Our company has decided to use Exchange server instead of
an ISP for our email. They have purchased a new server
and SBS2k. I have created a new domain and AD and DNS are
working. Now here's the two questions:

1. What's next? Install and setup Exchange or migrate
users/resources from existing "other" domain?

2. Where can I find resources for installing Exchange on
SBS2k? Best Practices? etc... As for that matter - the
whole process of setting up a SBS2k server along with
Exchange?

Thanks,

dh

If you really want to do it the SBS-way and you can spare reinstalling... my
suggestion is that you format and start over again. The SBS integrated setup
will take care of AD/DNS/Exchange... and pretty much everything. If you had
to setup AD (DCPromo) and DNS manually that's a clear indication that you
are not following the SBS setup (and you might encounter trouble in the
future).

Again, it is not totally necessary to format and reinstall... but I believe
that in the long run it would be better for you.

Just so you get the big picture, this is an outline of the procedure:
-Reformat the server
-Install the Windows 2000 Server part
-When you finish the OS installation run setup again from the SBS disk and
the integrated setup will start.
-Select which components you want (i.e. Exchange, ISA and/or SQL)
-Name your domain whatever.local (don't use the .com/net/org/tld address for
AD)
-Finish the integrated setup and then make sure you have the latest service
packs/patches applied.
-Open the Administrator Console and look for the To Do list.
-Run the internet connection wizard (that will setup Exchange and ISA)

If you want to really learn... repeat the process. I probably reinstalled
SBS2k at least 3 times before I actually installed it in a production
enviroment. I'm not going to tell you how many times I have installed SBS2k3
(which BTW you might want to consider if this is a new installation).

Exchange should have been installed as part of the SBS installation - are
you sure it's not already there (check in Services)? If it's not installed,
start SBS setup from control panel/add and remove. You'll need to see what
else may not be installed that is necessary for Exchange - IIS in
particular.

After you've installed Exchange (or verified that it's already installed),
I'd go to the MS Exchange site to make sure you're fully patched.
http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/downloads/2000/default.asp

A substantial part of the Exchange setup will be done for you when you run
the ICW. Clicking on Exchange in the SBS console will bring up links to the
online documentation. Also, there's the SBS 2000 support site at
http://www.microsoft.com/sbserver/support/. And of course you can post your
specific questions here.

Thanks for the help. I believe I have it. Now I need to
understand how to communicate with the outside world.
I'll post that question under another topic.

Both of you really helped. Thanks.
