I am trying to setup something for my clients to manage their server and
workstations for updates. The lite version of HFNetChk allows up to 50
computers which is perfect for the SBS network. I know it is recommended to
install on a workstation to push the updates as this is what I do on my own
network. But can it be installed on the SBS and accessed with Terminal
services? I am thinking of installing it on the servers and access it
remotely to administer updates. I know that I can probably take control of a
workstation also but I didn't want to disrupt someone that might be working
on their workstation.
Any thoughts? Pros or Cons?

As always... have a good backup....

Does it work fine on your server?

At home it works just fine. Did a better job than Windows Update :-)

Rick,

You may be a bit confused ... it sounds like you think that in order to push
updates out to all workstations you need to have HfnetchkLT installed on the
server. That is not true.

I have HfnetchkLT installed on a workstation, and from that workstation I
can easily push out updates to all or selected workstations, or even the
server with no problems. Also, you do NOT need to install HfnetchkLT on
every workstation - just one.

I know that for me, it would be helpful to have it installed on my customers
servers, so that I could log on remotely and check/patch workstations.

Any reason it SHOULDN'T be in stalled on the server?

I am not confused. I know exactly how it works. I want to install it on the
server so I can terminal into it, then push updates to all the workstations
on the LAN. But the recommendation is to install it on ONE workstation not a
server. So I am asking if it works ok on the Small Business Server instead?

I understand that concept also but I mentioned that I prefer not to do that,
if possible.

Are you saying that it might be a problem installing it on the server?

I haven't tried. I actually don't expect so, for the current version. I
wouldn't allow it to update itself until I had tested it on our test box
though, I've had some wierd stuff happen when HF updates but mind you,
nothing which has broken the system it was running on, just sometimes
necessary to remove, delete directory, re-install.

I think that, come payday, I'm finally going to get those drives I've been
promising Susan I'll give the Lounge Area Server. When I do the first two
tasks are SUS (I still ain't comfortable with that name) and hf on the
server. Meanwhile hf runs on W2K TS, a luxury necessity allows me.

Gavin,

Susan indicated that she has installed it on her server at home. I prefer to
not install *any* end user applications on a server - period. That's my
reason.

I can easily connect to an admin workstation connected to the server, and
run HfNetCHKLT just as easy from the workstation as I could from the server.
Furthermore, if I screw up, the server is not affected.

Rick,

My response to you was based on your statement "I know that I can probably
take control of a workstation also but I didn't want to disrupt someone that
might be working on their workstation." --- which I interpreted as you
thinking that you would have to connect to each and every workstation and
run HfNetChk locally on each, thus requiring you to have to kick people off
their PC's. I was simply pointing out that you can install HfNetChkLT on a
single workstation and push patches out to all workstations.

I apologize if I misunderstood your statement.

Personally, I choose to NOT install any third party apps on my servers. I
do not even have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on most of them! My only
exception is TightVNC.

Of course I run antivrus server software, and backup tape software on the
server -- that is, software designed to run on the server, for the server.

When I said no 3rd party apps, I was referring to end user applications ---
that is, software that can and should be run from a workstation. I don't
install Office on the servers, nor Outlook. And although Internet Explorer
is installed on SBS servers, I make it a point to not even use it unless
there is a legit reason or emergency.
