We have benn trying to set up a VPN connection. We can VPN from a client PC within the domain and it connects OK. We can VPN out to a remote site and it also works. Remote VPN into the SBS 2003 machine never gets past the "Verifying username and password" dialog box.

We have stepped through KB 320 697 and 308 208 without any luck.

When we first try to install it, it says that RRAS can't find the default remote access policy. This error is followed by one saying that 80020007 can't find the specified file.

Can anyone shed some light on this ?

TIA,
Ian

Um, minor typo in the original message. It should be SBS 2000 not 2003...

SuperGumby,

Dual Nics. Dlink 500 Router/ADSL connection.
Surfing, Exchange all work fine.

Nics are 10.0.0.2 internal. WAN 192.168.0.2. Router has 192.168.0.1.

VPN set up with static pool of 192.168.1.240 through 192.168.1.254. This
range is in the LAT.

External IP-range should not be in the LAT.

Marina,

The external Nic IP and router IP are not in the LAT. The VPN static pool is
in the LAT. Thi is in accrodance with point 6 of KB 320 697

Irrespective of this, it fails between points 4 and 5 of the same KB
article. A dialog box appears saying RRAS can't find the
default remote access policy. This error is followed by one saying that
80020007 can't find the specified file.

I figure therefore it isn't being installed properly, and therefore won't
work correctly. I've searched through the Knowledge Base looking for these
errors, but no luck...

FWIW...

DSL-500 and PPTP:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&threadm=2Li6b.1601%244m6.392852%40wards.force9.net&rnum=2&prev=/groups%3Fhl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26q%3Ddlink%2Bdsl-500%2Bpptp%26sa%3DN%26tab%3Dwg

One poster claims to have called DLink (UK) in September 2003 and they said
that the router does not support PPTP forwarding and that you need to set up
the SBS server (2 NIC) in the DMZ.

And another post from June 2002 about this same issue...
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&threadm=e5oJf8uCCHA.2552%40tkmsftngp05&rnum=7&prev=/groups%3Fhl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26q%3Ddlink%2Bdsl-500%2Bpptp%26sa%3DN%26tab%3Dwg

May be a firmware upgrade by now, but you'll need to check with DLink.

Thanks. Yes, we had looked at that. The SBS is running SP4, so that should

Merv,

This looks quite likely. Apparently, the work around is to enter an address
into the NAT/DMZ area. To be honest, at this stage I am still unsure which
address needs to be added. External NIC, Internal NIC or even VPN range...

Thanks,

Ian

You put the external NIC of the SBS server in the DMZ. Basically, you're
bypassing the router for incoming VPN and knocking directly on the SBS
server external NIC. Might be better to get another router that will handle
the VPN trafffic forwarding (like a Netopia R910 or similar).

Merv,

Thanks. Will be trying it shortly. Yes, a better router would be nice, but
I'm not sure it is an option.....

SP 4 has the patches but it does not doe the edits for you. You have
to do the edits manually!

Merv,

Yes, it was the problem. Adding the external NIC to the DMZ has allowed the
VPN to connect successfully.

Neither NetMeeting nor Timbuktu can establish remote control sessions, but
we are still following the suggestions from Marina and Jim.

Thanks,
Ian
