The DNS sets it to: 192.168.16.45
And ofcourse there is NO reply
After a while the system corrects itself but after some
more time it happens AGAIN
Due to this Outlook can not be used because the Exhchange

I used CD2 to install SQL2000 on a test machine in our

I installed SQL2000 and Enterprise Manager etc...all
seemed to go well, until I received an error message when
adding more MB to a Primary Filegroup:

Question: Does SQL2000 that gets shipped with SBS2000
work with large amounts of data? The error message told
me that the version of SQL2000 I am running cannot
accomodate greater than 3GB per database. I did a quick
scan in google, and it seems that this is the
case...SQL2000 on SBS2000 is a demo or low level version.
Is the above true??

BIG Exchange issue i think!
I have taken over from an administrator who has moved on from servicing this
client and left me with a nightmare! Standard SBS config with 5 clients all
XP Pro. Apparently the old admin guy was doing some remote admin work and
decided to upgrade trend, and then BANG no exchange. I have had a look at
the server and found that in exchange system management there are no servers
shown or in the admin console. Also missing is the default m drive that's
created when installing SBS exchange. I have checked out the knowledge base
and found little info but I have ran DomainPrep again in case it was
connected with this. DomainPrep executed and ran successfully but failed to
re-instate anything. Has anyone come across this before? and what can i do?

Exchange Problem
A customer is having a problem with Exchange... Detailes follow:
1. SBS 2000 is an upgrade from 4.5
2. Configured DNS with forwarders.
3. Reviewed all TCP/IP settings to standard configuration.
4. Setup "Fully Qualified Domain Name" on advanced properties of SMTP
Virtual Server to be the same as the ISP's MX record. Changed from spi.local
to mail.domain.com
5. Ran Internet Connection Wizard.
6. Port forwarded TCP Port 25 to our server in the Router's config.
7. Verified that Port 25 is open.
8. Called ISP and had them change the MX Record.
9. ISP sent a test email to a user and verified he received the email.
10. Changed a users' email config to work off of Exchange.
11. Started Import of pst file. (This is where the problem starts).
a. After running for some time it error'd out with "Operation Failed".
b. I noticed that the inbox now had new messages but other subfolders
were blank!
c. Tried the import again. and had the same error except now there is
only the message that the ISP sent in the Inbox!
d. Tried to delete that message and received "The item could not be
deleted. It was either moved or already deleted, or access was denied"
e. Tried import on another user and received the same message and
symptom.
Finally, I noticed that we could send messages using Telnet and messages
were coming in but were being placed in the (Local Delivery) Queue. They
would never be routed to the correct location. Tried deleting the messages
from the queue and stopping and restarting SMTP, Exchange and finally the
Server. Any new messages would stay in the Local Delivery Queue and never be
processed. A look at the App log gave no indication there was a problem.
Help!

Welchia//Nachi
Any help appreciated..
SBS 2000 with ISA got infected with the Welchia/Nachi worm when some clown

Needless to say the server was not patched, and they noticed an increase in
the uploads since (TFTPD). I have since removed it by using the tool and
checking out the registry and open ports etc.
My question is that I tried to load the patch MS03-026 several times and it
goes through the motions and restarts, but it's not listed in the add/remove

New post, problem re-defined
The exact symptoms are:
If the internet line is connected, the server runs barely
at all with max cpu usage. If I disconnect the internet,
after about fifteen minutes the server is back to normal
speed. If I later try to re-connect the internet, the
thing slows to a crawl again.
I don't see any viruses in the process list, but DLLHost
is using the most cpu cycles, it may be getting commands
from a hijacked process or it may be hijacked itself.
I don't have antivirus on this box and I can't get the
internet to work long enough for an online scan.

NEWBIE: SBS2000 XP clients cant see printers
Hi All,
I have just upgraded from an old sever running SBS4.5 to a new Dell server

attached to an XP client and set for sharing then other XP clients cant see
it or print to it. The server cant see the printers either. If the printer
is on a W98 client then the printer can be seen by all XP clients and the
server. (On the old SBS4.5 system there was no problem). I have restarted
the server and XP PCs and reinstalled the printers all to no avail.
I am sure its some security/permission thing but don't understand why.

Quick ?
I am in the process of reinstalling a fresh copy of sbs. I now have 'A'
server that is a complete copy of the current production one 'B'. After I
pull all the files and such off of server 'b' and put them onto the new
server 'A' and take down 'b'. Reformat 'B' and do it all over again.
So then I will have the exact oppositve of what I had before. 'B' will be
fresh server and 'A' will be production.
Now the whole purpose of this is to reformat the 'A'(which has 100x better
hardware) without downtime.
Ok so once I have the basic member server 2000 on 'A' I am going to dcpromo
it to pull the stuff off the 'B' and then go thought the rest of the sbs
setup thus being exact like I started with. But my question is which I am
finished with the ''B' do I have to do anything special other than jsut turn
it off and erase the computer name out of AD. Being that it is a SBS2000
server I wont be able to demote it like a normal 2000 server right?

Ok,
I have a SBS server with 4 machines connected to it, they can access

I have plugged the laptop it into other networks (including mine at

tried various network cables on the SBS network that I know work and
it still can not even get an IP or pint anything. Both lights are lit

I have also tried setting the IP manualy and it then can not
successfuly ping anything.

POP3 Help

Glad I did NOT buy Software Assurance for SBS!
I recall having a discussion on the value of buying Assurance before the
deadline last year.
The question was, "would I be sure to save money when the 2003 server came
out?" The answer was a definite "maybe". It appears from the online data
that Microsoft reports for this company, that the Assurance I would have
bought would have ended a few months ago. Thus I would be faced with
renewing it to allow me to get the 2003 upgrade. I would have thus paid as
much as an off the shelf copy of SBS.
Now we find that the list price for SBS 2003 has been "slashed".
Does this mean that anyone who paid into the program has just lost their
"investment"?

