OWA Login Problems
I have a slight problem with Outlook Web Access that I have not come across
before. I have a external member of staff who is trying to access his mail
on our server. The problem is that when he enters the address to the site he
is instantly confronted with "Error Access Denied", before he can even enter
his user credentials. All the other employees who connect remotely are able
to connect with no hassle. I have racked my brains on this one trying to see
what it could be on his machine but all settings like disable pop-ups etc
are set correctly.
If anyone is able to help it would be much appreciated.

Mail not fully shown in current view
Hi (Sorry if this is to the wrong group)
One of my users reported that her emails are not 'showing
up'. If I look in her inbox then I can see the mail icon
on the right hand side and nothing else!! Emails can be
opened and read. If I change the view to say unread
messages then it shows correctly. Some of her folders
display OK, while others only show the mail icon. We are
all patched up OK, and have a good AV; I am at a loss as
I have never seen this before. Any ideas please?

Shut down A/V, Exchange and even backup [all third party stuff] before
doing Windows Update on your servers. Consider as a best practice
rebooting your server before updating to ensure that and post patch
issue is truly a post patch issue. Remember, any issue caused by a
security bulletin is a free PSS call. Make sure you tell them you are a
SBSer to get to Texas and North Carolina.

A Trojan that exploits an Internet Explorer vulnerability

Way OT
Anyone know of a way to recover a sheet within an excel spreadsheet???
There is no backup of the actual file, it has been resaved to its original
file name, and I think I am out of luck.
Client accidentally deleted a very important sheet from within their xls
file, saved it, and now needs it back. Of course that was while at home
where they dont have ANY backup plan....gotta love those home users that
refuse to VPN in before working....
Anyway, I have used programs to recover deleted files and what not, was
curious if anyone has had experience/luck with something like this.

Has anyone implemented the winexit.scr from the 2k resource cd?
I have a 40 or so XP client network of SBS2K and would like to use this to
automatically logoff a user after 60min.
Anything I need to look out for? The only catch I see at the moment is
implementing keystokes (to emulate) closing/saving files before forcing the
logoff for each user. This is where I need help...MS doesnt have much, (kb
31499) from my quick KB search, about registry entries to do this. Will
autosave save the document if it hasnt been already saved once??? If so, ill
keep quiet and just use that, if not, its lame and wont do what I really
need it to do, which is save the document before forcing a logoff no matter
what.
I have looked into the third party products that do it, (sdpluspro, winoff)
and they work awesome. I really dont want to worry about customized installs
(or the fact that its a third party product) when I know its a simple
registry entry on the client machine that I can push out through policies.

Windows 98 Roaming Profile Problem
Hi All,
I am having a problem using windows 98 roaming profiles. Every so often
when logging in the user is presented with the desktop of the default user,
with the shortcuts to the home folders of the users who have logged in
displayed on the desktop along with the company folder. Some of these
shortcut are not able to be to removed and are shown as invalid in the
properties. Click on the folder for the logged will restore the desktop.

RRAS service fails to start /Event 20103
After reading and following the suggestions in Q299013 to
get RRAS started on my SBS2000 server, I've started
pulling out my (too sparse) hair. It is apparently unable
to load iprtrmgr.dll, though the dll is in the right path,
and all registry keys are per specs. The final
recommendation in that article is to remove and reinstall
TCP/IP. I'd just as soon pull out the rest of my hair!
Have any of you out there come across and resolved this
problem in a less-catastrophic way? I'm trying to set it
up for VPN access. I'm running the server as a DC with
Exchange 2000 Server, separate external and internal
NIC's, an IDSL router from our ISP, and 9 workstations.
What gets me is that I was running it successfully till a
few months ago, and I'm not aware of anything happening at
the server end (my client PC at home, at about that time,
suffered a fried I/O dept resulting from a power spike).

NTBackup stopped before completing
I was using NTBackup (via the wizard) to back up the server to a hard drive
(drives/files, exchange store, and Systat state). About half way through it
stopped the backup, reporting no more space available, eventhough there was
still 27GB free (and it had only use about 4GB out of an estimated 10GB of
needed storage). Any ideas what might be going on? (file size limit?)

