One interesting note is that the files sizes will not shrink. The files
will always read the largest size it has gotten too. You can delete all the
mail files you want and the files will not shrink until you run a process
that is similar to a defrag on exchange.

With SBS20003 and Exchange SP2; that limit can now grow to 75GB.

I have increased the 16G limit to 17G according to this article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813051

after that I have deleted many emails and do the offline defrag

now priv1.edb+priv1.stm shrink to 7GB, which is well below the limit.

Shall I just removed that registry key now?

as I read this in the article

"Apply it only to systems that specifically require it."

Yes best to remove it. Any reason you're not upgrading to SBS 2003? With
Exchange 2003 SP1 the database limit is increased and SBS 2003 has so many
good features at a very reasonable upgrade price.

the limit has never been an "SBS" limit, it is a limit of Exchange Server
Standard Edition. ALL Exch server standard editions were similarly limited.

Exchange Server 2003 SP2 has expanded the database limit to 75GB.

I believe this is a bad idea. People should be encouraged to MANAGE their
email, not archiving but DELETING old mail, not using Exchange as a file
store but properly moving those files to either filespace or companyweb.

I also believe I'm as bad as the worst of your users. My mailbox is 2GB,
most of which I haven't referenced in 5 years and probably won't ever call
upon again, but it's there, and handy.

Do as I say, NOT as I do. :-)

Slightly off topic but:
Discovered the other day that Adobe Acrobat Prof V7 has an outlook feature
that allows a whole folder to be converted to a PDF document.
With a contents table that shows sorted by, date, subject, and sender. Makes
an ideal way to archive those very old e-mails off the exchange server but
still have them at hand and searchable.
I've been using it a lot to archive things. Much more flexible than .pst
files.

No not massive. I guess it depends how full you let your folders get.
But a very nice feature.
