    - Mac's on Networks - how to get pop mail? I have a fairly unique situation. SBS running a company, exchange hosting their mail, all using PC's - hunky dory. I have a division of that company using some Macs, with a different mail address requiring POP mail access and access to the same files on the server. PC's have no problem with 2 profiles in outlook & Mac's have no problem logging into network for internet & file access. Problem I have is how to get pop mail access on Mac OSX without resorting to VirtualPC (no budget!). I can add smtp mail to their existing profiles and use outlook for mac, but sending mail reverts to the exchange.local default outgoing email address. POP mail clients on mac (entourage, OE, IEmail) all fail to permit POP mail. Please help & email me direct if necessary. Thanks Tag: VPN remote file access Tag: 122326

    - Licensing Questions My client has SBS2000 installed at their main office, 30 employees. The client also has several remote offices, with 3-5 employees at each location. We have installed Firewall to Firewall VPN with one remote office to the main office for file transfer. The remote offices all use either POP3 or OWA to access email. My questions are: 1. How is a VPN connection "counted" regarding to licensing? The Firewall-to-Firewall connection is one connection with 2 users behind the remote firewall (peer- to-peer networked). Does the IPSec VPN connection affect licensing different than the PPTP VPN connection? 2. Given a fast VPN connection, we are considering switching from retrieving email through the POP3 server and using the Exchange server for the remote users.     - licensing and browsing I am having several issues with a new SBS2000 installation. One problem is that at various times certain workstations (if not all workstations) cannot browse the domain. The SBS2K box can always browse the domain. For all computers other than the SBS box, the domain is listed under "Microsoft Windows Network" but no computers are listed under it. Clicking the domain does nothing (does not produce any error messages either). This server is in a "production" environment, so I am not able to reboot it at will, but I believe that previous reboots have made browsing possible for a limited amount of time. I have a second Win2000 server (that I think I would like to also be a master browser) that I have promoted to DC that periodically gets the "The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{<big GUID-looking number>}. The backup browser is stopping." error. Drives mapped to shares on either server (from any workstation or server) seem to function normally. I am also having a licensing problem, so I am wondering if it is related to the browsing issue. I am periodically getting the "The product Windows Server is out of licenses. Use License Manager from the Administrative Tools folder for more information on which users are out of compliance and how many licenses should be purchased." error message on the SBS2K machine. I have 25 CALs (the normal 5 plus a 20 CAL add pack) with less than 25 client computers (including the second Win2K server) in the network. Most clients are XP pro (SP1). There are 4 Win2K pro (SP4) machines and two NT4 (SP6) machines. All Win2K computers in the network have SP4 and I do not use Veritas backup software, so the licensing issues related to these products should not apply. Clicking "about" from the SBS administrator console does indeed show 25 as the number of licenses. License Manager on the second Win2K server shows: --Purchase history is completely blank. --(On the Products view tab) Windows server as having 0 "per seat purchased", 30 "per seat allocated", 0 "per server purchased", and -5 "per server reached"; Microsoft BackOffice is all zeros. --(On the Clients (Per Seat) tab) All domain users are listed with a 1 for "Unlicensed Usage" and a 0 for "Licensed Usage"; all "computers" (with a $ appended to the name) are also listed with a 1 under "Unlicensed Usage". I think the 30 "per seat allocated" listed on the Products view tab is related to this because the sum of the users and "computers" (with a $ on the end) is 30. Each client workstation is evidently being counted twice -- once for the user and once for the "computer". --At various times, the browsing difficulty mentioned above prevents me from seeing any computers on the Server Browser tab, but when it is visible, the SBS2K shows "per server" mode for 30 concurrent connections. I'm not sure where this "30" is coming from unless somehow it is adding the 25 from the SBS2K with the 5 that come with standard Win2K server. --I attempted to create a license group, but it appeared to do nothing more than change the icon next to the users from a head to a yellow warning (exclamation mark) symbol. I also attempted to "add" licenses. License manager accepted my input (I received no error messages), but the Purchase History tab is still blank. I don't remember ever selecting "per server" mode during the SBS installation. I know I wouldn't have consciously selected "per server" because I want both servers to be in "per seat" mode. Can SBS2K operate in "per seat" mode? I thought that it could because I have read that the SBS2K CALs allow clients to connect to other Win2K servers in the same domain without the need for addition Win2K server CALs. If SBS2K can operate in "per seat" mode, and if my SBS2K box is in "per server" mode, how do I change it to "per seat" (license manager and license applet in control panel do not work in SBS)?     - VPN & PCAnywhere problem I have a SBS that people log into through the VPN. However, when people are logged in through the VPN they cannot use the PCAnywhere or even ping that computer. I have tried pinging the client computer and I can't reach it through my client; however, I can ping it from the main server. The VPN client is coming in on IP x.1.x.x, however all the local clients in the lan are x.0.x.x. I'm not sure if this means anything. If anyone could suggest anything it would be greatly appreciated.     - New to VPN's Can some one help me to start of in the right direction. I am looking at the benefits of creating a vpn from home to my office. I am new to this so I am not sure what I need to acheive this. I am running SBS2000 with 1 nic, the network runs on a private netowrk IP setting. I have a nats setup on my router. The router has a fixed IP address. We have an ADSL internet connection and I will soon be upgrading to one at home from an ISDN. I do not know how to open ports on my router it is a black box provided by BT.     - sbs 2000 migrating exchange.... I have a SBS 2000 that is running exchange on it. The server is old and is running on it's last leg. I have another box that I have loaded 2000 server on it. I have kept the new server as a workgroup and I have connected it to the network. On the old machine, I have mapped a drive to the new machine and I am trying to use the exchange migration wizard and it's not allowing me to migrate the directory to the new folder on the new drive. I would love to have all of the data moved to the new server and keep the same ip address as the old. I have read the article on 'How to Upgrade SBS 4.X to SBS 2000 on a new computer'.     - Backup Script Hi, Quick ?..... Have two servers currently. 1. SBS2000 used for normal SBS operation....exchange, SQL, file/print server. And then 2nd member server which runs a script every hour to copy all file from sbs2000 server that has changed in the last hour. However using the Xcopy script that I have made as time goes by the 2nd servers drives fill up because it does not compare the two it just adds the files but if I for instance archive something and delete it is still there. Although sometimes this can come in handy my drive is not infinite. Is there a better way of doing this or a utitlty that will compare the files from each server?     - eTrust Antivirus gateway - control center won't start Today we installed eTrust Antivirus Gateway Management components and Gateway Edition component. After rebooting an error appeared when the Control Center tried to start: From "Control Center - eTrust Antivirus Gateway" "Failed to connect to database.     - OWA on seperate server I have read on this site, it is not recommended to run OWA on the SBS box. We have a seperate Win2k server that we use to run our company website. (using a ISA publishing rule.) Would it be a good idea to move the OWA to this seperate server? Does anyone know of any instructions on how to do this (i.e. install OWA on a webserver?). We currently have OWA on the SBS box. Do I just need to recreate the webfolders in IIS (pointing them to the proper exchange folders)? In the end I want to purchase a Https certificate.     - Migrating email OK...finally got the go ahead to make the migration for my client's email from MailMax on their old server to Exchange on the SBS box I built for them. Old server is its own domain, has MailMax 4.8 on it and the clients use Outlook and OE to connect to it. They pull the email down, and it is deleted from the host. There is a fairly cheesy map of the network layout here: http://www.3nf-inc.com/ccc_network_map.htm Would moving the email be as simple as running the ICW, specifying mydomain.com as the address, and re-routing the mail ports to the SBS IP address? Just trying to make sure I don't miss a step and hose their systems... Exchange is currently running just fine for internal emails, but they are not using it.     - restoring exchange message store Hello group: My problem: Installed c/s/m suite, and because I could not get the virus definitions due to a problem with the serial number I ticked block all attachments, guess what? It deleted all of the attachments in the message store. I have my backups from exchange, and I would like to restore my mailboxes.     - Backing Up Email Hi, I use Arcserve 8.6 to backup my servers, and on my SBS server, I get this message hundreds of times in my log WARNING: "Alex Barnes [alexb]?Top of Information Store?Journal?Archive?C:\WTSRV\Profiles\alexb\Desktop\New Microsoft Word Document.doc" is a corrupt file. This file cannot verify. ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ Because of these messages. the job is reported as failed. But these documents dont exist at the specified locations anymore so I dont understand why it is trying to back them up. Is there somewhere I need to clear down to remove all remaining traces??     - Mail services stopping frequently Hi all; I have a Small Business Server supporting 35 clients, fully patched, and the mail services stop on thier own, without warning. No pattern, no preceeding events in the application or system logs, they just stop. Typically, it involves the W3 service, Exchange routing, smtp, pop3, nntp, imap, all the core Exchange services. I have all the services set to auto- restart, but this is not enough... when they decide to take a powder, down it comes. They will restart manually.     - How to manage client upgrades from the Server Hi Excuse me for my ignorance on this issue but I have just taken over a domain where the clients do not have internet access (this is something I have never encountered before). Now because the client computers do not have internet access I want to utilize the SBS function of managing the software upgrades to the clients and load all the windows updates onto the server. This part I got and they are all sitting waiting for loading to the clients. Now we have the problem that as soon as you double click on any of the .exe's in the update files I get an error message saying that they are not valid win32 applications and it bombs out. Help!     - Exchange running like a slug Hi, our exchange has gone really slow, even internal mail takes about 1 - 2 hours to get delivered. The outgoing mail shows in the outbox for around 30 secs, (it used to go straight away).     - Two users with the same name ! Hello, We have a new employee starting in a weeks time, problem is that his name is the same as another employee here, I thought that SBS would let you have two users with the same name details as long as their usernames were different i.e. jsmith, jsmith2 etc, this isn't the problem. The add user wizard in SBS won't let me enter two users with the same first and second names. I know I could just have "John Smith 2" as his AD name, but any emails he sends will have the sender name as "John Smith 2" right?     - Can't restart OWA site On the weekend I restarted our SBS2K server as we were having some issues accessing our SQL server. On restarting the SQL server is fine but our OWA service was no longer visible. Via the console I see IIS - server - Default Web Site (Stopped) I tried to restart it but got 'Address already in use' There are some other web sites the Admin site (port 3467) & Symantec Anti-virus (port8081) are running fine and I can connect to them. I can't find what is using port 80 but I expect it is ISA server using it as a proxy. The server has a single NIC behind an ADSL router/firewall with port forewarding to port 80 on the server.     - Redirecting general email etc. Hi, I've posted this on the Exchange newsgroup as well. I'm the network administrator (sort of) for a network consisting of a Windows Small Business Server 2000 with 10 client workstations, most running NT4 SP6a, some on XP Pro. There are a couple of issues at present. 1) Before we got the server, we had a peer-to-peer LAN & all our email went to one address (bushfire@shoal.net.au). When we got the server, we got a domain name as well (b-es.com.au). It was set up so that all the email for a specific person could go to that person's Outlook inbox. However, to catch any messages addressed to the old email address, it was set up so they went to the boss's Outlook. He now wants them to be redirected to the receptionist's Outlook. On the server, I've gone into the Email Adresses tab on the boss's User Properties in Administrative Tools/AD Users & Computers, deleted the appropriate SMTP (b-es@shoal.net.au), and added it to the receptionist's one. Didn't work. I've looked at the Recipient Policy in Microsoft Exchange, but it only has the default polcy, got nothing about this that I can see. Help! 2) Related issue. The boss wants to set up