Simple file permissions question.
Sorry if this is not in the correct forum, it was the nearest I could find.
I am simply trying to give a security group the following permission:
ALLOW:
View, Edit files
DENY:
Rename, Move files
Is there a way to give people the permissions to view & modify a file, but
not rename or move the file?

Shared Email Access - Is SBS the Answer?
I've got 8 users currently using a mix of Outlook and Outlook
Express. Over the years they have built up large email files
consisting of PDF's, JPG's, messages and other files for various long-
term projects. They currently have no true server, just a PC being
used as a file server/storage device. I intend to bring them all to
Outlook ASAP. A couple of the users have PST files in the 3 - 4 GB
size range. These files cannot be reduced in size and they will get
larger. A couple of the Outlook Express users have DBX files
totalling 3 and 5 GB.
We are looking for a way to allow them all to access one another's E-
Mail and associated files. Is SBS R2 the answer? Is there a BETTER
answer?
Thank you,

changes to default smtp server not taking affect?
Taking over IT duties for a SBS 2000 server, and there's something I'm not
quite understanding....
There is a Default SMTP Virtual Server that seems to be active. If I stop
it, and telnet to the server at port 25, the server will not respond. If I
start it, and try the telnet, the server does respond. Also, the queues and
current sessions folders within that virtual server seem to be live.
However, if I try to make a change to that Default SMTP Virtual Server, such
as trying to limited the concurrent connections, or connection timeout
value, or change the SMTP response banner, it doesn't seem to work - even
after a reboot. The changes show, but the server still gets well above the
# of simultaneous connections I set the limit to, and the SMTP banner still
shows the local PC name rather than the FQDN I set it to.
One other thing I notice is that the active badmail and queue folders are
under C:|Inetpub and not the Exchange folder like I would normally expect.
Can anyone tell me what's going on?
Thanks! Tag: new satellite website Tag: 179867
Winmgmt causing 100 per cent CPU cycles
I have an SBS2000 server which is showing high CPU usage. This is being
caused by winmgmt.exe cycling the CPU from the normal to 100 per cent. This
is not a quick spike but more of a build-up over a few minutes, peaking at
100 per cent and then falling off again. The cycle happens every 30 minutes.
I have checked the properties of WMI and ensured that logging is set to
errors only, and I have tried disabling logging.
The server is up to date with all patches through Windows Update although
Windows Update stopped working at the same time that this error started.
Windows Update now just gives error 80072ee2, ie can't get a response. Maybe
that's a coincidence, maybe it's not.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Desperate Routing Question! Help!
My company moved from a DSL Line today to a T1 line. Everything
was ready to go, I contacted my hosting company to change my mail
servers MX record and......they didn't do it. I have mail stuck right
now on the DSL's address. Here is what I am trying to do.
T1 - Cisco Router (12.22.3.1) - Firewall - 192.168.168.X Subnet -
Netopia 3300 - 67.65.32.100 (Mail Server IP)
I need to get the Netopia to route Incoming internet traffic into my
local network. I tried to configure NAT but it simply does not work
unless the Netopia is being used as a DHCP server...which is not an
option. Tag: new satellite website Tag: 179852

After I reinstalled my system (Win XP), it seems to me i don=B4t have my

reinstalling and/or disconecting the LAN cable (which I actually also

Strange Issue Moving from SBS 2000 to Server 2003 R2
I have a strange issue that I need help with â?? here are the details:
I recently moved a small business office off of Small Business Server 2000
which was running as a DC, DNS Server, DHCP, and IS 2000. This office has 10
users, so I went the fully manual way. I took a new Windows 2003 R2 server,
built a new DC, and added DNS and DHCP services to it. I changed the Domain
name when I did it as well, because the person who created the initial SBS
2000 domain named it the
same as their registered domain name (which caused issues with the
externally hosted web site, etc). The SBS 2000 domain name was
special-tees.com, and I built the new domain as home.special-tees.com. I
also switched the IP addressing scheme from a 192.168.0.0 group on SBS 2000
to a 10.0.0.0 group on the new domain.
While both domains were running at the same time I went to each workstation,
removed them from the SBS 2000 domain, removed the ISA 2000 Firewall client,
removed them from the old domain and put them in a Workgroup, rebooted,
joined the new domain, renewed their IP addresses with DHCP on the new
Windows 2003 R2 server (10.0.0.0), and configured the workstations Apps, etc
â?¦.. I kept both domains running at the same time because I wanted to make
sure I properly removed each workstation for the old domain so no traces of
the old domain would be left behind. Since they are completely different IP
ranges, they were never using the same default gateway address. I did that
for all of the workstations and they are all communicating fine with one
another. I then demoted the old SBS 2000
server and removed the AD, DNS, and DHCP roles that it had.
Here is the issue â?? they are having intermittent internet connectivity
issues. If I unplug the two Ethernet cables from the ISA 2000 server (which
was acting as their Internet proxy before we migrated to the new Domain),
they have an intermittent internet connection. Sometimes it is really slow,
sometimes it if fine, sometimes they have no connection at all. If there is
no connection I can go to the ISA server, plug the cables back in, and the
Internet connection is back right away at full speed. If I leave it plugged
in, the same thing happens â?? the internet access degrades and becomes
intermittent. If I unplug them the internet connection comes back immediately
â?? then the same thing happens again. What is going on? There are two
different IP addressing schemes, none of the systems are pointing to the old
gateway AT ALL on the ISA 2000 server, but for some reason the clients are
occasionally trying to get to the internet via the old ISA server! Am I
missing something here? I even cleared the DNS cache from the workstations
and nothing â?¦
Anyone have any ideas??

