    - confused re Officescan port allocations!!?? Hello I am about to change from C/S/M (Enterprise?) to the SMB version - but having read the SMB notes I am even more confused re port allocations... Officescan clients use port 80 to communicate with the Officescan server on the SBS 2K server? (or did I use 1234?) and Officescan server uses port 8080 on the proxy server to get pattern file updates? We do not run any Internet available web pages on the server.     - Stop users installing keylog software A business colleague mentioned that they had discovered an employee at their firm installing keylogging software on a client PC, which numerous people logged on it. They now wanted to prevent any user from installing any program. I assume that the way to stop this is to reduce the User to a 'Restricted User' on each 2000/XP Client PC. I it takes Monday a backup at 1u, how long stays it on the backup device? does it replace it tuesday with the new one? or does it create it and leaves the older on it?     - email routing with POP3 connector in Exchange Hi I have Exchange 2000 and the exchange server dials into a POP3 mail account which is a "catch all" account (<anything>@domain.com). I have set a mail listing up for each user, e.g username@domain.com send to username exchange user. I have two questions on this topic? 1. What happens to email that has a alias that is not a username email address. e.g <anythingbutusername>@domain.com. Where is it stored? Does it get returned? 2. How do i get two different email alias's to route to the same exchange user? Do i set up a seperate "mail listing", in the exchange POP3 connector, and then assign that email address(mail listing) to the same exchange user? Or Do i place another email address in the users "properties" under the exchange tab? When the email is directed to the mail client i want the email to be able to be reconised seperatly.     - SBS 2003 ISDN connection I have had a problem trying to set an ISDN internet connection on SBS Server Standard edition. Internal ISDN TA works when set up as new connection and connected manually. When ICW is run this connection does not show in the chose connection drop down and if "new" connection is run the demand routing does not work.     - Print error alerts We are running SBS2K, and many printers are shared off this server. There is a packing slip printer in the warehouse that often goes offline, has a paper jam, or runs out of paper, and the warehouse staff never seem to notice in a reasonable amount of time. I want to set an alert, so that when the printer goes off line, or there is a paper error, the alert can net send a message to a particular PC, so a phone call can be made.. We managed to get the basics working, and set it so that when the counter is greater than 0, a message would be sent. The problem we have is with resetting the counter. Currently, the counter is set to 30 after a few errors, and every time it polls, it sends a message, even after the problem is fixed. We have had to stop the alert, but when we restart the alert, it sends more messages, as the counter is still 30. Can youone suggest anything? Thanks Bob Tag: SBS2003 issue Tag: 157051

    - Server Name We have recently installed an SBS 2003 server on a client site repalcing a windows 2000 svr The client has a lotus approach data base that has inbuilt links to approx 2000 lotus 123 spreadsheets, and all of these links are in the form of an absolute path i.e //server/common......et The new server has an entirely different name bassbs3k3 and therefore the approach databse will not work on the new server Is there any way we could create an alias for the server so that the links would still work?     - Server Status Report - Corrupt Layout I have been using the 'Server Status Report' for quite some time now on my SBS2000 box. Initially it worked fine, but after a while the layout became corrupt. More specifically, it appears as if the Carriage Return/Line Breaks are not being inserted at the end of each line. The other strange thing is that it only affects the report from a certain point down (halfway through the performance counters).     - Which distribution group scope should I use Having read a fair bit on distribution groups, I am still no wiser as to what scope to apply to my distribution groups in SBS 2000, which by definition is a single domain environment.     - Exchange doesn't distribute email after DOS attack SBS2000 Over the weekend my customer told me that they could not collect email, (using POP3). The server was also running low on drive C drive space so I assumed it was an issue with that. However visiting them yesterday & checking with their ISP (Demon) it seems that they had a email DOS attack. Demon support said that there were over 25,000 emails waiting to download & pointed out that we would never download that many emails by 56k modem. Demon then deleted all the DOS emails which were addressed to the postmaster. The postmaster account is not allocated to a user on the Exchange server, so I assume that it would just bounce them after processing the mail download. What appears to have been happening is that the POP3 collector would attempt to download the emails & each time, after several hours (or days) the POP3 collection would fail. As