Did you do .com.local of just .local?

Does not matter. If the last part behind the dot is something that does
exist on the Internet you are fine. You can use any word behind the dot as
long as it is not org, com or whatever.

The .local top level domain is very popular for Active Directory; however
clients running Mac OS X 10.2 or later have some issues with it because
Rendezvous, Apple's automatic network configuration protocol, uses .local as
well. If you don't have any Mac clients, its a non-issue; otherwise I'd
recommend choosing something else, such as .office, .lan or whatever strikes
your fancy.

See the "Apple Mac Client OS X" thread started on 7/16/03 in this newsgroup
for more discussion of this issue.