ISA 2000 with High Speed ADSL
Hi All,
I have moved a couple of my clients to high speed adsl (up 20Mbps download),
when I had the modem connected directly to the desktop a speed test showed a
very fast 20Mbps.
However when I do the speed test through SBS ISA 2000 as a normal shared
connection its maximum seems to be 8Mbps. I have tried several times on two
different networks and the same maximum 8Mpbs shows.
Does ISA 2000 throttle the speed? any suggestions (other than not using ISA
2000!) how to get the full speed? Tag: new satellite website Tag: 179839

Duplicate e-mails - KB 835734
I had a call this morning telling me that our mail server was sending out
large volumes of an e-mail that was sent to us. As it happens I think I've
resolved the immediate problem but I was told our server required patching
and was referred to knowledge base article 835734.
Indeed the article describe the problem exactly and I immediately downloaded
the patch, however, it won't install and I've now realised the article
relates to SBS 2003 but we're running SBS 2000. Does anyone know if there is
a similar patch for SBS 2000? I've tried various searches but found nothing
so far.
Any help would be appreciated as I'd rather not have a repeat of the problem.

Terminal server policy settings...
I am using some of the Terminal Server settings in group policy BUT I am NOT
using the "Sessions" setting entitled "Sets a time limit for active but idle
terminal server sessions". it is currently set to 'Not configured". Instead,
I have this setting configured in the users active directory profile on an
individual basis as some users are different than others. It is set on the
'Sessions' tab of their AD profile - and is typically set to 30 minutes.
However, today I noticed that a user is logged onto our win2K3 server and
has been active and idle (not disconnected) for over 2 hours - when his
settings only allows for 30 minutes!!!
Why might it be that he has not been yet disconnected? (which is what I set
to happen once a session limit has been reached)
I should also mention that when I attempt to remote control this users
session, it appears to hang. Could this be why this particular session is
unable to be disconnected in the time frame stated?

Shutting down exchange and SQL server gracefully...
We have a Windows 2000 SBS running Exchange and SQL Server. We have a Smart
UPS attached. We also hav a few other servers with Smart UPS's attached. We
are runing the powerchute business edition basic. I have noticed that if we
were to upgrade to the 'Delux' version of the Powerchute Business Edition,
it indicates that one of the advanced features it has is application
shutdown for SQL Server abnd Exchange server (among other apps).
My question is this... Is this something that we should really have? What
are the risks by not having that? Also, is there a way through a shutdown
script that this can be done instead of having to purchase the software? If
so, I could just set it up to run in a shutdown script... (through the
Smart-UPS)

terminal server group policy
I have set the 'Environment' tab in many users AD user profile to start a
particular application at logon. This has been working just fine - UNTIL I
modifed a GPO by adding the terminal server policies to my Windows 2000 SBS
machine and then set some of the computer 'Terminal Server' policies
settings. I did NOT set the policy where you can specify a program to run at
start up entitled 'Start a program on connection'. It shows as 'Not
Configured' for both the computer and user configurations. However, now what
is happening is that when a user logs onto our terminal server they are
seeing the desktop instead of it starting the application I specified in the
environment settings in their user profile.
Any idea what may be happening here and what I can do tomake sure that the
startup program specified in a users profile is run when they log on?

Migratign to Windows Server 2003 AD
I have a client with a single Small Business Server 2000. We need to upgrade
to upgrade to Windows Server 2003.
I am aware of the ADMT which can transfer user and computer accounts to a
new domain, but this involves quite a bit of work on each workstation and
would like to maintain the existing active directory domain to avoid that.
Is it possible to do the upgrade in the following way? (I know it may be a
long shot, but my creative brain has been working over-time)
1) Install new Windows 2000 Server, promote to DC in SBS domain.
2) Disconnect SBS server from network.
3) Seize FSMO Roles on Windows 2000 DC.
4) Install new Windows 2003 server, do forest prep, domain prep, etc on 2000
DC, then promote to DC in 2000 domain.
5) Transfer FSMO roles to 2003
6) Demote Windows 2000 DC to member server.
7) Restore SQL and file data from backup.
If we manage to successfully do the upgrade in this way, will we be left
with an Active Directory with the same limitations as SBS 2000 e.g. only 50
workstations, no domain trusts, etc.? Tag: new satellite website Tag: 179758

backup DC GPO settings...
We have a Windows 2000 small business Server and are using a WIndwos 2003

