    - ISA install-VPN help I have a server that was originally configure with one nic and a 3com firewall. We have moved to a new location and was unabled to get the 3Com configured.     - How does one retrive WAN IP address for remote access I have a Netopia router that apparently has some fairly advanced settings to allow me access into my office to use services such as XP Pro remote desktop I see where to configure the port forwarding in the router (TCP/UDP 3389) and I have the desktop access turned on at the client. But when I query the router info for the WAN side IP it shows me a private 10.0.0.x address. LAN side is in the 192.x.x.x range which I expected. How can i connect to this router (and thus the workstations) ? How can I find out the public address to this router? Contact the ISP (which could be a long wait) Or is ther another way? Ipconfig /all is no help either only reporting the LAN side IP. Also, once this is figured out,assuming their are 10 workstations all using XP Pro and configured for remote desktop, how does a remote user select *their* desktop machine? Does the rdp client have a means of viewing all available desktops? Not sure how you would then connect from a public address to an internal private address. thanks so much!     - DNS Hosting a website on SBS2000. I'm also running DNS server. However, external clients can't resolve address. I can nslookup www.mydomain.com dns.mydomain.com and get the address. Users internal to the next work can resolve addresses in the DNS, such as dns, mail, www. I have server publishing rules for DNS Query and DNS Zone Transfer Server in ISA as well as packet filters as well as the DNS Filter. There is a router in front of the server, however the ISA server logs reveal that packets are getting through. I'm at a complete loss now. I've tried a variety of configurations and followed instructions at http://www.microsoft.com/serviceproviders/whitepapers/isp_dns_config.asp. Where am I going wrong?     - shared fax / calling card dialing options Shared fax dials the appropriate calling card prefixes set up in the location dialing rules, but does not dial the suffixes after the phone number.     - outbound fax problems I have a problem with my outgoing faxes through SBS2000. I have tried to send a fax with an attachment to an outside agent through Outlook XP. It is always being returned to my inbox stating that it's undeliverable. The content of the undeliverable e-mail looks like this: Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. Subject: Apple Vacations Fax Sent: 12/8/2003 3:31 PM The following recipient(s) could not be reached: FAX:Dennis Loomis@+1 (563) 386-3093 on 12/8/2003 3:31 PM The e-mail address could not be found. Perhaps the recipient moved to a different e-mail organization, or there was a mistake in the address. Check the address and try again. I tried sending a fax to another person in my contact list, and that fax goes through perfectly. Why would it fax to one person, but not to another? HELP! Thanks!     - exchange I have a user who is getting copies of everyones sent and recieved e-mails in the domain. We download POP3 mail from individual accounts from our hosted mail into exchange. I am getting undeliverable messages for his account from anything we try to send him from the outside world. One read " A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients." I have since killed his account on the POP3 connector and he is recieving mail at the ISP now. We have done no config changes on exchange. I am at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.     - Create Folder for a Group Forgive me to ask this very basic question: How do I create a folder in SBS2K in order to give access only to a group of user? I do not want anyone except this group to see the contents of the folder. I created a group (eg. MyGroup) from AD and added few users including myself to this group. I can see this group name under ..\Mybusiness\Group folder. I then created a folder (eg. GroupFolder) in the Server and select properties. I choose "Do not share this folder" in the Sharing tab. I added the MyGroup in the Security tab with Full access. I remove Everyone from the Security tab. When I try access to the file folder, I got the error "Access is denied". What did I do wrong?     - Shared Fax / Dialing rules / Outlook XP - need help with 100+ faxing per day ! I need to get Shared Fax working for a customer has Win2000 SBS (W2K sp3) and Outlook XP clients. I have done the Contacts import/export conversion so that ALL contacts have the canonical form dialing showing up. (i.e. +1-555-222-3333). The local phone company requires area-code inclusion for LOCAL calls. Long distance calls require +1 on the number. There are 2 USR 56k PCI modems installed on the server. they were on the Server 2000 HCL list. I have added to the Shared Fax - Outgoing Routing - Rules to use "1" as the country code for "all areas", "all devices". The default rule is still in place. So...the user STILL does not get a successful fax connection to a 1+###-###-#### attempt but you can pick up the same line with a handset and dial directly with a good result. Mostly, I'd love to hear from anyone who does a high volume of faxing 100+ per day, successfully. Also, which computer really controls the dialing...the client or the Win2K server? please, any help would be appreciated. I do have a MS support incident i can use but i want to get real world advice as to whether this thing will ever really work ...even with MS Support.     - Security on Company Sub Folders All, I posted a question a while ago about sub folders not inheriting the permissions set from higher folders. I have been looking at this again as it has come up after a few weeks. Below is the permissions for the company drive and a new sub folder created on a Win XP Pro machine. The Test document is not available to any other clients. D:\Company Shared - Domain Users, Domain Admins - FC not ticked to inherit from Parent. D:\Company shared\Advisory - Domain Users, Domain Admins - FC inherited from D:\Company Shared - Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object is ticked D:\company shared\advisory\test - FC Everyone D:\Company Shared\Advisory\Test\test document.doc - FC Administrators, System - ONLY Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object is ticked. When the Win XP Pro client created the about Sub folder Test and then the Test Document.doc the security is all wrong. Anyone any ideas why this is happening?     - Exchange log files Let me start by admitting that I don't take good enough care of my SBS 2000 box - that should avoid the 'serves you right' replies :-) I have SBS 2000 serving approx 35 employees, and I back the server up using Backup Exec 9.0. I run a FULL backup each weekday night. I have 2 large Exchange files... priv1.edb 2.8Gb priv1.stm 8.3Gb However, I have noticed today that I also have approx 12Gb of log files on another drive (e.g. E0008EDA.log), and the vast majority of these are from Sunday 7th December. Can somebody explain what is going on ? I thought the log files were deleted once they were backed up ? How can I have 12Gb of log files from a day when the server was barely used ? Ian.     - blicking unwanted virus spam In exchange is it possible to block these virus things claiming to be from microsoft? Our antivirus picks up around 10 per day and they jsut sit in the SMTP queue as the antivirus cant delete it. We use Mcafee. Is there any other way other than putting the adresses into the filter list, of blocking these annoying emails? If not, in the filter list can you block say a whole domain as in anything from.adviser.net as an example? Other people must have this very frustrating issue!!     - joining a domain I would like to know if i can join a domain from a remote site. I have setup some laptops to connect to a small buisness server 2000 using VPN i can connect to the server and use outlook to connect to the exchange server this works fine, The problem is I can not browse the network. I have had a pc hardwired to the network and joined a domain, when i connected this through VPN i can browse the network. does the client need to be connected to the domain?? can i join a domain through VPN????     - Is SBS 2000 right for me? I am new to SBS 2000 and Exchange as an admin. I have used them for years, but never set them up. I am suggesting a recommendation that SBS be installed at my brother's law office. Here's the scenario: In the office there are 10 PCs running peer-to-peer. There is a file server installed. There are 2 partners in the office and each has a secretary. Each partner uses a laptop and a pda. The secretary syncs the pda with her local copy of Outlook. But each partner cannot use his laptop to see current Outlook appointments because they are on the secretary's system. My idea is to install SBS 2000 and create a domain. Each secretary could maintain the corresponding partner's calendar by opening it in Outlook. When the partner wants the PDA synced up the secretary can open the appropriate calendar (and any other folders) and sync it. The partner would also be able to see his own calendar in Outlook. Does this sound reasonable? Another option is to forego SBS and Exhange and have the secretary sync her Outlook to the pda, then have the partner sync the pda to his copy of Outlook. Still another option is to sync each copy of Outlook using Vaita's OSASync. I think they will get much better mileage out of SBS and Exchange.     - VPN into another Domain outside local domain SBS GODS.. we have sbs 2003 and are tring to connect to a clients office with sbs 2000. when i was connected at our location whit a computer with xp pro and a router and cable modem i was able to VPN into there office (sbs 2000) and see the server and the remote cpus but now i have put in a sbs 2003 and i can connect to there network but when i try to run the remote desktop i cant see any remote desktops or server....i able to ping them but cant see them or connect to them. also at there office they want to connect to one of there clients from there office sbs 2000 they can VPN into there clients office but they have the same problem they cant see any computers or the server.     - DNS Configuration Hi, Several of my customer's ISPs charge for DNS hosting. I would like to have my servers do it instead. I have customers with 12+ domain names and they will be charged a lot for this by their ISP. Rather than having network solutions point the domain name to the ISP's DNS it will be pointed to the SBS servers. I have several customers running SBS so I am hoping that I can use seperate servers for DNS redundancy.     - Health Monitor won't open I can no longer open it. I get no event log errors, it just won't open anymore. This is on an HP Proliant ML350 G3, I say this because I am wondering if it is a server model bug. Server has been running for 3 months and it used to open.     - SMTP We have a small network (25 users) all using win2k & a SBS 2k server, this connects to the outside world via a linux firewall, if the firewall (or the ADSL line) goes down any mail sent during this time ends up in the destination unreachable queue, understandable, however all subsequent outgoing mail ends up there also, & the only way to move them is to stop & restart the SMTP service, any ideas why this is happening? and more importantly how to stop from happening?     - Internet failed! I am at a client site where their Internet connection had failed. It seems the router was the fault but the "administrator" here tried to fix it by changing IP addresses of the second NIC and even adding a third NIC in. I have restored a system state but unfortunately the latest one is the night after the changes first started. Anyway, I have now removed the 3rd NIC, set up the second to how it should work, ran ICW again (no change to ISA or Exchange) but it aint working! If I ping an IP I get an instant faillure, not even a time out. I have a system state backup from August but this caused more problems that it fixed. However the Internet was working, email and everything else so I am sure the problem is configuration or something that needs manually adjusting. Any help woud be great! My weekend is dwindling!     - slow server connection hi.. situation: got a client with a sbs2k server. the server seems ok in most areas. thing is no one can connect if the server's nic is set to anything other than 10mps. even tho the card is 100/10. have replaced the cable. the one area that concerns me is that the server is kept in a cupboard with a large incoming power cable. but it is quite well shielded. Anyone got any pointers on anti-spam software that will operate effectively in the following set-up?: SBS2000 - Broadband Internet connection using 2 x NIC and Broadband Router Mail is downloaded via multiple POP3 mailboxes [5] Outgoing mail has a disclaimer added as per instructions on www.smallbizserver.net [so we have no SmallBusiness SMTP connector but two SMTP virtual servers configured] Trend C/S/M Suite in place Trialled Trend Scanmail eManager but felt it was average 'out of the box' and required a fair bit of ongoing configuration to operate reasonably. Have license for full Trend NeatSuite [only utilised the C/S/M elements thus far] - price was so close to C/S/M that it made sense really, especially if we end up going to SMTP mail further down the line. This is noted purely in case it may have any relevance. Ideally, we'd like something that links with Exchange [obviously] and would allow at least a degree of automatic 'white-listing' so that anyone our users send to would automatically be allowed in and never be tagged as spam. If it could automatically update its definitions and rules that would also be a benefit. We're not too concerned about outgoing content filtering as it's not really a concern in our particular set-up, so we don't particularly need something that is 'heavy' on that front.     - XP clients way slow after Win2k server made DC I have a peer-to-peer network of 10 users that consists of: Win2k SP2 Server - member server XP Pro SP1 clients DSL Router giving out IP info via DHCP (clients access the Internet directly through this router) I wanted to setup an actual Domain so ran dcpromo to convert the server to a Domain Controller. I took all the defaults as far as sole domain controller and forest info. I wasn't sure about the DNS naming convention so used a FQDN of lawfirm.company.com. DNS installed without incident and I re booted. No alerts and I began setting up user accounts and a logon script. I noticed that the full name of my server was now server01.lawfirm.company.com and started getting nervous ( I was expecting the server name to just remain server01 I was able to join a workstation to the domain but found that my logon script wouldn't map any drives and more distressing, access to shares and computer resources crawled to a standstill. I re-ran dcpromo, demoted the DC to a member server (lost my user accounts I knew about) and uninstalled DNS but after a reboot noticed that the server name now had a trailing dot after it's name. What's more, any user accounts (i.e. local admin) now had a dot before the name (.administrator etc.). My main questions are: How come my clients couldn't quickly access the DC? Is it a client DNS issue because they get their DNS info from the router? Is this a querying issue? Have I screwed up my server as far as the "." being in the user accounts and hostname id's? I really would like to have this network take advantage of an authenticated environment but am afraid to re-run dcpromo and deal with client issues again. If I re-run dcpromo, do I have to identify my DC as FQDN? How short of a name can I get away with? Thank you for seeing something I obviously didn't and your help.     - Hosting a website Got a few bugs in the system and need some help. First running: AD, DHCP,DNS, ISA, IIS, RAS and Exchange from SBS200 all behind a router. Router forwards certain port traffic to external interface. I have two websites setup in IIS. I did this because when I had the site in the wwwroot directory I lost the exchange instant messenger and Trend Micro Anti-virus managment console. So now, First is the local intranet handles Exchange instant messenger, Trend Micro Anti-virus and Exchange and listens on any unassigned port 80. The second is the public website and listens on the external interface IP address port 80. I'm able to view the public website by typing the the external interface ip address and the external internet address (www.mydomain.com). So the router is forwarding correctly and I have the DNS entry correct. I have ISA publishing rules for OWA and WWW. The WWW rule forwards the www.mydomain.com to the external interface IP address. The OWA forwards www.mydomain.com/exchange*, www.mydomain.com/exchweb*, and www.mydomain.com/public* to the internal interface IP address. The OWA rule also includes the external internet IP address, the external interface IP address and the internal interface IP address with the directories as well. The theory here was no matter what I typed domain name, public ip, external interface ip, internal interface ip with /exchange it would give the authentication window. PROBLEM1: I'm only able to access OWA via the internal interface IP address. Authentication window pops up and logs on fine. So somehow the ISA publishing rule isn't forwarding to the internal interface IP. Now, If I stop the public website and type in the public IP address I receive the standard page under construction and I'm able to send smtp mail again. If I type the public IP address + /exchange or www.mydomain.com/exchange I get the authentication window and I log on fine. ISA is listening for requests on the external interface IP address port 80. So I know that ISA is forwarding the information correctly and that I have the proper rules set up. PROBLEM2: How can I set my domain up to use my DNS server as the name server for both the site and mail? I have an Mailexchanger What changes do I need to make to the router, ISA, and the DNS server? I have a forward zone added for mydomain.com. And Host entries for DNS-internal interface IP address, MAIL-internal interface IP address, WWW-external ip address. Mail Exchanger- mail.mydomain.com. So I have valid internal ip address for dns.mydomain.com, mail.mydomain.com, www.mydomain.com. I think I'm close getting it all together, but I think I'm missing one or two steps.     - Domains We're adding SBS 2003 to an existing network. We've reached the Domain name part of the set-up, but can't add the server to an existing domain. We get the message that the netbios domain name already exists. Creating a new domain name isn't an option, since it would require us to reconfigure all of our workstations.     - HOSTs and LMHOSTS in SBS environment I am running a Win2k SBS server enviroment with 30 win2k/XP Pro computers. I have a problem with the newest ones added to the network, where connecting Outlook to Exchange seems to time out. It takes 3 retries before it logs on, and then its fine. Problem is, this also happens when connecting via a vpn to the server.
