What is happening is periodically the internet will go down.

The setup is a dual nic to a router as per Merv's excellent
instructions.

When we make some investigations here is what we find.

1. we can ping the external NIC. (192.168.16.2)
2. We cant ping the router (192.168.16.1)
3. We reboot the router and we have the same problem.
4. we Reboot the server and we can then ping the router and the
internet starts to work. I am assuming that this is due to the fact
the server can ping the router after a reboot.

Any suggestions would appreciated.

TIA

IMHO I would try changing the nic. Install a loopback adapter [a bogus
nic] assign it the ip address of your internal IP, install a new card
and then assign the new nic the original IP address.

Are you saying it might be the internal NIC or the external nic. I
would have thought it would point to the external nic as the rest of
the network is working fine on the internal NIC
