Charles,
I recently went through a similar situation and used the following procedure
to preserve the users client settings. I hear that SBS 2003 has incorporated
an option to automatically preserve client user profiles at the first log
on. Perhaps, someting to consider if you haven't obtained SBS yet:
browse to the <Windows XP CD>\Support\Tools directory, there is a program
called Fastwiz.exe. This tool will allow you to export an existing user
profile and import that profile back into a different profile (essentially
replacing one profile with another). The tool will work for Windows
95/98/2000/XP client machines. It will not work if you are using roaming
profiles. It only works if the profiles (domain or local) are stored on the
local client machine. The tool can be used to export more than just the
profile. It can also export all of the files such as those contained in the
My Documents folder for a user.
Here are the steps you would go through to use this tool.
Export a current profile
==================
1) Log on to the local client machine with the user account of a person
whose profile you want to export.
2) Run the fastwiz.exe program from the Windows XP CD.
3) On the Welcome to the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard screen, click
Next.
4) Choose the option "Old Computer" and then click Next.
5) On the transfer method screen, click "Other" and then specify a location
on the hard drive where you want to store the exported profile. (ie. C:\Bobs
Profile). then click Next.
6) On the "What do you want to transfer screen" click "Both Files and
settings", then click Next.
7) When the export completes, click Finish, then log off of the user.
Import a backed up profile into a new profile
===================================
1) Log on to the local client machine with the domain user account.
2) Run the fastwiz.exe program from the Windows XP CD.
3) On the Welcome to the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard screen, click
Next.
4) Choose the option "New Computer" and then click Next.
5) Choose the option, "I don't need the Wizard disk. I have already
collected my files and settings from my old computer." Then click Next.
6) On the "Where are the files and settings?" screen, click "Other", then
type in the location where you stored the backed up profile. (ie. C:\Bobs
Profile). Choose this folder, then click Next to continue.
7) When the import is complete, it will require you to log off and log back
on for all of the profile settings to complete. Do this now.
8) The import should now be complete and the domain user's profile will be
using the old local user profile.
Good luck
