I attemted a migration on Saturday from SBS4.5 to SBS2003. The user and
group migration seemed to go ok. However, when I loaded the exchange
migration wizard I received a message similar to :

"Unable to migrate 90 of 94 mailboxes due to ambiguous ownership."

I called it quits at that points since I figured 5% success rate
probably wouldn't get me the promotion I have been looking for.

I have done some web research and it appears this has something to do
with the fact that most of my users have multiple email boxes that are
all assoicated with their NT Domain user account. I have read that if
I created a unique domain account for each mailbox I could make the
migration work. However, with the large number of mailboxes involved
that is not a very attract alternative.

Any Ideas?

Dale

It should not be needed to create useraccounts to get those mailboxes
migrated. All mailboxes except the administrators can be migrated. I've done
this myself with some mailboxes that were not associated with any user at
all, so maybe there is your problem.

Can you please be more specific as to where you think my problem lies?

Are you suggesting I disassociate all my mailboxes with user accounts?

Hi Dale,

Do you have all mailboxes associated with useraccounts? On SBS 4.5 I had a
few mailboxes on 'their own' so to speak, thus not associated with any user
at all. Those were shared mailboxes. When I migrated to SBS 2k3, they
migrated just like that.
In Exchange 2000 and 2003 you can only have 1 mailbox per user, so if you do
have the shared mailboxes associated with users that already have their own,
how about disassociating and try again?

OK,

So I could try disassociating the mailboxes from their users and then
migrating.

At that point, is it difficult to give the user appropriate user access
to their account again once I am in exchange 2003 land? Or could I have
this reconfigured already in exchange 5.5 ?

Hi Dale,

That's what I should try, yes. In 2003 you can just share that mailbox and
give the appropiate users access (send as and receive as). Those permissions
don't get transferred.

Dale

Well, it looks like XCH 5.5 under SBS requires a primary NT Account for
each mailbox. Therefore, it appears my only choices is go through all
90 some mailboxes and create unique NT users for each one and go through
the migration, then figure out how the AD users will have access to them.

Lotsa fun.

Hi Dale,

No, Exchange 5.5 does not require that primary account. You can create a
mailbox in Exchange without having a primary account associated with it.
