If you have deleted items retention time configured, you will be able to
recover deleted items from mailboxes for the amount of days you've set. In
Exchange System Manager, Servers, Servername, First Storage, rightclick on
Mailbox Store and Public Folder Store, choose Properties. On one of those
tabs you can set the amount of days that items should be kept after deleting
and also the amount of days that a deleted mailbox should be kept. (Haven't
got a SBS 2000 in front of me right now, but on SBS 2K3 the tab is called
Limits.)
A lot of people will advise never to use Bricklevel Backup, because of some
problems that it can cause. Whenever you would encounter problems, the first
thing they ask is if you do BLB backups and then tell you to stop that.
BLB backups enable you to recover parts of a mailbox or the whole mailbox.
But if you use the retention time thingie, you in fact don't need to do BLB
backups. Be honest, how many times did you have to recover a mailbox?
I sometimes get a call of a client who tells me that they deleted an email
by accident and if I can recover that for them. I just tell them to go to
the Deleted Items in Outlook, Menu Tools, Recover deleted Items and that
client is very happy again.
Why BLB will work for some time and then just stops working properly, I
don't know. But I do know that trying to figure out why and trying to get it
to work again, is really not worth the effort (and believe me, I have tried
it). Especially, because there is no need to.
