I have named the domain on a new stand alone sbs 2000
server DOMAIN and realize it needs to be DOMAIN.local
How do I go about renaming the domain. The server is new
and am not worried about any data loss.

You don't.

You need to reformat in order to change the AD domain name. If this server
is new... and this is your first/second SBS install then I don't see any
reason why not practice reinstalling it.

However, if you are only worried about seeing your externally hosted
website... then just fix it per www.smallbizserver.net instructions. IMHO
(and I could get smacked by SG for saying this)... if that's the only issue
that you are experiencing: this is hardly a reason for a complete reinstall.

Cheers,

Javier

If u can I would recomment reformating and doing a clean install to change
it back to .local. Its worth it believe me. I am getting ready to change
mine to .local from a FRDN. There are just issues u will have if u dont
change it to local.

Ok, my question then is will a reinstall require me to
reconfig my RAID setup and all that or will it just
reinstalling the OS?

If you reformat it flattens the server to the ground, all drivers on install
will need to done etc.. as if you built it yourself and the drives where
virgin new.

Is there a MS Support article that explains this in depth. I have a client
that set up SBS and needs motivation to reformat and install now while the
server is not being used, rather than down the line when the server is
populated.

bugger Javier, bugger MS, it's late and I'm full o'booze and m'self.

I may actually change m' tune due to the (who cares about) Mac issue (after
all, they could fix this by buying computers rather than toys).

Call your local DNS domain
whatever.somethingimpossibleoratleasthardtoinvent, otherwise you will
experience problems FULL STOP.

Hi Bill:

Thank you for using the Microsoft Small Business Server Newsgroup. I
understand the issue to be that on a new install of SBS 2000 the domain
name was left "Domain" with no extension. This will be an issue for DNS,
as "Domain" with no extension is not a fully qualified domain name and we
recommend changing it to <yourdomainname>.local per the following Knowledge
Base article that discusses this:

296250 The Domain Name System Name Recommendations for Small Business Server
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=296250

In a Windows 2000 server environment it would often be possible to DCPromo
the server down to a member server, then DC Promo it up with the correct
domain name, depending on the role it plays in the network. This is not
possible in an SBS environment, mainly because of Exchange. Exchange
writes information into the Active Directory, which would be deleted during
a DCPromo, in turn breaking Exchange and requiring a manual removal of
Exchange before it could be reinstalled. Potentially there could be other
issues down the road as well, so we do not recommend doing a DCpromo on an
SBS server.

Unfortunately, the only way to correct the problem is to reformat and
reinstall. If you are using Hardware RAID then there will be no need to
set that back up, you will just need to format the drive and reinstall SBS,
with the new domain name.