Cumulative Patch for October 2003 froze SBS
Hey everyone,
I installed the Cumulative Patch for October 2003 on one of my servers, an
SBS2000, SP1 (still have SP3 on Win2k.) Well, the server froze right after
it was installed (via Windows Update.) I have not had a server freeze like
this in a long time. Has anyone experienced the problem. First freeze in six
months. I don't know if the patch installed but I checked afterwards and it
did install. I am pretty pissed off at this point.

Another curly one - we have a client that uses the Fax server on the SBS2000
box to send lots and lots of faces out, except it drops them off after 2
months.

2 NIC Setup for SBS - Customer Reasons Why?
I have quite a number of installations with SBS2000 now and after a
disasterous first try in 2001, all since have been with the
"recommended" two NIC solution (I also use a hardware firewall as
well, ususally just a basic router with some port forwarding).
Anyway, I recently encoutered a customer situation where I needed to
"justify" why setup the SBS box as the "gateway" to the world, while I
already had a "firewall"/router. "Why pass all that traffic through
the server?" was the question I got from this person over and over.
I did the security aspect, with NAT within a NAT.
I did the proxy cache for speed aspect.
I did the ISA Server allowing packet filtering and reporting.
"What if people still needed to use the internet if the server goes
down was another" - Now on that one I tried to keep a straight face
and told him that I don't think that will be a problem, and if it is,
keeping your people on the web is the least of your problems....
What I am asking from all of you "experts"...Is what would have been
your top reasons (Customer reasons - not too technical now
people...they have to understand it remember....)
Here's the rules....It has to be in an elevator format...if the reason
takes longer than two minutes to explain, it doesn't count....hehehehe

License Manager
Hi! Another event log error.

I believe all my licenses are correct. The error window informs to search
in the License Manager from Administrator Tools. When I try to do this, it
says it's not available for SBS.
I can go to the server on the Administrators Console and hit help (I think
it was help), anyway it said we have 35 licenses which is correct.
What license could it be referring to?
I've been trying to get VPN or TS connections going. We do have 5 TS
licenses, but how do I know what license it is referring to.
Do I sound confused? I am. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi! My server's system log is being overrun with EventID 420/421 for
NNTPSVC. It's about a pickup report. I assume it also has something to do
with me not being able to access this newsgroup from the office.
Any ideas?

Cannot Access Exchange Server
Hi,
We have recently had a few problems with MSExchange
logins. When trying to access Outlook on certain
workstations it just times-out and cannot access mailbox.
Error say 'server is unavailable' appears, giving options

My Exchange cannot send mail to some domain

Recent I found I could not send the e-mail to one of the domain and get the
following error reply:
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server.

server.domain.internal is my server's internal FQDN, which is differ from
the external FQDN. How can I fix the problem and at the same time I need to
separate the internal / external DNS namespace? Name servers are located in
ISP.
I have search Google and found the cause of the problem but there was no
solution about it.

Disk is full
When I tried to open any of the consoles I get a message
that the disk is full. It is not the exchange causing the
problem. I have moved exchange mdbdata to there own hard
drive.

Client ODBC and Enterprise Manager fail to connect.
I am setting up a migration upgrade from SBS 4.5 to 2000.
On our current server, I am running Win NT 4.0 and SQL
Server 2000 without problems. On a seperate switch, I
have set up a new server with SBS 2000 running SQL Server
2000 and cannot get a client computer to connect to the
the SQL server database using Enterprise Manager.
Enterprise Manager works fine on the server console.
ODBC connections fail in the same manner giving an ODBC
Timeout error.
Server Connection is set to use TCP/IP on port 1433,
clients are set to use TCP/IP and dynamic port acquisition.
Client logs in to server without problems, and exchange
works fine too.
Any ideas on what could cause the communication problem?

My companies office burned to the ground and we borrowed some computers from a business partner of ours. One of the computers is a Dell with Windows 2000 Server, and we can' get in it. Block the downloading of certain files
Where would I need to go in my SBS2K to set it so that my
users are not allowed to download .exe files? I have set
my Trend Office Scan for Exchange to block certain
attachments, .exe's included. But I would like to block
users from going to the internet and not downloading
these files.

