sorry to post yet another question on the same issues, but i have much more
information since yestsrdays post.
these probolems all coinceded with a virus being detected and deleted on the
server. I now notice a programme "mIRC" has installed its-self on the
server. and i am unablr to uninstall it via add remove programmes

none of the client computers can print to any network printer, the error
message is "unable to connect"
on trying to open the printer properties the error message is "the print
subsystem is unavailable"
none of the client computers can browse the network. the error message is "
the server is not configured for transactions"

the server can print to any network printer without problem, the exchange
and internet are also ok.
there seems to be a lot of internet activity at the server, but nothing is
apparently using it.
Any help genuinely apreciated
Andrew

ps if i restored the system state from backup would this help?
