Sobig linked to DDoS attacks on anti-spam sites
A senior anti-spam activist is calling on law
enforcement authorities to track down the
perpetrators behind a widespread and sustained
attack on anti-spam sites. The call, from Steve
Linford of Spamhaus, comes along with fresh
evidence that the assaults have been enabled
bythe infamous Sobig worm.

California spam law may face court challenge
When California Gov. Gray Davis signed one of the
nation's most sweeping antispam laws this week,
he didn't end a debate over how the proposal would
affect businesses in the richest, most technology-
savvy U.S. state. Davis merely shifted it from the
Sacramento statehouse--the scene of tense negotiations
among antispam activists, direct marketers and
technology companies--into the court system.

AND be productive.

Protecting company data from ex-employees
While companies are relatively accustomed to
requesting the return of building keys and ID cards
from departing employees, they are less vigilant
when it comes to electronic data. Can this lead
to problems? Yes! When employees are terminated
involuntarily, emotions can run high on both
sides of the table.

Californian anti-spam bill charges $1000 per email
A new Californian law targeting spam will be the
toughest in the US, with spam campaigns liable for
penalties of up to $1m. California Governor Gray
Davis said on Tuesday he would sign into law the
toughest measure in the United States to crack
down on "spam,'' the unsolicited email this is
increasingly clogging electronic mail boxes.

Report: Lenders miss most ID theft
ID theft has grown so far, so fast, because financial
institutions and other lenders have missed it. A massive
study of 200 million new credit card, checking account
and cell phone accounts opened during 2001 ? with
participants like Citibank, Dell, Bank of America,
and T-mobile ? shows that 7 out of 8 identity thefts
are mis-categorized as simple credit losses by lenders.

New era of malware requires new virus prevention solutions
Victims of the Lovsan/Blaster virus outbreak already
know that simply installing an anti-virus application
is no longer enough to protect against increasingly
complex virus hybrids designed to wreak havoc on
workstations and servers across the globe.?Today's
virus writers are more than script kiddies looking
to make a name for themselves with a piece of Visual
Basic code,? says Ryan Price, CEO of Y3K Group,
South African provider of content security solutions.
?They now create hybrid worms that use a variety
of mechanisms to replicate, combining excellent
programming skills with innovative hacker
techniques to cause mayhem.?

"Don't lose sight of security. Security is a state of being,
not a state of budget. He with the most firewalls still does
not win. Put down that honeypot and keep up to date on your patches.
Demand better security from vendors and hold them responsible.
Use what you have, and make sure you know how to use it properly
and effectively."
