I have Small Business Server 2000 with Exchange 2000 SP3. All client have
Outlook 2003 installed.

When i enable the "Out of Office Assistant" in Outlook 2003 and i send
myself an email from an external email account i do not get a Out of Office
reply. The email is received ok to the exchange mailbox.
What could be the problem?

Is this an issue with Exchange 2000 or the Client. I have tried the "Out of
Office Assistant" on two different clients both with no success.

Thanks
Brian

You need to enable it on the Server before this will work.

On the SBS Server, open Exchange System Manager
Browse to [yourdomain] > Global Settings > Internet Message Format
Select Default in the right-hand window and right-click - select Properties
from the Menu
On the Advanced tab, tick 'Allow Out of Office Responses'

Hope that helps,

David

Also, it only works once per "session" from each sender. IOW, if you enable
it on "John's" email, then test it from your account, you'll only get one
Out-Of-Office reply from John. If you test it twice, you won't get a
response the second time from that sender's account; if you turn
out-of-office off, then back on, you'll again get a single o-o-f. I mention
this because I spend a lot of time trying to figure out what what wrong
after I had turned this on and gotten one test reply but no more.

hi,

This is interesting for me because I've posted before asking abt
something similar but haven't gotten a conclusive explanation.

Unlike Brian's OOA scenario, I want to use OOA to do email
forwarding on demand - this is something that endusers can handle.

Let's say Peter will be out of town for a month. I want email sent
to Peter's email to be forwarded to a leave-cover as well as to
Peter's external POP email acct (which could be personal or a
corporate one). The rules are simple enuf to setup in Outlook2k3
and actually do work except that the OOA never gets out of the
LAN! The leave-cover (and internal email addr) do get the OOA
email, which in this case is not an alert but a forwarded copy of
email sent to Peter, but no external email will be delivered, incl.
email forwarded to Contacts (as defined in AD).

BTW, my scenario is on a SBS2k3 not SBS2k.

Any ideas?

TIA,
Eugene Tan

hi,

The one-ping response is a very practical thing actually.

If email were to arrive from a newsgroup and bounce back due
to a OOA msg and there were 2 or more subscribers with OOA
configured, the rest of the subscribers will quickly suffer from an
email storm and possibly DoS!

I was at first quite funny and soon very annoying and not funny to
see 2 servers playing ping-pong!
