I'm pretty sure this is the way it goes:

Easiest way:
NET SEND * Server shutdown at 1300 hours

Other way:
NET SEND /DOMAIN:yourdomain.local Server shutdown at 1300 hours

Take a look at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;168893

Take into account that this is for computers not users... for specific users
you can use the MSG command and create a list of users and use the @filename
parameter.

Let me know if it works... if not... let me know as soon as I get to my home
I can post it.

HIH,

Javier