some other general type email addresses, & have them go the receptionist as well. Do I just add them in her Email Addresses tab in AD Users & Computers? I tried it, but one of them wouldn't take, it was already being used, I assume it's related to the previous issue. ie he wants one of the general addresses to be bushfire@b-es.com.au. 3) More of an Outlook question, but may be related to the previous questions. We are all running Outlook 2002, & I set up some Public folders for contacts, staff movements etc. After I set them up, I went around & ticked the option "Show this folder as an email Address Book" on the various client machines & made it the default address book etc. However, this option is greyed out on the receptionist's Outlook. When I created the public folders, in Permissions I set the default Permission Level to Editor. When this problem occurred on the receptionist's machine, I specifically added her in the permissions as an editor. Still coudn't add the contacts as an address Book for her. What gives? 4) Finally, any ideas about stopping SPAM. Do I push for a corporate solution like "Trend Micro", or can I get away with one of the freebies around such as Ella. Internal NIC goes to Ethernet wireless access point (192.168.1.1) 5 client computers running win 2k or xp pro all configured with firewall client. DHCP from server is running, all clients configured for DHCP. IP's assigned dynamically. Earthlink as ISP. Modem hooked directly to phone source. ISA server configured with internet filters enabled. All client computers access internet through proxy server local address 192.168.1.2. IE connections set for proxy server 192.168.1.2(8080) Exchange server running with default configurations. All clients have internal accounts as username@cts.local. Running Outlook 2002. What's Working: All clients can access the internet. Configured Exchange pop3 connector with 3 clients using mail account information from earthlink and internal user. Scheduled to contact earthlink each hour during the day. At present all clients are receiving mail from ISP via exchange server. Clients can address email to internal users and email is sent and received correctly. What's Not: Sending email externally does not work. When addressing email in outlook to an external email address, outbox shows mail being sent and sent mail registers as being sent. However no outside email address is being reached. When checking server protocol SMTP external outbound mail is showing in the queue as addresses unreachable and in some cases delayed. Have forced email to be sent by forcing connection and enumerating 100 messages. Email recipients report that reply address is shown as my local domain (not registered with earthlink) and any attempt to reply results in mail not deliverable from outside source. Help: I am looking for any assistance possible. Resources for learning about outbound mail from Exchange or specific how to's on setting up a local LAN that connects to an ISP for internal and external email. Any help would appreciated.     - netmeeting and desk top sharing have a test system(sbs2k) that run on vmware. had it running and was messing about with NAT and VPN. Has ISA wide open so that it wasn't a factor. also have a win 2k pro virtual machine running. Noticed that i couldn't use netmeeting desktop sharing (to the virtual client) when NAT was present. when NAT gone then sharing worked no problem. even tried this from outside my network which is running thru a nat enabled dlink router and still the same. Is there an issue with NAT and netmeeting? the vmware server is set up as having the usual 2 nic setup internal 192.168.7.xx external 192.168.0.xx (which is my internal home lan anyway) any ideas? I think it was Wednesday night I installed GFI's 'Mail Security' trial, and probably Thurs morn when I asked it to scan everything, incoming, outgoing, and internal. With the default rules in place I suggest this is not a good idea. Mail Security finished scanning my slow IO (ATA33) system some time Friday. The near 1000 alert messages are OK (ctrl-a markasread) but the GB of files it quarantined stopped Exchange due to space for both the databases and the damned logfiles (another couple of GB) really cheesed me off, should it not stop before consuming everything but 233KB of HDD? Glad it wasn't my OS partition :-) HEY, now all I gotta do is logon to the server and use Outlook to OK the remaining 450 (I've already done several hundred) quarantined items BECAUSE THE USELESS PIECE OF RUBBISH (sorry, I'm upset) DOESN'T HAVE A QUARANTINE CONSOLE (that I can find) where I can 'bulk release' the items. AND it seems to have blown Exchange's 'single instance storage', my exchange DB has grown by near 100% due to this experiment.
