We have 3 companies that share a single domain, and we
have installed a new server with SBS in one of those
companies.after installing Windows Server (CD 1) the
server was joined to the domain, when we tried to
continue with the SBS installation an error occured and
the reason:you cant install SBS on a member server. we
disjoined the server from the domian and tried to
continue with the installation, but the wizard went
through the installing Active Directory step.
My question is: I need to install another 10 CALs on this
SBS server because it will run an SQL application and I
cant install the licenses without installing the SBS
management Console, however, I dont want to install
Active Directory as I want this server to be a memeber
server, is that possible?

One minor clarification - you can install additional DC's in to an SBS
environment. The restrictions on SBS for domains prohibit trusts and child
domains, but additional DC's are fine.

hmmm, sortta not correct.

SBS makes two demands. It must be 'first domain controller' (even though you
may install it after your first DC, as long as you make it the first DC
before letting the SBS CD's near it) and 'root of the forest' (ie. carry the
FSMO roles).

Microsoft, in their great wisdom, replaced PDC/BDC arrangements with a lot
of tomfoolery about 'equivalent DC's'. IMHO, it's hocus pocus. In large
networks (which I don't work on) there are advantages to distributing the
FSMO roles between servers but AD is not 'distributed evenly'. This is all
irrelevant in the current context, SBS is not allowed to host large domains
so any limitation on the distribution of the FSMO roles is not pertinent to
the discussion.

You can have multiple DC's in an SBS AD forest.
You can move an existing forest to a machine in order to install SBS and
either maintain multiple DC's or remove them.
