SBS2000, 2 nic
clients are xp and 2000

Have a Sharp Multi unit that when we installed worked with all clients. We
now have one client that we can not scan at the Sharp and send scan to
desktop software.

This client also had JAVA issues which I thought were related, but
installing JRE solved those. Still Sharp scanning no go... Upgraded it
from Win2000 to XP Pro with same results...

Have trouble shot with Sharp tech and have basically concluded that this
client is having ftp issues on port 21 (which is what it needs) that doesn't
allow it to communicate with the Sharp Unit that acts as an ftp server for
the LAN for scanning and sending image to clients desktop Sharp software.

On this client from cmd window c:>, ftp> open 192.168.16.11 21 enter.
Returns: > ftp: connect :Unknown error number

On all other clients (substituting their ip)
Returns: Connected to (IP).220 "client"."domain".local FTP server <Version
SharpDesk-0.5> ready.

The only thing that I can think of is that this is the only client that I
currently have set up for VPN. Whereby user establishes a VPN connection
from his home computer to the SBS server and initiates a TightVNC to control
his pc.

Sharp has basically said that there is nothing more they can do...

Any ideas on how to go about identifying what is happening with ftp on this
client on LAN?

You can scan to an email. That is what I have done with the Sharp
multi function.

When you upgraded did you format the hard drive? No legacy mess to
follow that kind of upgrade.

No I did not reformat, just upgraded. It is the bosses pc and it would take
forever to identify all the programs he uses and locate the installation
disks to start from scratch.

As I said it did work once. Can only think that installed TightVNC. Was
hoping to get some confirmation that it may affect ftp or at least some
direction on trouble shooting ftp.

I doubt that the VNC would affect ftp. It may take forever to
troubleshoot. I am no ftp expert so no help. I am fighting the ftp
option this morning. I hope the new device will do email which is real
easy to deal with scans. No knowing ftp really, what would happen if
you downloaded WSFTP and tried to ftp with that? If it works with
WSFTP then you may have some new clue as to what is going on.

VNC is not very intrusive at all, and doubt that that would cause your
problems.

I recently was installing a Ricoh copier/fax/sccanner, and was trying to
make it work via SMB (rather than using FTP). I was initially having
problems but finally we did make it work so that we could scan and store
documents directly to a shared folder on the SBS server. So, I never had to
try using FTP.

I believe Susan Bradley has a copier/scanner/fax machine, and is using FTP
to make it work.

What we have is a Sharp AR-M280N+ Digital Imager (copier) with a Duplex
Scanner (AR-EF1) using the Sharp Scanning Software (AR-NS2), a Fax Board
(AR-FX5), finisher and dual paper sources. Printing and faxing from this pc
work just fine. We are unable to install the scanning software on this pc
for some reason. It works great on everyone else's pc.

It is my understanding that the scanning software uses ftp to communicate
and distribute scanned images (pdf or tiff) from the scanner to the intended
user that is selected from the "local address book" on the Sharp unit
whereby it opens the "Sharpdesk 3.0" desktop software program on the
destination pc where you can file/move, print, fax, email, or convert by
OCR. For whatever reason, this pc will not install this software.

Each time the software is installed, would get an Error window, with "Unable
to install the application the class files could not be loaded.
Catastrophic failure." The Sharp tech attempted to upgrade to a newer
version of Sharpdesk and installed a patch that resulted in different, yet
similar results. Now the Error window just said "Catastrophic failure."

The Sharp tech is working within Sharp's "forum" where he said someone else
was having the same problem. No word back as what he has found out.

Basically the only thing I can identify is this issue with ftp as previously
stated. As you've indicated I really didn't think that the Tight VNC
software would have had anything to do with it....

Trying to remember how I set up the remote access for this user and if there
were some setting in SBS2000 where I would have not allowed ftp and that
might be causing the trouble.

Any ideas or direction as to where I can find assistance in trouble shooting
ftp would be greatly appreciated.

The older Sharps allowed scan to email. Is that a possibilty?

I suppose that it is, but what we're trying to achieve is direct scanning of
various client documents that can be archived...
