install printer on 98 os based workstation

Today I want to add a network printer to a 98 os workstaion in SBS 2000
domain. The printer i choose to connect to is a device to another workstation
running 2000 pro who worked as a printer server in SBS 2000 domain. I did the
same thing for a 2000 pro workstation, it was done smoothly, but when i try
to do this for a 98 os workstation, it prompted me insert a 98 2nd os CD. I
do not have the 98 os CD at hand. I guess the problem is that 98 os need a
appropriate printer driver. Can anyone help. Thanks

Sounds Right, You're going to need a printer Driver that will be
compatible with Win98.

The printer manufacturer may or may not provide such a driver ( not to
may are writing drivers for 6 year old software. )

Hi John

Try downloading a driver for Win98, install it on the 98 pc as LPT this will
then put the drivers into win98. Install the network one, once done delete
the LPT one you installed originally.

Hopefully there are not any core W98 files missing (can't think of any) and
it should work.

Sorry John been away for a while.

1. Download Windows 98 driver for printer. You only want the driver not any
fancy other additions. The fancy programs are usually an .exe to configure
printer for you.
2. Extract / unzip the files to the pc. (files are compressed and you need
to extract the files. This will then give you a location where the drivers
can be installed from.
3. Start the process to install a printer. You want to install from the '
have disk ' option . When you install a printer you have the list of
printers to chose from and at the bottom is the have disk button. Find that
folder that you put the files in, in step 2. This will now install the
printer and put the printer driver into windows driver database.
4. Now you should be able to install the network printer.

Another way of course is adding the 98 drivers to the pc where it is
installed that you are connecting to. In properties , drivers you should be
able to add the drivers if it has been setup as a network printer. Of course
you would need to do steps 1 and 2 on the pc / server that has the printer
installed.
