We have a SBS 2003 server with 45 per server licenses. We also are trying to
configure a Windows NT 4 server to be a file server. But everytime users
logon script maps to the NT server, the event log records this error:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: LicenseService
Event Category: None
Event ID: 213
Date: 10/15/2004
Time: 8:12:56 AM
User: N/A
Computer: *the name of our NT server*
Description:
Replication of license information failed because the License Logging
Service on server \\*the name of our PDC* could not be contacted.

Hi Elang,

You do know that support for NT4 is running out?

Have a look here:

SBS 2003 does not use Per Server licensing, but User and Device Licenses
( CALs)
See:
Client Access Licensing for Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/howtobuy/CALs.mspx

SBServer 2003 comes with 5 CALs and you can buy Add packs of 5 or 20
CALs.
You'll need to purchase and Install an additional 40 CALs if you've not
done so.
( Note that the Member server also consumes a CAL )

On the NT4 Member Server select the "Per Seat" licensing Mode and enter
the number of SBS CALs you've installed on the SBServer.
As SBS does not support Mixed Mode the NT4 Box would have to be a Member
Server and not a BDC.

Yes, we have installed the 40 CALS on our SBServer 2003 box.

Can you explain your last paragraph further:
what steps do we take? where do we select per seat? I didn't think I
needed to install any licenses on the NT because it was supposed to just look
at the 2003 box to find out how many licenses were available/used. And where
do I need to specify the NT4 box is a member server?

Sorry Elang, I don't have an NT4 box connected up, and my memory isn't
that good to remember how to guide you through the settings, but I'm
sure if you look through your settings you'll work it out.

Just on a side note: You -do- realise that NT4 is well past it's use by
date, and all support for it ceases in less than 10 weeks time ?
