Hi

i am running sbs 2000 with a dial up connection to the
internet.

Up until recently, my server would dial up and download
mail and on each workstation in microsoft outlook, mail
would be in the inbox. I could see it without having to
hit the send/receive button in ms outlook.

Now, my server will still dial up and download mail but
on each workstation in microsoft outlook, you have to hit
the send/receive button to get mail.

How can i change this back so that mail goes into the
mailbox automatically again without having to hit the
send/receive button in ms outlook?

I do not understand what has changed as i have not
changed anything.

any ideas anyone?

thanks

i want to add that mail is being delivered to a personal
folder in ms outlook on each workstation and not to the
mailbox.

Does this make a difference? Could this be why we have
to hit the send/receive button to see our mail come
through automatically without hitting the send/receive
button?

The personal folder is on the server.

We changed this so that mail would get backed up. At the
moment the server has got a zip 250 drive for backups.
It is not doing the job and we are looking at a backup
solution.

Have you already tried recreating the MAPI profile on the client and have
you already looked in the event log file? Is there a virus scanner on the
client workstations?

I would suggest you redirect mail delivery to the Exchange mailbox again
-this will make sure mails are being delivered on the Exchange 2000 store.
For your backup solution you can use NTBackup which includes the Exchange
Agent so that you can make online backups. If you are using third party
backup solution, then make sure you have the Exchange Agent as well.

I am not sure what backup problems you have whilst backing up the PST files
on the server but I guess they are skipped as well within the backup
program as they appear to be locked?

Yes, we are using trend micro officescan as the antivirus
solution for workstation and then trend micro scanmail
for exchange and server protect for the server.

I have not tried to create a new mapi profile on the
workstation. Will this help any?

I am using win98 on one client. No logs on that client.

The other is a winxp client. Will check logs tomorrow.

thanks again

I would certainly put the mail back into Exchange mailboxes as it is so
much better to manage then using PST files. PST files in versions earlier
then 2003 can only contain 2GB of data -you have to be aware of that too.
If the file size grow larger then that, unexpected results can happen which
can results in complete PST loss.

Furthermore, I would certainly set limits on the Information Store to make
sure it does not grow larger then a specified size. You may also need to
run an offline defragmentation tool on the Exchange Server database to have
it shrink again.

There is an article that describes how to determine free space availalbe in
Exchange databases. Before deciding to run a complete offline defrag, first
check how much free disk space you will get from the defrag:
186291 XADM: Cannot Determine Free Space Available in Exchange Database
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=186291

Best practice however is to speed up with getting your backup solution up
and running as this is what your business needs.