it was POP mail, all the mail would remain on Demon's mailservers & also Exchange would not process any of the mails that it had already downloaded as a complete POP collection had not occurred. This seems to have made exchange store some sort of temp download file on the Exchange drive & had eaten all the disk space. How do I free up the disk space caused by this? I cannot find any obvious place for this file. After Demon deleted the DOS emails, we ran a successful POP3 download which I was able to check using Demon's webmail facility (the mailbox had emails before I synch'd the email & afterwards it was empty). However although Exchange server has downloaded the new emails, it has not processed them & delivered to the clients. Could this be a problem with some huge temp file sitting somewhere?     - UPgrading from SBS V4 to SBS2003 Presently we use the IP address range on our SBS V4 of 89.2.2.--- this is because we also have a Unix server on the network which uses this address range. Will SBS2003 accept 89.2.2.2 as its IP address rather than the dafault? If not is there a solution other than changing the IP address of the Unix server.     - SBS2K Faxing Service I've got an SBS 2000 Server that can't keep its Fax Service running. The service has four dependencies attached to it, all of which are running happily. Whenever I manually start the service, it runs for all of a minute, then stops itself, with nothing written to the log. The modem is a USR external serial, with updated firmware.     - OfficeScan server not updating pattern files? Hello We had a problem recently when part of the OfficeScan software was deleted by mistake! I re-installed the software but it looks as if there is a config error as the server is not updating the pattern files. I have hourly schedule for this and the proxy server info is there. I think I'm correct in having port 8080 for this? Is there any way in which I can test that the proxy settings are OK?     - Terminal Services Client We have recently installed a new Server Running SBS 2000 and started using Terminal Services (from a Windows 2000 machine) and Remote Desktop (from 2 XP Pro Machines). It was working fine, until approximatetly the ending of the 90 day trial period. I have activated the Server's Terminal Server Licence and was told we need to buy the CAL's - which have been installed. I am able to get to the Network by VPN - but both TS and RD come up 'Busy' (originally it came up 'Timed out', restarted the Server and now it only comes up with Busy!). After re-speaking to Microsoft, they have confirmed we don't actually need the CAL licences (but thats a side issue) - any idea whats gone wrong, as, as far as I can tell, the only 'thing' that has occured is the expiring the the trial period (Server in question is a Dual Xeon 2.4, with 2Gb, which never goes above 710Mg in use and about 5% processor usage, so it isn't busy*) Thanks Paul * - While writing this message, Server has a 1Gb card - but is running though a 10/100 Switch, so a bottleneck could be occuring there....but it was working fine beforehand (so unlikely!).     - Outlook trying to retrieve data (periodically) OS is xp Pro Outlook 2003 Server is sbs 2000 With Exchange Setup is such. all work stations including server connected to router>router to ISP. Numerous times through out the day I lose connection with the exchange server. When it is trying to retrieve data I can still surf the internet, and access other computer through the newtwork including the hard drive on the server. After a period of time another popup screen is available allowing me to put in my password. After I enter the information in this field the exchange will work for several hours but then repeat the problem again. This is the only work station this is happening to.     - wrong amount of licenses in about All, Thanks in advance for any help. Installed SBS 2000 with 5 cal pack. Everything worked fine. However no one can log in. Looked in about to see how many license are in there it said -5 So got out a extra license disk, Comes up saying 15 licenses have been added. Check in about and it now says 10.     - SMTP Queue Keeps filling up Hi, Ive got a SBS2k Server with all the service packs on it, I have a problem with our SMTP server. We use SMTP to send via DNS instead of a smart host, but when I check the queue it is filled with thousands of messages from Mailer-Daemon@Zish.Kharkov.ua to which the subject is Virus intercepted. I'm constantly having to clean this queue throughout the day. Does anyone know of this as none of these e-mail are being sent out from the company.     - SMTPVS queue wont delete mail I have spent all day working on this and have so far got nowhere! The problem is that a user sent a 2.6MB file to over 260 recipients. The Exchange server seems to have freaked out because I dont believe a single one has been delivered and the failed emails are sending NDR's to the sender over and over again. The expiration timeout period of the Default SMTP Virtual Server is set to 4 hours. This email was sent about 30 hours ago and is still sending NDR's. I have attempted to delete the mail from the queue. If a queue lists 1 or more mail items for that domain, selecting freeze or delete turns it to 0. Most queued items are already set at 0. I have deleted the items in the \VS 1\queue folder but the items regenerate again! I have set all timeout periods to 1 minute and after 1 minute the items in the VS 1\Queue folder are removed but are still listed in the SMTPVS and still runs the Internet connection flat out and sends NDR's. A reboot will regenerate the VS 1\Queue folder just as it had originally, and again will slowly delete all items again. This has got me stumped. It seems nothing will remove the items from the queue, and the server is still tryint to send tomething even though it has expired and is not listed in the VS 1\Queue folder.     - Imminent upgrade to SBS2003 & new hardware Hello people, We are moving to a new building, and I thought I would take the opportunity to upgrade from SBS2000 to 2003. The boss has also volunteered to buy us a new machine for the server. I think it is going to be a similar spec, but with IDE instead of SCSI drives (more space, possibly not as fast). I am looking for some advice about how best to set-up and configure the new network, and how best to make use of the old server. I already have a copy of SBS 2003 which came with this year's Action Pack subscription (I have two copies of SBS 2000, one which we bought with the original server, and one from last year's Action Pack). However, I believe it is not possible to have two SBS machines connected on the same network. Is this correct? Obviously it would be useful to have both machines connected together to transfer data across (although I do have a couple of removable USB drives that I could use for this if necessary). Currently I have an old 486 machine that I am using as a web server (running Apache on Win98 with Web Forwarding from the SBS machine). This is very slow, but does the job (our main website is hosted externally at the ISP). My thought is to throw this away and perhaps use the old server for this instead. When I originallay set this up I was advised by people in this group that having a web server sitting in the SBS network was not a good idea from a security point of view, and instead I should have set it up in it's own 'DMZ'. I decided to take the risk and don't seem to have had any problems. Would the same considerations apply with SBS 2003? If I decide to use the old SBS box for the web server, it would seem a bit of a waste to have it sitting there just doing this one job. I would prefer to have it on the network and available for other things, possibly hosting a database. Might it be a good idea to have exchange running on this machine instead of the new server? Anyway, this will hopefully all be happening in a couple of weeks time (as soon as the boss signs the lease on the new building). This will only be my second SBS installation, and my first attempt at copying stuff across from one to another so any advance warning of any likely problems would be greatly appreciated.     - Win 98 and Internet connectivity issue I have a Windows 98 workstation that cannot get internet access unless the SBS2K server is already dialled up (ISDN). If the dial up connection is disconnected then the browser reports server cannot be found. As soon as the dial up is activated then the PC connects to the internet. Other PC's work fine. Any ideas?     - POP3 not working Hi All: we are running premium edition of SBS 2003. I cannot recive email from remote location. However I can ping the fqdn server name and I can ping ip address. When I click "Test Account Setting" in Out look 2003 I receive message under error tab "The specified server was found but there was not response from the server. Please verify the port and SSl information is correct. We do have ISA Server 2000 running. Is it possible that port 110 is closed by default and if so how do I open it. Please guide.     - Veritas Backup Exec. 99% complete. Failed A quick question, A user today shut the server down during a power outage. She forgot to acknowledge "please eject media" message in Backup Exec. The job was at 99% complete. The amount of data looks correct, though. Is the data ok on the tape? I can try a restore and have not done yet on this tape. The ominous "failed" message is troublesome.     - SBS2000 - Pop3 connector installation issue HI All, I have recently added exchange to my SBS2000 installation using the "typical" installation. Did the forest prep and then domain prep for the AD. I can't seem to find teh POP3 connector. I thought POP3 connector installed by default in SBS? Where have I gone wrong??     - Exchange 2000 Transport Event Sinks I have been trying to install a transport event sink in Exchange 2000 that will allow me to strip off attachements before they are processed through my office. I have followed the directions in the knowledge article and it doesnt work, even though the event sinks registers properly and I restart my Virtual SMTP server. Is this possible for SBS2000?     - User account Hope someone can help me. I found an article on how to go into a user's properties and under permissions deny the user permission to get to their mailbox. I did not want to disable to account. However, when I went in and disabled full control for the "self" the user's account is inaccessible within AD users and computers. It has a windows icon next to it and If I go to the properties it tells me that the information cannot be displayed. This Domain admin had permission on this account and I did not change any permission there, just the Self.     - Moving SBS 2000 to a different machine. I have a SBS 2000 (with 15 CALs) running on a machine that is runnning out of HD space. We plan to move it a different machine with bigger HD. Is this possible? Are there any gotchas that I should be aware of? I heard that CALs would look for the old NICs (from the original machine).     - Exchange licenses exceeding users I noticed a disturbing thing yesterday, When looking at my exchange 2003 server I noticed it was throwing up warnings about license usage exceeding license limits. I am using per server licenses and when I go into licensing uder admin tools I actually have 12 more CALS being used than I have users. And my current users are randomly being kicked off of the server. I then looked uder the exchange system manager and I have the correct number of mailboxes for the users, though I have 3 NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM mailboxes (SMTP, System Attendant and SystemMailbox) that I assume are some default creations.     - reaching the 50 user barrier on SBS 2000 We currently are running SBS 2000. Ourt business has grown substantially over the past year and we are approaching the 50 user limit on SBS. Because of this, we are looking at upgrading to SBS 2003 (75 users) OR full blown win 2003 server with Exchagne SQL server ISA etc... (very very pricy!!!) This morning as a test, I added 10 more 'test' users - which would put us beyond the 50 user limit just to see what would happen. I created Exchange mailboxes for each. I expected SBS to prevent me from adding the 51st user, but was pleasantly surprised when this was not the case. Where is the limit? Does it prevent 51 concurrent users only - meaning I could have 100 users in the AD but as long as only 50 are logged on at once I'm ok? If this is the case, then we are ok because we will not have all 50 users on at once. Please let me know where the SBS limitations are. Maybe we do not have to upgrade to 2003 SBS just yet...     - ISA stops requests to Extrnal Company Website (i think) We have SBS2000 with ISA in inegrated mode, since enabling two nic setup we are unable to Access our externally hosted website from the private/internal network [it has the same domain name!] The internal domain 'company.net' is the same as the web site 'www.company.net' The forward lookup A' record is there with the external IP addres but we get a User log on screen when attempting to acccess the external network.     - Changing DNS name of SERVER Our ISP has changed some settings at their end meaning that the name of our server is no longer treated as 'secure'. Unfortunately they forgot to tell their customers this! We need to therefore change the name. Under system properties, network indentification tab, it says that the ID of our computer cannot be changed because it is a domain controller. Also under Active Directory Users and Computers, Domain Controllers snap-in (help)it says that only a member of Domains Admin Group is allowed to make this change. I thought I had set one user up as such.. but then again!     - Obscure license issue question I have a question that I hope someone might be able to help me with. A customer of mine has an SBS machine in his head office. This machine connects to the internet via a broadband router, and participates in SQL server replication from other machines that are installed in the customers other offices around the country. In a downstairs office of the same building, the customer runs another business. He wants to install another SBS machine, which will then replicate SQL server data out to another location, again via the Internet. My question is: can we do this using the same broadband router that the 'upstairs' machine uses? This would require that the two SBS machines are on the same IP network, but they would be configured to have different domains. In actual fact, once the data has been replicated out to another system via the internet, that system in turn will replicate back into the upstairs system. This is because data is collated in groups of offices, and each group is then passed back to the head office system, 'upstairs' in this scenario. My headache is whether I would be breaking the SBS licensing rules by having these machines physically connected. It appears that I can assign two different addresses to the LAN side of the broadband router, so I could have the two on separate IP networks (as long as we can figure out SQL replication using non-standard port numbers) but would this be enough to satisfy licensing? The last option is a second broadband connection and another router, but the customer is keen to avoid the running cost of another line. Your thoughts would be most appreciated. Mike. Hi,

ive just built a SBS 2003 server. I gave the local admin
account a password during build and logged in using this
just fine during further setup steps. After completion of
setup and first time it logs into domain, i cant login. I
realise i cant tell it to log in locally as its a DC so
what account do i use. I wasnt prompted to create one and
the local admin account doesnt work. What am i missing?