Creating an image of an SBS2000 server
Hello to all.
There was an excellent thread in this newsgroup about a month ago -
discussing the issues/problems with restoring an SBS2000 server from a prior
tape backup (after a severe hard disk failure).
In summary, the root of the problems seems to be related to registry
references to Short File Names (SFNs). The problems were/are not specific to
SBS, but were exaggerated because of many programs being installed in
C:\Program Files\Microsoft XXXXX.
Several people suggested that imaging/cloning the server was the only way to
really be able to recover a server. Today I called Symantec Reseller
Presales Support. I was told by several different people that the Corporate
Edition and Retail Edition of Ghost is "not supported" for Servers, and that
RAIDs were "not supported". They referred me to the following articles:
Cloning a Windows NT or Windows 2000 Server (Document ID 1999012108164025)
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ghost.nsf/8477deaaaafc102288256b1e00704619/51809cb4473378958825670000596a6a?OpenDocument&prod=Symantec%20Ghost&ver=7.5&src=ent&pcode=symghost&dtype=corp&svy=&prev=&miniver=symghost_75
Ghost compatibility with RAID (Document ID 1999010613522725)
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ghost.nsf/docid/1999010613522725?Open&src=ent&docid=1999012108164025&nsf=ghost.nsf&view=8477deaaaafc102288256b1e00704619&dtype=corp&prod=Symantec%20Ghost&ver=7.5&osv=&osv_lvl=
Some of the issues discussed in these articles seems to be related to
creating one image - and trying to push it to multiple servers. That is not
my desired use of the software. I simply want to be able to clone the server
so that I can restore it in case of severe hardware failure.
I was wondering if anyone could comment on their use of Ghost (corporate or
retail) to clone and then restore an SBS2000 Server. Did it work okay? Any
issues?
Also, I was wondering if anyone could comment on their use of Ghost
(corporate or retail) when there was a hardware RAID in place?
Thanks in advance for the thoughts/comments.

Hi everyone. Thanks for the responses.
Well, I tried changing from local system account to "administrator", with the password. I stopped

I think I'll uninstall and re-install and see if that makes it magically disappear. Like I mentioned before,
I never had any issues with the SBS 4.5 and InoculateIT 6.0, so perhaps that is a bad .ini file or something...

Mine did that for a while between SP3 and SP4. Finally either SP4 or a recent hotfix cleared it up. What SP are you on?

Those who do not have access to the OU's in question have
noticed that the Global address book omitts those people

Is there anyway to resolve this or is this part of the

Deleting Viruses before it reaches the users mailbox? [sobig.worm issue]
After starting with a set of extension to be filters out of emails with
attachments *.exe, *.scr, *.pif, *.vbs & *.js and the rules worked after
testing with an email containg such an attachment.
I now find that most all the Exchange components have gone down and cannot
be started backup again.
I did add more extension to ISA SMTP filter rule to delete those attchments,
thats all.
Can't explain why the SMTP, Pops IMAP4 NNTP, MS ROuting engine, and other
components now have stopped.
Restarting these doesn't do anything.
Can pick up any email from exchange mailboxes anymore.
I've gone back to the ISA SMTP Filter and noticed the following, see
attached image:
Had upto 20 exclusion in the list of attachment extension to be deleted the
list now shows only 14, but their now marked with a red error symbol with a
cross.
Could this be the cause of the problems and exchange not starting up.
Or could it be an issue with ISA?
What can I do!
All that was done was add the extension to the filter.
/me sighs
and of course *.exe files also to be added to the rule as a possible way to
carry viruses.

to migrate to Microsoft SBS 2000 & Exchange 2000. Has
anybody done this and know the some of the gotcha's I
might run into. Are there any know whitepapers on this?
Most of all, the mail conversion will be my biggest
concern. I have not worked with Exchange before (or
Groupwise either, my experience has been in Lotus Notes).
Any help would be much appreciated.

Importing contacts into Active Directory
I am running Exchange 2000 on a SBS. I have a lot of contacts in a .pst
file that I want to export into Active Directory so that I can use them in
Exchange.
Can anyone suggest the easiest way to do this?
Thanks

Store.exe @ 100% CPU Usage
Hi, we have an SBS 2000 server and the Store.exe is using 100% cpu. I have
done a virus scan and all is clear, i have put on the blaster fix before it
hit, there are no emails waiting to go out.
Any ideas ?

Problems...
I have a problem which is making me very annoyed. This
all started when I upgraded SBS2000 client's IEs from 5.5
to 6 running Windows Update.
This is more of an IE problem, but as I am running SBS
2000 and have not had a response from the Internet
Explorer forum, I thought I would try this one.
A few clients access a website (secure and confidential)
that is highly dependant upon Java. They could access the
site with no problems in IE 5.5 but when I installed IE
6.0 (SP1) they only saw a blank screen. The site uses
Oracle forms, and I managed to download the JInitiator (or
something) from the same site to make the client see the
applet...but this did not work.
Instead, I only get a "Applet Loading..." in the middle of
the screen and at the footer: Exception: SSL handshake
failed: SSLProtocolErr.
The site is run through SSL but I do not understand what
this error is.
Furthermore, I tried downloading the JAva plugin as
someone suggested that Microsoft have taken out Sun's Java
from IE6. I downloaded a .exe file, but when I run this
on the client I keep getting 1305 errors...the install
procedure cannot see the www.java.com site for an update.
I am totally lost and do not know what to do. What seemed
a good idea to upgrade the clients to IE6 and patch their
machines for vulnarabilities from windowsupdate is proving
to be a problem.
Please help!!!
