I am tryign to get Small Business Sever 4.0 to install
over a new PowerEdge 2600 by installing Window NT Server
4.0 first, with all drivers in place.

My first attempt, with a 4.0 GB initial partiion (NTFS)
and all drivers in place (RAID, SCSI, NIC) failed on teh
first reboot when SBS Install/Upgrade ran. I got a BSOD
for invalid boot device.

The first partiion was les than 4 GB and boots with no
problem to install NT 4.0.

Any suggestions on how I can get around teh specific
hareware limitations of SBS 4/0/4.5 to get in installed on
this machine?

Don't load SBS 4.0/4.5. Upgrade - Really. You'll be so glad you did.

Version Upgrade (from SBS versions 4.0, 4.5 or 2000 to Windows Small
Business Server 2003 Premium Edition)
SKU: T75-00037
Price: $599.00 (US)

Chad, I owe you a beer, 'cause you are a good guy, even
those I didn't get my solution from you.

I finally dredged up F6 out of my memory to get OEM
drivers into the install. But it's been a while since I
did an SBS, since NWC days, in fact. (I'm assuming you're
possibly the same Chad Gross I used to work with. I may be
wrong).

Main reason my wife's public agency is moving hardawre is
lack of bucks before new year and dying existing hardware.
They are looking into non-profie/educational licensing,
which will cost them very little.

Even if you're not the Chad Gros I think you are, I
appreciate your jumping into the conversation to help out.

Hey Mark -

I'm pretty sure that I'm not the person you're thinking of - but I'll take
you up on the drink nonetheless . . . j/k ;^)

If you wife's agency is a 501(c) non-profit, then they can get some
*awesome* licensing deals. Check out the link Susan posted. And if that
doesn't work for you, don't be shy. Although we may have to ping Cris or
someone else more familiar with SBS 4.0/4.5 :^)

Mark:

As Susan and Chad said, if you qualify for the software at Techsoup, you can
get SBS 2000 W/SA and 50 CALs w/SA for about $60. I bought this for a
non-profit in my area about 4 months ago. You *should* then be able to get
the upgrade media for SBS 2003 Premium for another $30 or so (haven't tried
this yet).

Also, for hardware maybe see:

TechMarketPlace (part of the Tech Foundation website) - haven't tried these

NT4 is not as fussy as Win2000. I would have tried to load the drivers
for the new servers video and hard drive system on the old sytem. I
would have used Norton's Ghost to image the old server drive to a
spare ide hard drive or a usb drive. I would then copy that drive to
the new server. Or I have loaded the OS on the new server with the
mentioned F6 option, loaded my backup software and restored from tape.
Note that if you restore from tape without have the correct video and
hard drive controller drivers the reboot may fail.

Techsoup as mentioned saves many of my nonprofits. I just ask that
they use their crystal ball as orders are only once every two years.
