I've been managing a small SBS2000 network for the past two years but so far
have not had to make any configuration changes until now (someone else set
it up originally). I want to replace an older workstation (one with Windows
98SE) with a newer XP Pro machine.

I installed XP Pro on the new machine (it got a HD upgrade) and gave it the
same name as the one it's to replace. I also set up some local user
accounts (which I'm not sure was necessary). I'm not sure what to do next
though, and so far I have not tried connecting it the network.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Pat

Thanks Javier.

One question though. The link looks like it decribes the process when a new
client is being added. If an existing client is being replaced (one that
already exists on the server) is it still the same process? I would like
set it up the new machine the same as the old (i.e. same drive mappings,
user profiles, etc).

Thanks for you help.

Pat

That might be difficult because XP and 98 profiles are not compatible. It
really depends on how your stuff is set up (i.e. if you have a logon script
that maps Y drive then it should run on both PCs, but if it was done in the
Win9x machine manually then it will not).

Keep in mind, Win9x machines do not join the domain. If you look at
AD/computers, you will not see Win9x machines. (I believe this from my
past experience. But, my memory concerning Win9x stuff is a little
fuzzy. Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Also, the one thing that article did not cover is setting up a Domain
user account on the machine. After the computer joins the domain, you
should go to My Computer, Properties, Network Ident Tab and choose
Network ID. Follow the prompts to add a domain user. When prompted for
permissions, give him admin rights. (It's just for the local machine.)
If the user already exists, as in this case, it will just give him admin
rights on the local machine and will not create a new user. (Which is
what you want.)

Also, other than joining the client to the domain, the other stuff in
the Microsoft article is optional. For instance, I don't use modem
sharing or the fax service. Outlook gets installed when I install MS
Office. The only thing I do is install the Firewall client.

In article <OMffMJ3wEHA.384@tk2msftngp13.phx.gbl>, pat@reemoovethismp-
m.com says...
