    - SBS 2003 - Fault Tolerance I have an issue with a server running SBS2003 std edition, and wonder if anyone has any constructive advice: The server is in use and developed a physical problem with hard drive number 1, (a 3 partitioned system mirror drive) I replaced this drive and attempted to re-build the mirror from the default operating system drive number 0, it re- built 2 out of 3, but failed to mirror the actual operating system partition. Further investigation showed the existing drive number 0, to contain a bad block, presumably preventing the re-sync. The most recent and now only complete system backup also failed, rendering it useless, which is what alerted me to the condition. Can anyone see a way for me to now replace the existing drive 0 and restore the system back to a fault tolerant condition without having to resort to a complete operating system re-install.     - SBS 2000 SMTP Connector to smarthost and back We have a SBS 2K with Exchange and are using its POP3 Connector to download our email from our ISP and route to the relevant mailbox/user. We have recently bought GFI MailSecurity and MailEssentials in an attempt to filter out spam and viruses and prevent them from ever reaching our users. In order to do this, i need to install GFI MailSecurity on a different server to our SBS/Exchange and have it act as a smarthost and be the first machine to receive our email from our ISP. I have managed to setup a different server as a smarthost, but i'm wondering how i go about initially fetching our ISP email to our relay server in order for MailSec to do its work? In the GFI manual (available at http://support.gfi.com/manuals/en/msec8/msec8manual-1-21.html) it says about setting up an SMTP Connector and pointing the MX record of our domain to the mail relay server. If i setup an SMTP Connector on our SBS Exchange server, will this result in it downloading our ISP email via its POP3 connector and then forward it to our relay server and eventually be bounced back to our Exchange server (via the fact i've set it up as a smarthost in its IIS SMTP settings). I'm concerned that it might cause an infinite loop, and emails will just bounce between the two and i'm not sure how or even if i need to change our DNS MX record.     - Changing IP Reservations in SBS 2000 Hi there We currently run only ONE server which is DC (AD-Domain Controller, DHCP, DNS, WINS, Print, Application, File, BackupServer etc) We currently use 10.0.0.x range for our intranet purposes. I want to change the IP addressing pool from 10.0.p.q range to 10.0.r.s. This is because the octect that is reserved for the server (main Server which is DHCP, DNS, DC, IIS and Print server) is 10.0.0.1. And i'm not comfortable with this IP address for security reasons as it is the first octect in the 10.0.0.x block and anyone (a potential hacker can have his first guess corrrect) I was wondering if i can change the IP address for the server to say 10.0.230.20 and change the name of the server from say bingo to complexBingo and then update any references to the old server name from client machines to new one (any shortcuts to \\bingo to \\complexBingo for example) would be enough???     - More than 50 users - SBS 2000 Exactly what happens when you exceed the maximum number of users supported by SBS? We are currently running SBS 2000 and I think we are over the limit. However, everyone seems to be able to login and there doesnt' seem to be any problems. We actually have only 45 licenses. Please don't post you "opinion" of what you think should happen.     - Upgrading to SBS2003 I am wanting to upgrade our SBS2000 server to SBS2003 (software assurance). I would like to completely low away the 'C' drive on the server and start from scratch. Is there any problems with doing this? I have checked to ensrethat our variou software packages (A/V, B/U, etc.) will notneedto be changed when I do this.     - Printer going Off Line by itself I have a Toshiba EStudio810 series digital photocopier that is setup to print via our small business server. I've set it up as shared and added it to the printers available to all pc's and all test prints were successful. Permissions have been set up correctly too. The printer keeps going offline !!! I've checked the event log and there doesn't appear to be anything to suggest why this is happening. The printer port is setup properly on a local TCP/IP and tests from the server work fine too.     - SBS RAS connexion blocked!? I have a SBS with RRAS - I configured a persistent connexion wich works fine except that from time to time it stops to work (I think) - because I try to ping and to connect to it when the connection starts, and after a period of no tranfer on it I try again to ping and to connect - and is not working! Customer would like to support a conference room with a seperate IP network address from the regular internal LAN address, and only let that LAN acquire DHCP addresses for internet access only. No access to the internal LAN. Conference room would have a hub allowing multiple connections. SBS2000 internal lan: 192.168.11.x conference room lan: 172.16.11.x (for example) SBS 2000 server has 2 NICs, currently one is diabled. SBS 2000 server is connected to a hardware router for internet access. Question: Should I be able to create a second scope in DHCP, assign a fixed IP to the 2nd NIC (conference room connection), and have SBS2000 route traffic from the conference room to the internet?     - Setting up SBS 2000 w/SonicWall Firewall VPN, Need help. Hello All, Thanks again to Marina Roos SBS-MVP for helping me figure out my exchange 2000 dilema. We recently purchased sonicwall firewall SOHO3 10 user w/ 5 VPN connections. Here is scenerio, I'm at home using DSL connection. I install Sonicwalls VPN software, input user, password, IP, etc., and presto! I now have a secure pipe from my home to the sonicwall firewall at work...thats it. I can get to my firewall, woopty doo. What now? How do I get files off of the server? My objective is for regular users, not just admin to be able to access files from home. I'm not looking to do remote desktop, just something like ftp, very simple. I'm not sure what to do or where to start, I've heard that NATing may be a problem because its not incorporated into server2000's TCP/IP stack. I need to see this through. I do have tech support for the Sonicwall firewall, but it seems like they will only help me get from home to the firewall.     - SBS as time server I have 2 networks: first - SBS 2k - domain controller second - 2 servers win2K . The win2k server is time syncronized with an external source (GPS clock). I want to syncronize now the other servers with the SBS. How can I do that? I tried the net time / setsntp: ip_of_SBS but it's not working.     - SOT: Virus notifications. Has anybody proposed a movement to establish NOT ENABLING EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS OF INFECTION TO SENDERS as a 'best practice'? I for one am fed up to my ears of dealing with explaining and re-explaining to users that WE didn't send any viruses out. I think it has been pretty well established that during a major outbreak these 'friendly' notifications do little more than help clog up the already taxed internet, and since 100% of the notifications I have received are due to spoofed addresses, they are literally pointless and a waste of resources. Now I'm sure I could set up some form of filter that I'd have to tweak for the rest of my life to just drop these types of messages, but I would like to see "Disable email notification to sender" as a documented Best Practice.     - Encoding in email I have users who send attachments to clients. The clients edit the attachment and send back. When we receive the email, we do not get the attachment, but we get a large email with a bunch of "garbage" at the bottom. My guess is that the "garbage" is the encoding of the attachment.     - ISA Server not allowing website traffic I am getting a 403 error when trying to access my website.. I have looked through the ISA server settings, they are all default, my ISP settings are the same as they always have been, my static ip is set, everything is working but I cannot access my website. I have tried resetting the permissions on the actual directory, I have tried resetting the permissions through IIS, I have reset my ICW settings, I cant seem to get through to the server.. Also, when it happens, we tried pinging three things: The static ip address of the server - Gives 4 replies with nothing lost The static ip address with 3389 on the end of it - Gives bad parameter The servers local nic address 10.0.0.1 - Gives a loss of data The servername - Gives could not find server xxxxx Any help that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.     - Exchange e-mail problem Hi all, I posted this earlier under the title badmail which was probably off putting. We are having a problem receiving e-mail fron a specific sender. All e-mails from this sender are coming through to Exchange which then treats them as spam and puts them in the Badmail folder.     - DCPROMO.EXE, terminal Server, SQL, Exchange We have a SBS2000 server on a network with two non MS servers. It was a default install with the SBS box being a domain controller etc etc. We are moving certain services off of the SBS box for performance benefits etc. The question is, first off, can we use DCPROMO.exe to demote the server to a Standalone server and remove active directory? Am I correct in assuming that exchange does not require Active Directory to function, will SQL still function, and will Terminal Server still function? Terminal Server licensing? etc. We simply want to use as a Terminal Services server, run a SQL database and exchange no directory services. Any issues? Thanks for your assistance.     - Clients with slow Internet in SBS2003 I have a client with a brand new Win SBS2003 "STANDARD" Server connected to DSL. The Internet access run as expected on the server....FAST!...but the clients machines (3 -XP & 1 -ME) have very very slow Internet. The public DNS on the server is set to UUNET's DNS Servers, and the clients point to the Server (192.168.16.2) for DNS. We have manually re-configured DNS's on the clients to the DSL provider's DNS in an effort to resolve, but no change. When we run the Internet-E-Mail wizard, it shows a "Red X" for the Firewall (Is this because it is STANDARD and not PREMIUM). I am running out of ideas. I beleive this is either a DNS issue or a Firewall Issue. Again...the server runs great... it is just the clietns. Access to other network shares runs great. Any suggestions?     - How do I debug HTTP 500 errors? One of the vendors web sites we work with online has suddenly (in the last two weeks) stopped working. We get an HTTP 500 error instead of access to their site to upload files. I talked to their tech support and they won't give me the "top secret" ports they use. The kicker is our satellite office can submit files with no problem. They only have a Watchguard SOHO between them and the internet.     - SBS 2003 - RRAS Dial Up problem My first install of an SBS2003 server where they were still using dial-up today! The new HP Server replaced an existing Windows 2000 server and I had to use the original internal PCI Modem in the new server where it worked OK, for the record it's an Aztech 56k PCI Modem. SBS2003 correctly detects it, driver installed etc OK, configure a normal dial-up connection and it connects OK albeit at 32Kbps (remember how slow dial-up was!!) Anyway, run the wizard to connect, input the same credentials etc but it just won't connect, checking in RRAS and I can see it connecting but it never succeeds. Can anyone throw any light on why this would be short of driving over the modem in my car :( I gave up on it today but have to return tomorrow and see if I can pull a rabbit out of the hat so any ideas or suggestions appreciated.     - Folder Redirection Problem Hi all I have set the group policy to redirect all users My Documents folders to //servername/users/username and this has been working fine, making the My Documents folder available offline no problem. Now it has stopped working but only for any new users that I create. It redirects the folder to the correct place but it does not make it available offline and if I try and manually do it, it comes up with errors saying access denied. What has gone wrong???     - Upgrading to new Box. lots of questions I have read the paper on migrating from SBS 2000 to SBS 2003. But I do not have much of a time window to work with we operate here 6 to 7 days a week. I will need to do the migration on a Sunday ( not a big window of time) So my questions are. 1. Can I a hook the new box to two different switches one for the internal NIC and one for the external NIC and then load SBS2003. 2. Can I run the ADMT tool on the old server and export the data to a external drive and then import it to the new one? 3. After running the ADMT program can I still use the old server to run the network with until I am ready to put the new server on the network or will running the ADMT tool prevent me from using the old server still as the domain controller Tag: migrate users Tag: 158302

    - Sync Issues Hi, I have a user connecting their laptop to the LAN via VPN over dial up connection. They are using outlook 2002 and the companies exchange server is Exchange2000. They want to sync the calender etc. in order that when they are on the road they can take their laptop to meetings, update their calender and when they connect back to the network the calender will automatically sync. They would also like other work colleagues to be able to update their calender who are LAN side and have that data synched back the way when they connect via VPN if that makes sense. /*not sure it is without 3rd party SW) I had the user dial into the network today via VPN had them go into tools > Send/Receive Settings, and then click Define Send/Receive Groups then clicked the edit tab and selected all of the checkboxes. Then when prompted that would need an .OAB created clicked ok. This created the .OAB on their laptop. They then rebooted the PC. They can now see the Global address List which they couldn't see before but new items they insert into their calender etc don't seem to show when they log in on the LAN. I logged onto the network using their username and password after they had updated their calender but the updates didn't show. Anyone any ideas how i can achieve my aims?     - Problem with this size of 1 backup in SBS 2003. Any help? Hello The size of 1 backup is always 30GB because there are some mailboxes that have meany mails. (syncronisized). The extern Hard Disc who is used as the backup device, is a Maxtor wit capacity of 70GB. Now i see that SBS takes every night a Backup (just like i configured it). But he creates a new backup near the backup from yesterday. So after 2 days is the backup disc full.. Is there an option for to delete automaticaaly the older backup, before starting the new backup? in the wizard i don't found an option like that...
