One word of caution. Shavlik is currently of the position that HFNetChkLT
does not support deploying patches to the Small Business Server. If you
have any problems, they will not assist.

This is based on personal experience and you can find my posts in their
newsgroup.

Great !! Thanks for the link.

What I want to throw out is, just what are we going to do? How do we end
users, VAP's VAR,s deal with hacks/spam?

How do we walk into a client and say, you can work normally? Type letters,
do spreadsheets, read email, work from home/afar and you data be safe?

Spam ... two choices.... blacklists or whitelists ..... Blacklists Vamsoft is
very good [~great even]

While lists matador or ChoiceMail where you build a white list of those people
you DO want email from and then do a challenge response from the rest.

Hacks.... that's IMHO easy. [Easier than the spam anyway].... Keep 80 closed,
make usernames/passwords alphanumeric, longer than 8 characters and change
them...minimum of 90 days... probably 42 days is best. Most of the time the
hacks are automated systems that got infected and are pinging out...so keep A/V
up to date, strip off those attachments that are the "nasty list" ...which in
my office includes .zip files these days..... keep up to date on patching.....
and we SBSers are honestly... many times better off than the large firms [no
worse at any rate....]

Poppycock. Granted the think isn't 100% consistent but then again MBSA and WU
isn't either.

I've been pushing patches to an SBS 2000 Gold machine today.

(During the scan, it will report 'Small Business Server SP1'. The SP
reference is the SP of the actual OS, not the SP specific to the collection
known as SBS. I understand that SBS SP1 is really Windows 2000 Server SP3 -
so this will scan and reports as Small Business Server SP3.)

Patch icons will now appear next to the SBS product entries and can now be
deployed (updated patchdetails4.xml file released earlier today.) OS
related patches will not apply unless the Exchange Service is stopped.
We've written code to enable you to stop Exchange server during a deployment
(and restart everything that we stopped) - this code will be available in a
future version. Other patches, such as MDAC and WMP can be deployed without
stopping the Exchange service.

The ISA Server appears in my scan results - not sure what Mr Maunder was
experiencing, but we can review log files to see (please send them to me).

When you post...ping Eric as well.
And email the log files to me.

Quite honestly the whole patching thing is still a mess. I still use a
combination of WU and Shavlik to do what I need to do. Don't trust either one
of them as they still AFAIK look to different XML files.

For good measure run the MBSA as well....two of the three should match...there
might be one of the three that doesn't. When all three match.... there's
normally a full moon or something like that ;-)

Based on the latest posts in the Shavlik NG, this is what I would like to
do:

1. I need to deploy 03-026 and a few others tonight. I will see if the
updated XML file helps the situation in general.
2. Report back with a hopeful resolution to my problem or contact you via
e-mail to enlist your very kind assistance.

Susan,

I'm pleased to report that using HFNetChk Lt V4.0.76.4 that I finally was
able to deploy patches to one of the SBS servers that have not cooperated up
until now!

Thanks for your offer of assistance and for pointing out the new post from
Eric in response to my post. Since it had a different subject I overlooked
it.

Regards,
Dave Benet
