i am using trend micros csm smb suite and the spam filter is very effective.
i am noticing that most of the spam i get is for employees that dont work
here anymore and their accounts have been removed from the server completly.

is there a setting in exchange system manager (somewhere ?) that will allow
exchange to reject delivery of a emails for users no longer set up on the
server ? ie mark@ourdomain.com dosnt exist but charles@ourdomain.com does

charles.

I don't know about a setting, but there is a way to handle what you want to
do. Here's what I do for my sites:

1. Set up a distribution group and name it 'DeadMail'
2. Right click and go to Properties
3. Set scope to 'universal' and group type to 'distribution'
4. Click on 'Email Addresses' tab and then add those email addresses that
you want don't want to receive emails from

Now, take a look at what you have: you have a distribution group with NO
members. Any incoming email that contains an address that matches what you
have in the DeadMail distribution group will then be directed to all members
of that distribution group. But, since there are no memembers, the email is
essentially thrown away into the bit bucket in the sky!

In Exchange 2003 there are some clicks which include reject any email
if there is not a users in AD. I don't think the clicks apply to
Exchange 2000. Kevin's idea works well for him.

Jim, as I upgraded from SBS2000 to SBS2003, my 'DeadMail' setup was already
in place, and I had no need to look for the clicks you say now exist in
SBS2003.

So I started hunting for such clicks -- I think I found it:

Exchange > Global Settings > Message Delivery,
go to Properties for Message Delivery, and then go to Recipient Filtering.

Can someone confirm if that indeed is the correct place to block emails for
specific email addresses (mostly incorrectly spelled addresses)???

Jim, yep - I tested it and the feature in Exchange 2003 does work, and will
allow me to stop using my DeadMail file! I would be interested if someone
could verify whether or not that feature exists in Exchange 2000 - that is:

Exchange > Global Settings > Message Delivery,
go to Properties for Message Delivery, and then go to Recipient Filtering.

Hey Kevin:

Configure Exchange 2003 to check recipients in SMTP protocol
http://blogs.msdn.com/dlemson/archive/2003/10/17/52019.aspx

For Exchange 2000, see the last question on the page at the link above. The
answer says this feature isn't in E2K.

Hmmm ... I took a slightrly different approach to implementing it. Rather
than clicking on the 'Filter recipents who are not in the Directory' option,
I manually added those email addresses that I wanted it to reject.

Les posted how he does it. I discovered what Les posted in my Exchange
pocket administrator guide. There are actually about a half dozen
clicks I do. Do a goole for Les, exchange, ndr in the 2003 group.
