I have a user who's hard drive was failing (according to
the Dell Diagnostics). I replaced the hard drive, but
failed to backup her mailbox. With the new Hard drive,
she sees new email, but not old email she kept in her
inbox. She now needs to refer to some old email she had
kept in her inbox. How can I recreate her old mailbox? I
do daily backups and could restore from there, but I'm not
sure where to look.

The user account was NOT deleted and recreated.
Hard drive failed and was replaced. New HD had OS and MS
office installed existing user signed on, set up Exchange
email box, but only new mail is displayed.
The user's Outlook profile is for Exchange ONLY.

Hi Vicente

If it is the drive on the user's PC that failed and her mail is only stored
in Exchange (i.e. on the server), there should be no problem at all once the
new drive has been installed in the PC, software reinstalled and the user is
logged into their account. In these circumstances the only reason you would
expect old mail to be lost would be if it had been archived to a local .pst
folder on the failed hard drive. There is no reason why any server-based
mail in Exchange would be lost due to a PC hard drive failing.

Either the user had this mail stored in a .pst file which was on the failed
hard drive, or there is some other reason for the mail being lost from
Exchange. I tend to take what the users tell me with a pinch of salt. Their
idea of the mail being in their inbox doesn't always correlate directly with
the truth of the matter :)

You say that you have daily backups. Is it only the server that is backed
up, or the PCs too? If it is only the server backed up, you will have lost
any local .pst files if you have no means of accessing the data on the old
hard drive. If you have a backup of the PC I would recommend looking there
for .pst files as a starting point.

Regards,
Andrew Stevens.
