Hello Group,

I have SBS2000 and the server has a modem installed. I'd like to provide
OUTBOUND fax services to a particular SBS user.

Any advice as to safety and advisability of enabling this service and is
there a "cook-book" on how to install the client side?

Server side is already setup..but not configured with the particulars...i.e.
SSID etc.

Thanks in advance

I've never heard of any security risk from the fax service. If you're
really worried about it, you could configure the modem not to answer
incoming calls.

How to configure the client depends on the workstation OS. For XP, just use
the add printer wizard to add the Microsoft Shared Fax on the SBS. For
prior OSs, add shared fax to the workstation from the SBS console. You will
have to configure everything on the server, but it shouldn't take long. I'd
recommend doing a few test faxes just to make sure you're happy with
everything.

Thanks Dave,

While I was waiting for a reply, I located KB 325807 which offers definitive
instructions for XP and W2K.

We have SBS2K and mostly W2K pro workstations. Thee particular desktop is
W2KPro SP4.

Thanks again

Dave,

I have progressed to the point of setting up the desktop for the MAPI
interface i Outlook2002.

Problem is I cannot seem to find the location of where I have to associate
the modem(device in shared fax service) and the desktop(maybe a printer????)

Help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

RickD

Rick - not sure I understand your question exactly. You configure the modem
on the server. Then in the fax mgmt on the server, you configure it to use
that modem to send faxes. Also on the server, you tell it what to do with
incoming faxes, etc. I'd recommend configuring everything on the server
first.

Then on the workstation, use the Add Printer wizard to add a network printer
called Fax or Microsoft Shared Fax. That will tell the workstation to use
shared fax with the settings you configured on the server. For example, to
fax a Word document, you would click File/Print and select Fax as the
printer. A wizard will start where you enter the fax number, cover sheet
info, etc.

The server may have two Fax printers set up - you'll want to figure out
which is the Microsoft Shared Fax, and un-share or delete the other one.
The one that's built into win2k server is not the Shared Fax that you want
to use with SBS. And, you probably don't want the Fax service running on
the workstation - it might interfere with Shared Fax.

Dave,

Thankyou for staying with me on this....

on the SBS2000 I have the following:

Microsoft shared fax(local)
devices and providers
devices
BCM V.92 56K Modem

when i right click on the modem and go to properties i see the following:

general
description
transmission settings
I have checked send faxes and used the TSID of T&W
I entered TW Shared Fax in the description

At this point I believe that I have completed the server based setup...

From the SBS console COMPUTERS I selected the CUSTSVC09 computer and chose
"add software to computer"

I rebooted the desktop and installed the Microsoft Shared Fax client
I now have the Microsoft Shared Fax Service Console in the Start/programs

This is so stupid of me... but for the life of me I cannot make the desktop
send a fax

What am I missing????

When I open MS Word and create a document and then select print...there is
no fax printer defined
when i go to add a printer...there is no fax device to select...

I know it is me ...but I really do not see this last step...
HELP!

Thanks

RickD

Do you have a shared printer called Fax or Microsoft Shared Fax on the SBS?
That's the printer you'd be adding to the workstation, using the Add Printer
wizard.

I'm on my way out of town, but you might be able to find more help at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=325807.