How to add a Domain management to a bunch of LAN-connected PCs ?
It's been NT3.51-days since I was asked to bring a Domain server into
an existing PC LAN, from scratch. My user has a couple dozen users
and a LAN with a small-business sdsl internet connection. The company
has just bought a SBS server and has asked me to do the setup. It's
up as a generic SBS server right now.
In my first test I was reminded that when a PC joins the domain and
the user gets a domain login he gets an entire new generic desktop and
credentials. All his investment in application setup and customization
is gone.
Is there some trick to import or retain the current setup for each
user as I go around ? The users do use what ever version fo Office
and Outlook that came with the PC when purchased. They do intend to
move onto the exchange server shortly.
I've een asked to make this a user PC lockdown site. How practical is
this today ? Until now I've always worked in an engineering
environemnt where the usered needed local control so I never tried it.
The user machines have lots of obscure industry-specific
applications installed on them, by hand. There are only a couple
of dozen machines, not enough to get into cloaning but enough
to make redoing by hand a pain.

Disaster Recovery Prep...
Hi,
I have almost finished installing a new SBS 2000 server for my first client
and so far so good. I have had a few problems along the way, which I have
managed to overcome with the help of Merv and Javier.
This morning I woke up thinking disaster recovery. What the hell would I do,

SBS 2000 Disaster Recovery
Hi,
I have almost finished installing a new SBS 2000 server for my first client
and so far so good. I have had a few problems along the way, which I have
managed to overcome with the help of Merv and Javier.
This morning I woke up thinking disaster recovery. What the hell would I do,
if the RAID crashed or someone nicked the server. (Heaven forbid) Does
happen though. Does anyone know of any hard and fast rules as to which files
are essential in the backup routine. I'm currently backing up the entire

Being the good system admin that I am, I spent all night applying the
patches Microsoft sent me via e-mail to my server. (Boy were there a lot!!)
For some reason now my server won't work. Can someone please walk me through
fixing it? : )

Why does Mapping ask for a password?
Hi, one of my applications refers to F: in many places. I need to map
F: to \\server\D$ which is where the application data now resides. I
assume D$ is the root of D: on the server.
When I attempt the map from Windows Explorer on my Win98 machines it
asks for a password before allowing the map. I tried leaving it blank
or putting in the one for the administrator. Neither works.
Do I have to do something to each user to allow them to map to D$.
Maybe make them part of a certain group on the server? Not sure here.
Just guessing. Anyone know?

Name resolution S.L.O.W. on TS pinging SBS2K
Good afternoon NG,
We have a Windows 2000 terminal server that works in conjunction with our
SBS2K server as per best practice that this NG recommends.
Has been working beautifully for ages then suddenly last week the users
reported slowness getting into Exchange from Outlook and other such
occurrences. Then an SQL application we have refused to connect.
A bit of experimenting with the DSN setup for the SQL application showed
that hardcoding the IP address of the SBS2K server fixed it. I thought
"a-ha!" a name resolution problem. Sure enough a ping on the TS would take
about 20 seconds but only if the user were logged in via remote desktop. On
the console no prolem. Here is gets trickier. If the Administrator or anyone
with membership of the Domain Admins group tries to resolve a name, also no
problem regardless of whether they are on the console or on the remote
desktop. All other workstations on the network are experiencing no problems
with resolving a name
This means it is all looking like a permissions problem on the TS. But I
have no idea of where to look. Is it policies from the SBS2K box? File
permissions on the TS? Permissions in DNS, WINS on the SBS2K box?
Anybody got any clues?

Windows 2000 SBS to Windows 2003 Server Migration - Success!
Hi all, after many days of research, which all turned out to be worthwhile
as we encountered each and every issue, we managed to do the migration from
Windows 2000 SBS to Windows 2003 Server.
Here is the plan we used, and all seemed to work perfectly:
Step1. Prepare AD for migration
1. Run adprep on the Small Business Server 2000 dc to prep forest and domain
for Windows Server 2003