There are group policy settings for terminal server (both computer and user
settings) on the win2K3 server that do not exist on the win2K small bus
server. I would like to use some of these policy settings in our environment
if I can. It appears that I can set policy settings on the backup domain
controller (WIn2K3) that I do not have on the win2K small bus server and it
works - but will a replicate from the primary back to the backup erase them
I wonder?
I also noticed that when I went back over to teh win2K small bus server, and
called up the group policy, I got errors when looking at the GPO setting
that included the terminal server stuff I had changed on the win2k3 server.
Is there a way that I can somehow ADD those settings from the win2k3 server
to the older win2K small bus server so that it does not matter which server
I use to manage the GPO settings?

Replacing BDC Server
This small company is on an extrememly tight budget. We replaced last
year the primary server with a Proliant ML370. Our backup server is a
sever year old dell optiplex desktop. I really want to replace it but

Obviously another Proliant ML370 is out of the question. I'm thinking
if I can find a server replacement for $500ish management would give
in. Is there an afforadable backup domain server I can investigate? If
it's new with warranty that would help; but, I'm thinking a used one

Determine if SBS installed
On an older server (didn't initially configure) I'm receiving a warning that
the "License usage for a product licensed in per server mode is nearing the
maximum number of licenses purchased. Consult the Application event log or
License Manager from the Administrative Tools folder for more information."
When I try to go to Licensing in Control Panel or Administrative tools, I
receive the following: "Not available in Microsoft BackOffice Small Business
Server. To add client licenses, choose Manage Server from the Start Menu and
select About Small Business Server"
Manage Server is not available from the Start Menu. I suspect the original
configurator of the server must have did a modified installation, though I'm
not sure why. Is there an executible I could run to access this Manager
Server program so I could determine the number of licenses we actually have
on this server?
If I do a winmsd, the Operating System is just listed as Windows 2000
Server. It says nothing about about it being a Small Business Server.
Thanks much. Tag: new satellite website Tag: 179728

Transferring AD from SBS2003 SP1 to W2K3 Server R2
Hi -
I have a client who is currently on Small Business Server 2003, and
have outgrown their setup. I'm replacing their SBS2003 box with a new
W2K3 R2 server, and want to transfer Active Directory so as to
simplify workstation reconfiguration. Please note the following:
1. Exchange is not used, so is not a factor.
2. The new server will not have the same name as the previous one (it
was poorly named).
3. The SBS server will be reformatted and reinstalled as a Terminal
Server.
4. I'm not interested in swing migration.
I know SBS only supports 1 SBS server per domain, but have heard you
can add a standard (full version) Windows server as a 2nd domain
controller. I've also have heard SBS insists on holding the FSMO
roles, and will shut down after a period of time if the roles are
transferred. I have found an article that details what I feel to be
the correct procedure, and it is here:
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Migrating-Small-Business-Server-2003-Exchange-Standard-Part1.html
I know I may also have to run the R2 version of ADPREP to get the SBS
2003 SP1 Active Directory scheme up to date. I just need confirmation
that this is a supported procedure, that SBS will allow you to
transfer FMSO roles (even if it doesn't like it), and that there are
no limitations or "poison pills" in the SBS version of AD that would
keep it from operating correctly if transferred to a full W2K3 server.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi.
Am I going nuts? Can I or can I not install sbs 2000 in application mode?
I selected it during setup and have people logging on with old 98 boxes just
fine.
I've pasted a comment from the terminal_services group.
Unless he/she was talking about sbs 2003.
Thank you.

IP address already in use on new install
I have done about 10 SBS2003 setups over the last 18 months and have not had
this issue:
Dual core 3.2 4 g system memory, two nic
At setup both nics are identified, one external is disconnected and one
internal just connected to a switch with no other users or DHCP.
Next step configures local IP address and no matter what I put in there
(192.168.x.254, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.x.254 or nothing for gateway)
With a gateway in I get IP address already in use, with no gateway I get
invalid IP address.

procedure for SBS 2000 to Windows 2003 plus exchange 2007
Hi all,
I have a SBS 2000 with exchange 2000 in a domain, and I want to reomve the
SBS 2000 with the Windows 2003 plus exchange 2007.
Is it possible to join the windows 2003 into the SBS 2000 domain, promote
the windows 2003 to DC and install exchange 2007 into the windows 2003 DC?
Is there any reference in microsoft web talking about this scenario?

VPN to SBS2000 Shares
I have a Widows XP PRo Desktop at a remote location, that is NOT a part of
the SBS2000 Domain. I have connected to my SBS2000 Server via Native Windows
VPN connector, connected successfully, and then tried to MAP a drive and
Create a Network place. Both failed. Is there a way to connect to a share
without establishing a DOMAIN relationship?
