As we are rolling out XP Pro and replacing Windows 98, printing to labels
and forms are getting out of alignment. Both networks are SBS 2000, but I
doubt it is a network issue, probably something weird about XP

Different apps and printers are doing the same thing, everything was fine in
Windows 98, now with XP extra blank lines are inserted throwing off the
alignment on labels and forms. Even printing to a file with the
generic/text only printer gives misalligned results.

The printers are both tractor fed dot matrix, one is a panasonic the other
is an oki. One app is custom the other is out of a box.

No problems until XP Pro was used, now we can't print labels and forms.

Any ideas?
Thanx, Ron

I had a *weird* thing like that happen to me the other day. I
reconfigured a client's Inet connection from a radio link (SSR) to ADSL.
About the first thing I did when I plugged in the ADSL router was turn
off the DHCP server in it.

Unfortunately, it was too late.

It was not until later that day that users reported strange things
happenning (print jobs would not go to the correct tray, n' stuff like
that). I came in and noted that a machine I was on would not connect to
the domain. After a frustrated hour - I went to the server and started
the SBS Admin Console (for no particular reason). I spotted that down
the bottom the DHCP server was STOPPED.

I checked the event logs, and unbelievable, MS have setup SBS (or
Server) so that if another DHCP server is found on the network, it will
give up it's own (stop it).

Now that's not like Microsoft is it!!! - LOL.

Anways, restarted the DHCP server on the Server and it was ops normal.

Why or how it could affect print jobs like it did (it certainly appeared
to be the cause, given the smyptoms and upon correction, symptoms
dissapeared) - is beyond me.

I hate to ask the obvious, but are you using the XP printer drivers? Also,
are the apps the same? For example, were you using Office 97 or 2000 on the
9x PCs, but now you're on Office XP or 2003? If drivers, please try the XP
versions, especially of Oki and Panasonic offer their own drivers and
they're more recent than the built-in XP drivers. If there's an app
difference, you may have to adjust the label settings within the app to get
the results you're looking for.

I will add that PCL5e is not PCL6 is not PS. I have some applications
that print great with PCL5e but mess up with PCL6. PS often works. I
know that this is not relevant to a dot matrix other than the fact
that different drivers can make a huge difference printing. Oh, I was
seconding Dave's comments.

Yes, we are using the XP drivers. I am concentrating on the oki for now, I
have checked their web site, they don't have XP drivers, they only go up to
Win 2000.

It is the same app and the same printer, the only thing changed is that we
are now using a XP machine instead of a Win 98 machine.

Could XP be using a different default font that would give different
results?
