Power user managed to crash and burn the W2k machine he was using. installed
XP Pro sp2 onto the machine as a new install and reloaded all the progs so
he could keep his data.

I've changed the logon name for this user from firstnamesurname to
firstname. I've reset the password and he can logon to the domain with no
problem from his machine and remotely via VPN.

However....

He cannot access his mailbox. POP3 produces the "unknown user/bad password"
routine. Even telnetting to the server and explicitly entering his new logon
and password fails to gain access.

I have two questions:

1) why isn't pop3 recognising the new password? (I've restarted all exchange
services)
2) If I have to create a new box for him, how do I get the messages already
in his box transferred to the new box?

Why are you using POP3 and not "clean" Outlook?

My guess is that you are using the wrong username. Try both username -
and also the corresponding full email addresses.

Export and import using Outlook (log in on domain)
or
Exmerge

We're using Goldmine as our email platform atm. It needs pop3 access to the
exchange mailbox. I used the telnet to check if I could logon to the pop3
server using the credentials supplied to the user.

Here's what the situation:

1) user can logon to domain with firstname/password.
2) OWA works with firstname/password and offers messages to the user.
3) telnetting to the SBs on 110 using firstname/password is unknown user/bad
password.

I'm stuck. If the username and password for pop3 are wrong, how can the user
logon to the domain using the same username and password?

Because the username that the POP3 service looks up are not the same as
the username looked up when authenticating against the domain. I've no
theory to back this up, but just pure experience. How you tried the
different usernames as I suggested?