2. Change Security Policy to Enable Computer and User Accounts to be trusted
for Delegation

Step2. Clean install Windows 2003 and promote Windows 2003 server to DC:
1. Install Windows 2003 server on the new server.
2. Run dcpromo.
3. Choose "Additional domain controller for an existing domain" option.
4. Enter network credentials to log on to SBS 2K server (typically
administrator)
5. Domain name should match current domain name and shouldn't need to be
changed
6. Directory services restore mode password is unique to each computer -
you may enter any password you want here.
7. Once AD is complete, reboot new DC
Step3. Make the new DC a global catalog server
1. Open AD Sites and Services
2. Expand Sites/Default First Site/Servers.
3. Select the new DC server and right click NTDS settings and select
properties.
4. On the General tab put a check mark in the Global Catalog check box and
then click OK.
Step4. Transfer FSMO roles:

controller using the below procedure:

Step5. Move DNS
1. Install DNS on new dc
2. Move DNS to new server using the below procedure:

Step6. Shut down old SBS server and remove from AD.
1. Open AD Users and Computers
2 .Expand your domain
3. Select Domain Controllers container
4. Select the old SBS 2K server object and delete it.
I also noticed that at this point it will also listed in AD Sites and
Services, you might need to remove it from there too.
Step7. Change IP on new DC to match old server
1. You might need to do this so all clients DNS server address received from
DHCP is correct.

Isa and Cisco
Hi, I have recently built an sbs2000 box and have a new
cisco 837 firewall/router/adsl modem.
I had a Cisco cna configure the firewall/router and
install cisco client vpn s/w on a client pc. When I try to
connect to the server it would appear that ISA is NATing
the connection and so the ip address expected by Cisco is
not correct. Is there a way to stop Isa NAT'ing the
connection.
2. Does anyone know what the sure fire disaster recovery
software will work with SBS 2000 that uses hardware raid 5.
I have heard Veritas works sometimes or Acronis , but not
sure what to buy.
Any help would be appreciated.

Admin login Active directory
for some reason i have rebooted my server and now it will
not accept my admin password for the domain. it tells me
i cant use any of the other passes or user names for the
domain either. did not make any changes just rebooting
it. tried safe mode and recovery but will not take any
pas or username, could some one help me with a way to
find out the pass or a way to change it. it will not let
me just log into the computer i have to log into the
domain, any help is greatly apriciated

After just solving an ADSL which started working without me knowing why the
server has started logging the following errors in the application log, they
never appears prior to the ADSL connection working.

Unable to download mail from mialbox on Exchange
I have been unable to download my mail from my exchange on SBS 2000 and am
getting the following error message:

Dynamic DNS.
Hello all,
Would someone assit in a step-by-step dynamic dns configuration? I have
made a valid attempt to "read" before asking; however, I am do not know what
I should point to where?
My setup is as follows:
SBS2000, 2 Nic, Dynamic IP from ISP (ADSL), Router (NetGear FVS318), and
public domain hosted at 3rd party (for ".com" business e-mail).
As far as I know, dynamic DNS requires me to point my public domain to the
Dynamic DNS Servers, but won't that cause trouble with my parked/hosted
e-mail?

Linksys Router
Please help, I have a linksys router at home and I use
my laptop to vpn back to the office running SBS2K, I did
some securtiy patches and updated the firmware on the
router and now the vpn does not work from my wireless
connection using the router BEFSR41. my vpn works fine
from my dial up but not using the router. I have a
WAP11 wireless router going through the cable/dsl
router. I dont know if the security patches or the
firmware had anything to do with it but it used to

I tried the reinstall option and no luck.
Have you tried rerun the Monitoring Configuration Wizard
and pick the
second option "Reinstall" to reset the monitoring features?

Is there away to have users assigned to the local

Or do I have to manually add each user on each machine to

Print Subsystem is unavailable
Hi all!
Server -> SBS 2000 SP 4.
Clients -> Windows 2000 Professiona
On friday, the users had problems printing. They printed
documents, but the documents were not printed.
As I was not on the enterprise, I told a person to go to
the server and to see if the printers exists.
After opening the Printers folder ( on the server ), there
were none printer installed. The only thing he coulded see
was the "Add Printer".
I told him to click on "Add Printer" to see what happens.
After he clicks, there appears an error message saying:

Printer operation cannot continue due to lack of
resources. The print subsystem is unavailable.

As everyone was very stressed to print, I told him to
restart the server.
I was looking on the event log, but didn't find anything
on this.
Maybe the Print Spooler Service has stopped and on the
restart it started automatically...
I would like to resolve this problem. If you have any
ideas/suggestions I would be very appreciated.
